You mention that your place have no Unifi.
So you are stuck with StreamyX 4/8mbps or Maxis.

My advise, stay away from Maxis for the following reason:
1 - If your area Maxis uses TM infra to provide service, everytime there is a problem it will take 2 times longer to fix because they have to escalate to TM and wait TM engineer troubleshoot.
2 - Their international speed (outside malaysia) very bad.
3 - Not possible to get full speed download without using a download manager
4 - TechniColor and Thompson router is a piece of crap
5 - Possible to change router (I have done it) but when ever have problem, they will blame your router
6 - Their 1st level support knows shit about troubleshooting, they only read from manual and doesn't understand technical terms.
7 - They advertise only download speed not upload speed, I have 32mb line. Upload is 15mb only. This is normal they say.
8 - They only provide private IP unless you request and can justify.

I have Unifi Home, UnifiBiz & Maxis Fiber Biz 32mb.
Both my Unifi lines are extremely stable (I use my own router).
I am trying to switch my Maxis to Unifi but currently tied down to a contract.

All other services Maxis provide (SHDSL, Mobile data, Telephony) I have no complains. They just should have not ventured into Fiber is they are not willing to invest in the infrastructure but want to rent from a company who provides the same service. Rumor has it TM always plays with Maxis lines so that users will switch to TM after having so many issues.

I speak based on experience, you might or might not have had the same experience. No prejudice intended.

wow..now you have mention so many problem with maxis i oso started to have doubt. But i have already applied for it and my alarm system is designed to connect/works only to the technicolor router which i find it ridiculous.

Its a bad move i made for the alarm system.

I have a few questions to port forwarding and Public IP, it might have been asked before and I already searched the whole topic but still could not find any answer.

1) I recently changed to public IP and my account now has @public.maxis.com.my but how do I know if its public IP. My IP address begins with 121 instead of 14 which I read was public IP.

2) I'm not sure about this but port 80 was opened after changing to public IP, or just a mistake by me. But I'm trying to open port 3074, I tried port forwarding on the router itself and assign Public IP to my computer but it still could not work.

Any suggestions/solutions to my problems? rclxub.gif

121 is public ip. Goto to http://www.whatismyip.com/ if its show same ip as in router than its public.

U don't put public ip to ur computer. U just need to port forward what port u want in the router and point the port to u computer internal ip. Usually 192.168.1.xxx

Anyone had their VOIP placed out of service due to non usage?

I have that problem but doesn't really affect me as I don't use it.

Just curious as to whether other users experience the same thing.

agree with you!
even the router keeps on rebooting every 48hrs..hence, to play online games need to evade the "48th hour" to avoid losing or loss of data.

router rebooting every 48 hours? No lah, it's the BRAS renewing the session every 48 hours. Later people misled, thinking buy different router will solve problem when it's the backend that behaves this way. Even more frustration...

What is BRAS? It is infact a forced IP change by Maxis, it will do it every 48 hours on the dot. So what I did, I'm using my own router and have a cron entry to drop my WAN connection at 3am every other day. This won't interrupt my works during the day and it is much quicker than the forced IP change which took almost a minute to get a new IP.

Broadband Remote Access server. The server which interfaces betwen you and other network elements for the authentication and session allocation.

Yes, you're right. It disconnects 48 hours from the successful PPP login. So, disconnecting and reconnecting back manually within the 48 hour window is a good way to reset the session timer at your own control. Need a router that's capable of that though... openwrt allows that I guess with some scripting function.

Ah, alright .. too many abbreviations smile.gif

I'm using OpenWRT and I've this entry in my schedule tasks/crontab:

0 3 */2 * * /sbin/ifup wan

This will bring down the wan connection at 3am in the morning and happens the other day (48hrs). It does the reconnection within few seconds, much faster than waiting for the BRAS to do the IP change.
