Not sure if I should speak out....*gulp*

Maxis does not throttle users, esp those doing P2P torrents and other heavy downloads. They are facing issues some issues though with their network due to sabotage cases around PJ area. I know one of their main links near Kota Damansara was down for more than 48 hours early this week due with fibre cables being cut.

Capping will not come anytime soon, for both TM and also Maxis Home. Same goes to TIME. Rest assured, if one of the telco players activates that, the others will follow closely.

this morning after my router restarted itself unexpectedly, internet was slow, speedtest.maxis.com.my reported 500kbps download and 9mbps upload. after calling maxis, they reset my session at their end and I restarted my devices, both download and upload at 9mbps (my normal speed).

At first it was 1mbps. Then reduced now to 500kbps. What you're referring to is 50kBps.

B = bytes
b= bit

so 500kbps = 500/8 = 62.5kBps

that is the maximum speed you will get when torrenting between 8PM to 2AM

I think it really down to the area you are and how much users there are doing P2P. Im not saying Maxis is not throttling but not that bad. I'm getting better speed for P2P than say, sites like Hotfiles where you really are throttled to say, 70kB/s.

I don't know about others, but I've been torrentting on weekly basis between 8pm to 2am (on Saturday and Sunday, as that's when the drama I watch got uploaded / subbed).

Depending on the seed (as the torrent is freshly uploaded), the speed usually ranges from 60KB/s to 450KB/s (usually 60KB/s to 150KB/s for the first 1 hour, after updating the tracker again the speed rises).

It's safer to say that speed will be throttled, then if it's not, customer will be happy about it.

Maxis & TM guys came to my house to install even though I've cancelled my appointment. Postponed to May.

So I took the opportunity to ask them the installation cost.

The Maxis guy told me it would be minimum RM450 while the TM guy who came an hour later quoted me RM700.

I live in a semi-d, going to put the modem upstairs in the upper living room by the window. And the green box is 10m from my house.

1) Is this correct?

2) Is it at least RM450?

3) is there any cheaper alternative?

4) Should I put the modem/router downstairs instead if it will save me $$$?

5) If the modem is downstairs, I will most probably have a weak signal upstairs where I do my work at the desk most of the day.

I am currently using RM88 4mb Streamyx. Satisfied user.
The Maxis Home that I subscribed to is RM118/10mb.

It is recommended to place the modem/router at the main TV cabinet coz more and more TV contents are streaming from the internet. LAN connection is a must for whatever TV box, Media box or Astro IPTV streaming and you don't want to use WIFI to steam TV contents.
As for surfing and work at various spots in a big house, weak wifi signal can be easily solved by adding repeater or home plug.

Thanks

But I read here that the signal is weak.
Since my house is pretty big with many corners, I reckon I would need more than 1 home plug.

Cause as of now, my streamyx modem is at the desk in the upper living room and I can only get 1 bar in the living room downstairs where the tv is.
So if I put the Maxis router there, I would get 1 bar at my desk upstairs where I spent most of the time during the day.

And I doubt the bedrooms upstairs can get a signal without the homeplug.

The homeplug needs to be set where I can get 2 bars of is 1 enough?
