Maxis & TM guys came to my house to install even though I've cancelled my appointment. Postponed to May.

So I took the opportunity to ask them the installation cost.

The Maxis guy told me it would be minimum RM450 while the TM guy who came an hour later quoted me RM700.

I live in a semi-d, going to put the modem upstairs in the upper living room by the window. And the green box is 10m from my house.

1) Is this correct?

2) Is it at least RM450?

3) is there any cheaper alternative?

4) Should I put the modem/router downstairs instead if it will save me $$$?

5) If the modem is downstairs, I will most probably have a weak signal upstairs where I do my work at the desk most of the day.

I am currently using RM88 4mb Streamyx. Satisfied user.
The Maxis Home that I subscribed to is RM118/10mb.

use homeplug.. settle

Thanks

But I read here that the signal is weak.
Since my house is pretty big with many corners, I reckon I would need more than 1 home plug.

Cause as of now, my streamyx modem is at the desk in the upper living room and I can only get 1 bar in the living room downstairs where the tv is.
So if I put the Maxis router there, I would get 1 bar at my desk upstairs where I spent most of the time during the day.

And I doubt the bedrooms upstairs can get a signal without the homeplug.

The homeplug needs to be set where I can get 2 bars of is 1 enough?

Dunno about your case, but mine install in the upstairs living room, middle of living room, RM170, over the ceiling.

RM170 is not bad at all.
RM750 is crazy. I wouldn't want to spend that much just for internet.

What were the charges for actually?
I understand from Maxis that we can get our own technician but I don't even know what kind of cables or methods they use so I don't know how to explain to my technician.
Do you know?

It is recommended to place the modem/router at the main TV cabinet coz more and more TV contents are streaming from the internet. LAN connection is a must for whatever TV box, Media box or Astro IPTV streaming and you don't want to use WIFI to steam TV contents.
As for surfing and work at various spots in a big house, weak wifi signal can be easily solved by adding repeater or home plug.

Thanks aeiou!

I read here that the wifi signal is weak.
Since my house is pretty big with many corners, I reckon I would need more than 1 home plug/repeater in order to reach up stairs and all the rooms.

Now with my streamyx modem is at the desk in the upper living room, I can only get 1 bar in the living room downstairs where the tv is, where you suggest me to put the router.
So if I put the Maxis router there, I would get 1 bar at my desk upstairs.
I spend most of my time at the desk for work.

It will cost me another few hundred bucks. Add to the RM750 quotation, I would be spending over 1k.
Even without the repeaters and home plug, at RM750, I can't believe it's so expensive to install internet.
It was totally free with TM. sigh.

Thanks. I think I would need more than 1 in order to reach all the rooms or downstairs.

The TM modem and Maxis router is connected by LAN cable. You can place the TM modem at any spot in your house to reduce the distance charged by installer to the minimum. Then connect the modem and router with Home plug or a long LAN cable.

Where you want to place the router is up to u. You know your house best. My advice is put it at the main TV cabinet. Weak wifi signals can be easily solved by cheap repeater or High gain client AP.

Thanks once again AEIOU.

An Aztech wifi extender costs RM129.
Since most of the time we will be using wi-fi upstairs in the rooms, I reckon I would need at least 2 wifi extenders so that will cost RM260. Let's say in order to get better coverage upstairs, I use 3 wifi extenders. That would cost be RM390.

Still cheaper but is it worth it since I will likely always have less than the 90-100% connectivity that I am supposed to have currently with the modem being on my work desk? = loss of speed.

Or is it better to use a LAN cable? Since my TV cabinet and my working desk is quite far, the distance could be shortened by going through outdoor.
Is there any LAN cable that can withstand this outdoor climate?
Will I lose speed?

Best Regards
