So, what's going to fill up this space? A list of pointers for owners of the RAZR series phones regarding modifying their phones to their own liking. Seem edits, information about P2K software and the like. Sure, all these resources are available at Motomodders and MotoX, but who wants to do the searching for themselves? I'm writing up this thread with one intention in mind - making sure that this becomes your one stop source for help regarding your phone.

Do note that I only own a Motorola RAZR V3i. Bear with me if problems pop up that I can't help you with. I'll do my best to support the RAZR V3 and RAZR V3x owners out there.

Getting Started
Alright, so you've got a Motorola RAZR phone and don't know what to do with it. Perhaps you've already installed Motorola Phone Tools (MPT) and have explored your phone in the constraints set by that software. Where do you go from there? The next logical step - hacking your Motorola RAZR.

Here's a question for you: why bother being content with what you've been given when you have the potential to do so much more? Your phone is a powerful piece of hardware - learn how to bend it to your needs.

You'll want to have easy access to the tools and software that are required to work with your RAZR series phone. Let's get started with a couple of sources for obtaining the software that you'll need when working with your phone. Take a look at the sources below.

Your best bet would be to look at one of these guides:

Note: Make sure that your Motorola RAZR is set to Data/Fax Connection under USB Settings. You can find this by going into the Menu, selecting Settings, Connection, USB Settings, and moving the left and right direction keys to select the appropriate connection mode.

I originally had some difficulty when trying to get my Motorola RAZR V3i to connect with my computer. Despite my USB Settings being set properly, I simply could not connect to my phone through any P2K software. I found that installing Motorola PST and running it before plugging in my phone helped. Alternatively, try running Motorola RSD Lite before plugging in your phone.

Some Basic Tricks

Let's Get Started!
Now you have both a working connection between your phone and your computer, and you should have some general knowledge of Motorola terminology. We'll get started with a few simple things first, just to help you get acquainted with your phone.

That Little Thing Called Software
Pretty much all the software that you will need to work with your phone can be found in the Motorola iMega Pack. I would recommend that you download P2K Tools Version 0.8.6 build 406 by Bezol, available for download from MotoX's Modding Software Downloads.

Make sure to bookmark MotoX's Modding Software Downloads for pretty much anything you need. You don't even need to register for these downloads

Installing Java Games and Applications
This is actually a much simpler process than one would think. As I own a Motorola RAZR V3i and a V3i only, I will not be able to help those users who cannot get the RAZR V3 application installation to work properly.

[STICKY]HOW TO PUT SKINS ON YOUR PHONE(P2KTOOLS)

If your skin has a custom cl.gif, startup and shutdown sounds, or startup and shutdown animations, there's a little more that you'll have to do.

Changing cl.gif
The cl.gif file is the image that is displayed on your RAZR's outer LCD display when the phone's flip cover is opened. See mine?

Note: The cl.gif file must have image dimensions 96x80 pixels and cannot be an animated .gif

There are two methods that you can use to change your cl.gif.

Method 1 - Replace the original
As mentioned in the page linked above, you can replace the cl.gif file that already exists in /a/mobile/system/. Use P2KTools or a similar P2K application to navigate to this directory. You may want to back up the original Motorola cl.gif. Simply upload your new cl.gif file into this directory, restart your phone, and look at the outer LCD screen. You did it!

Method 2 - Seem edit for cl.gif changes anytime, anywhere
The problem with the first method for cl.gif changes is that you must have access to a computer in order to change the cl.gif. What if you want to change cl.gif while you're on a trip? This method allows you to change cl.gif whenever you want.

Quick Change cl.gif on Motorola RAZR V3i!

This should work with the Motorola RAZR V3 as well. If you don't want to do your own seem edits, you can always download MotoX's Prehacked 0061 and 0062 SEEMs:

Save to /c/mobile/picture/c.gif
Save to /b/mobile/picture/c.gif

What's the difference between the two sets of hacked seems? Saving to /b/mobile/picture/c.gif is possible only if your RAZR has a MicroSD / TransFlash card slot. Saving to /c/mobile/picture/c.gif will work with all Motorola RAZR phones.

With this method, you can simply rename your desired outer LCD display image to c.gif, restart your phone, and move on! I'm using Method 2 right now.

Seem Edits
Seem edits were first mentioned in Method 2 - Seem edit for cl.gif changes anytime, anywhere. Let's get further into this very important part of Motorola hacking.

The Basics
To get started, read up:
Planet MotoX: Guide to Seem Editing

Seems control practically every aspect of your phone's operation. Learning how to control seems grants you control over your phone. Read up.

Note that you already have all the software that you need to begin SEEM editing if you downloaded the Motorola iMega Pack. If you haven't downloaded any SEEM editing software yet, it may be a good idea to do so now. Head on over to MotoX's Modding Software Downloads and pick up XVI32.

Note: When working with seems, it is always a good idea to keep backups on hand. Make sure to make backups of the stock seem before hacking it to bits. Keep your seems neat and orderly, like so:


Basic Seem Editing
Make sure you have downloaded and extracted P2KTools v0.8.6. Besides being a very useful piece of software, P2KTools can also be used for some basic seem editing. The best part about P2KTool's seemediting? You don't have to do anything except for hit a few checkboxes.

1. Open up P2KTools with your Motorola RAZR connected to your computer.
2. Click on the Other Features button on the menu
3. Press the Get button at the bottom of the screen
4. Navigate through the tabs (Java, Messages, Multimedia, Office Tools, Alerts, Other, Recent Calls) and check the boxes that you want to activate/deactive
5. When you're finished, press the Set button at the bottom of the screen

There you go. You just did some seem editing. Or rather, you had P2KTools do it for you. Easy, isn't it?

Seem Edits
SEEM Discovery for Video Camera

Fixing Unicode Support in SMS
A quick fix if your friends are receiving blank messages from you when you type in Chinese or other unicode charactersets.


The fix:

Use P2KTools.

Use P2KTools and open the Seem Editor.
1. Load SEEM 0032.0001 from the phone
2. Click on Offset 3F (the intersection between 030 and 0F)
3. CHECK bit 0, bit 1, bit 2, and bit 4
4. Save to Phone
5. Restart your phone

More Fun

Funlights
In the /c/mobile/audio folder, there is a file called funlight.pat. This file contains pattern information that directs your RAZR on which lights to turn on, and when. By replacing the original funlight.pat for an edited one, we can make the phone keypad backlight turn on and off when receiving calls, cycle between external lights when charging, etc.

Here's what the moto guide has to say about funlights.

Before we get started, take a look at Calling all funlight.pat Modders!. There are a handful of funlight.pat files available for download. You'll need to register with the MotoX forums in order to download them, though. The first post also has information on editing your own custom funlight.pat.

Enabling Funlights is easy:
1) Connect your RAZR series phone to your computer
2) Open P2KTools and refresh the directory structure
3) Navigate to /c/mobile/audio/ and find funlight.pat
4) Copy this original funlight.pat to a backup folder on your harddrive
5) Find your custom funlight.pat file and upload it to /c/mobile/audio
6) Click on the Other Features menu item and press Get
7) Click on the Multimedia menu item and check
CLUB_LIGHTS_AVAILABLE
CLUB_LIGHT_AVAILABLE
ALERT_LIGHTS_AVAILABLE
8) Restart your phone
9) Go to Settings >> Ring Styles
10) Choose any style (doesn't matter unless the funlight.pat has been written to use different patterns per style) and enjoy

OK I just got myself a V3.

I downloaded the driver pack from the link posted above.

But I can't seem to install the driver.

With the drivers that were linked to above, simply extract the .RAR archive to a convenient spot. Perhaps something on your desktop. Keep them all in one folder to make things easy.

When you plug in your Motorola phone with the USB mode set to Data/Fax Connection, Windows will pop up the Add New Hardware wizard. Don't allow the wizard to connect to Windows Update and direct the wizard to the drivers that you have extracted. Windows should recognize and install:

Accessories Interface
Data Logging MCU Interface
Motorola Test Command

Keep your phone plugged in and open up P2KTools or a similar P2K program to access your phone.

I'll make sure to add this when I get around to SEEM editing. Games for the V3i? Pretty much anything will run on it, from the best of my knowledge. Best to head over to the Java Software download page on Motomodders.net to get applications for your RAZR V3i. Refer to my second post in this thread for installation directions.

MotoMidMan v030 didn't work with my RAZR V3i so I found v038. Worked like a charm. I'll be holding onto this software.

I found the .JAR and have it backed up. PMed you, cyberloner.

uhm..can either software backup the phone's 100% pure condition?i mean..for example..i got my phone today..got home..plug it to the pc..

On the backup ? What do you mean complete ? Phone #, origiral ringtone, original settings, original flesh, etc ... i mean fully original new phone files ?

what i mean is all the original files at the new state..so in case of anything *touchwood*..i can restore as if its brand new condition

From what I understand, Flash Backup will make a complete backup of the phone's flash files. Your contacts will have to be backed up separately, as will your ring tones. SEEM edits? I don't know.

Use Motorola Phone Tools (included with your phone) to back up your Address Book. All the rest of the files can be backed up with P2KTools (ringtones, Java applications, skins)

What type of flash that is stable that i can use for Malaysia service ? Check out other forum, some flash lock certain service eg: Cingular

Flashing your phone requires the Flash files which can be found at MotoX and Motorola RSD Lite.

Regarding your question, cool123, you cannot install iTunes onto a non-iTunes V3i at this point in time. You'll have to make do with Motorola Digital Audio Player.

It might not even be necessary to flash or flex your phone. Have you tried the Master Reset and Master Clear options in the Personalize menu?

You'll have to use P2KTools, your USB cable, and the phone itself. Skins have to be installed directly onto the phone.

the Security code has been changed and i dont know the code....how do i master reset the phone and hopefuly reset the code to 000000 again?

Your unit has iTunes? If you're not afraid to flash, then you can reflash with a monster pack. That'll update your phone's software and flex, and will also clear off anything that's on there.

In Hangzhou right now. I'll be back in KL in a number of days.

lokgotz, doing any modding will technically void your warranty. Then again, how important are those, anyways? If you are really unwilling to do your own flashing, then it's best to take the phone down to a Motorola service center. Then you have the assurance that even if something goes wrong, it's not your fault.

As for the V3x, I don't know what to do. I'm still trying to troubleshoot an issue with my phone and sending messages in Simplified Chinese.

before u flash ur phone, make sure u make a complete backup for ur phone.
in case u really screw up, u still can use the backup.

however, if u flashed ur phone without backing up, u may have serious consequences. sometimes if the bootloader is changed, then u will brick ur phone

Flashes done to your Motorola phone from home are generally safe. Do keep in mind that Monsterpack flashes can upgrade the Bootloader. Provided that you read the guides about flashing, you should be set.

I'm charging up my V3i right now, feel terribly uncomfortable after drinking a little too much last night, but I'll try a flash later and see how things go. Also need to do a SEEM edit to fix up my Chinese messaging.

but problem is iTunes only limit 50 songs

Some phones have iTunes locked at 100 songs. I don't know which regions or carriers have iTunes locked at different levels. My V3i was a carrier-free AP set, 50 song limit.

i think u can crack the limit using seem edit.

The V3i has rather basic functions. You've got your Bluetooth, MicroSD card slot for additional memory, SMS, MMS, Web Browser, speakerphone. It's a decent phone, its feature set is not exactly rich in today's standards. The styling is its main selling point.
If you read the first few posts in this thread, you'll have a better understanding of the terms. When you flash the phone, you are rewriting the memory with a new software revision, language pack, etc. This may fix some old software-related problems or give your phone new functionality.
