Kies is pretty USELESS  for backing up applications (unless you have very few). Uncheck the applications and backup other stuff like address book etc is ok.
If you include applications, it will take forever and not complete.... It only succeeded for me when the applications were 250MB or less.

Recommend you use Titanium Backup Pro.

If i remember correctly, titanium need rooted device rite? Is that means non rooted got no real software to backup apps?

TitaniumBackup has a free version which has a certain limitation.

If i'm not mistaken you can still backup as usual.

I think TitaniumBackup's "Pro" version has additional features like Dropbox linked or smth like that.

Correct me if i'm wrong :3

AFAIK using Titanium Backup without root, you can still backup apps but not apps+apps data
FYI - With Kies, backing up applications does not mean your apps data gets backup anyway, only the apps.

For un-rooted phone you cannot do data backup (example : your games app scores) but you can backup the games apk.
Use AndroZip File Manager to do all your apps apk backup.
For contacts you can use Gmail itself or use Super Backup appto do backup on contacts..logs..sms..bookmarks. i think this Super Backup app also can do your apps apk backup.
For songs..photos..videos..you can use external sdcard.

Switching custom or stock roms..?

Custom roms - read at that custom rom thread instruction.
Stock roms - for same version (JB to JB) no need to do full wipe. Enough by doing wipe cache and dalvik.

1. advisable to back up.. (sms and whatsapp)
2. sync your contacts with google contacts so that your phone numbers wont be lost. you may check your contacts at https://www.google.com/contacts/
3. backup your files (images,vids,etc)

after that you may perform flashing.
however, just because you've done flashing doesnt mean its completed.

learn about flash counters, yellow triangle issues (if happen), and learn how to use CWM (recovery).
everything can be absorbed on xda! nod.gif
