My ol' ultrasharp 2407WFP is showing signs of old age

so I am in the market to find a new IPS type LCD to replace the old PVA one

so my current one is 1920x1200rez coupled with a 42" LCD TV @ 1920x1080rez

Last I heard, nvidia and amd new GC cards is a b**** in power saving, as the different resolution monitor sort of disable the power saving feature
I dun do dual monitor, only for like playing movies and such will I use the LCD TV
but the HDMI cable is always connected.

so is it better to get a new Dell U2312HM @ 1080 or a Dell U2412M @ 1200
have got used to the 1200 rez for ~5 years already

it the 120 lines gonna be missed?
*
120 pixels, if you can get use to it (like me now) then it's of no problem, otherwise 120 pixels height is quite plenty for some people whom got used to 16:10.

QUOTE(munyen @ Oct 24 2012, 11:13 AM)
Currently considering this monitor, Samsung S24B350H
What u guyz think?
I see u all recommend DELL very much
What's the comparison of spec like?
Help pls, thx

You most likely will miss it big time. If you are used to 24" 1200p 23" 1080p will look a lot smaller.

Take the Dell! That's not even a comparison any more, Dell's current offering beats LG big time (overall value and service).

Unless you're looking at "cheapest possible".

Just curious, why most of you proposed Dell UltraSharp U2312HM instead of Dell S series S2340L? Both the online price are almost the same, S2340L - RM576 and U2312HM - RM589. Both also IPS (In-Plane Switching).

One of the difference is connectivity. S2340L is using VGA & HDMI, U2312HM is using (DVI-D), DisplayPort (DP), Video Graphics Array (VGA). May I ask a question, I thought HDMI should be better than DVI? Anyone has usued Display Port, is there any difference than HDMI or DVI?

I have seen a Dell S Series LCD demo unit, and I feel that the screen is almost near to retina display.

the whole HDMI versus DP has no effect on consumer/normal user apart from what connector your mostly use to connect your GC/Monitors/LCD/LED/3D tvs.

HDMI in layman is basically DVI + a converter for sound. Hence you will notice if you use HDMI in a monitor that has a built in speaker, it produces sound with just a single cable.

And the main con for DVI is lack of support for HDCP encryption that enable you to play full HD Blu-rays and other HD content

HDMI for manufacturer are royalty charged per device while DP is royalty-free. Both support HDCP.

HDMI hails from the world of TVs, DVD players and consumer electronics. It takes as its starting point S-VHS and composite signals. DisplayPort hails from the computer chaps and uses a more sophisticated and flexible data transmission method.

So between your choices, it boils down to which connector is your main cables.

For future proof i would go DP as most modern Gc supports DP plus you can always get a converter to go HDMI with no problem. Unless of course you totally do not have any device that supports DP. Then just go HDMI.

Note:

HDMI as of version 1.4 theoretically has about 10.2GB/s vs DP 1.2 17.28GB/s bandwidth

It is only based on your own preference, for me I choose the LG IPS237L (which i own it) compare to Dell. Why? Because i just love LG (well LG is the korean famous brand for manufacturing monitor). Dell just wins in term of service and warranty. So again, it is your PERSONAL preference.

HDMI carries both video and audio and mainly designed and used for LED/HD TV not for LED/HD monitor but still it is usable for LED/HD monitor, no quality change at all. DVI carries video only. Both has the same quality there is nothing like hdmi is better than dvi or the opposite.

but do note that some monitors have problem using hdmi (the overscan issue), whereby the display appears to be smaller due to black bars surrounding it.

Not exactly true, HDMI and DP are incompatible formats only some DP ports have DVI/HDMI bypass.... Digital to digital converters are expensive

Guys, recently just got a mini DP > DP port from ebay.

Last night tried it between my M14X and U2312HM.
At first it was ok. After that, the screen will start flickering then in the end, non-stop.

Then I googled and found quite a number of this case happened to Dell's ultra sharp monitor.

Now not sure whether is the cable prob or monitor >.<
