But you need to keep in mind that you will lose VOIP and future IPTV features if you decide to use your own custom router.
*
Why is it so?

Your VoIP and IPTV VLAN settings are still LEFT untouched inside your BTU. All you have to do in future is just swap back your Thompson to have the service reenabled.

Better still if you can convince the TM technician can configure the BTU to strip the VLANs on one of the other 3 ports. Leave port 1 as it is.
Just enable port binding on either port 2-4 (whichever you want) and untick VLAN tagging. Leave LAN port 1 as it is.

I'm sure many of those who subscribed the RM118 package earlier won't be bothered about the the IPTV and calls. It's very high posibility the pay TV charges will be incurred extra.

So yeah, just leave port 1 as it is and make the BTU unstrip the VLAN on the other ports for the use of your 3rd party router.
Any service you want to continue using in future should you change your mind, just plug your Thompson into port 1. The TM technician will have to make another visit to your home anyway if there's any changes.

Greetings!

Just got my maxis fibre line installed today, TM technicians setup the modem, while Maxis techs configured the router, did a speedtest, and took the bloody router away. Apparently some directive from the top requires them to send all remaining routers back to HQ. You won't imagine the amount of crap-spinning i got from customer service, about the router being out of stock la, only left demo unit la bla bla bla, when the tech told me it was a brand new unit.

Anyway, was told that i can only get the router after the 25th, which is a good 2 weeks from now! How'ma gonna pass my Raya hols yo!

So now i'm staring at the HG850A modem with an active link, just no router to dial it. Any quick solutions, like direct dialing from a PC or can i use my DIR-300(flashed with DD-WRT) to dial the connection?

PS: Even temporary solutions are fine as long as i can use it till the router arrives?

Jumped the gun and bought a TP-Link 1043ND.

After countless hours, I still havent managed to setup my connection.

Here are the steps i did:
1. Flash router to OpenWRT
2. Connect port 2 of HG850A -> TPLink WAN
3. Add VLan tag 621
4. Edit Wan interface to PPPOE, change physical settings to VLAN Interface: "eth0.621" (wan)

I notice that WAN doesn't light up when its connected to the HG850A. Under interfaces the WAN interface also appears greyed out. I am at a loss~!

Edit: After losing much hair, finally solved the problem by tagging and connecting vlan to eth port 1 instead of WAN port.

VOIP with maxis is no longer from the BTU but from the router provided by maxis. IPTV would be still possible I guess, as we know it's VLAN tagged at 82x.

Secondly, I don't think the technician would be able to do that or don't think they'd know how. I've seen them configuring the BTU, they just connect it via the proprietary adapter to the console and run a script. This is true for the Fiberhome BTU, the Huawei ones are configurable via LAN port.

If you can get online with the custom router, that means maxis already started your billing cycle without even providing you the thomson router ?

okey, Now I can connect to the modem and fiddle around with it. But still no success.

The Modem is the ZTE ZXDSL 931 series, where I can't find the ptm1.621 connection on it as mentioned on the first page guide. Any idea??

Is it because of my old router that does not support some protocol or method necessary to make this connection? I'm currently trying with an old Belkin Wireless G router

Yes, u need a router with vlan tagging capability eg. Tplink 1043ND. Read this thread over and over and over again.

Darn it. It seems that not-VLAN-tagging capable router capability mentioned here is only works for Unifi.

http://www.azim.my/unifi/

Need to buy a new router then. Damn you Maxis

i'm not really sure but that method should work for maxis fiber also
just a bit modification & you need to do some trial and error
the chance of you using your own router is higher because u can actually access the btu

good luck smile.gif

Folks,
Finally got my Mikrotik router (RB751G) to be my main router connected TM's fibre modem and Thomson relegated for only VOIP connection/phone (Passthrough via Mikrotik).

On the Mikrotik, can also configured Netwach to detect Maxis internet disconnections and to reestablish PPPOE connection immediately.

Will try to document the instructions and share when I have a bit more time smile.gif

Hi Guys,

My situation with Maxis fiber is as follows:

They came to install the fiber for me yesterday. Installation was completed and line tested. However, they gave me everything, the fiber line, modem (not Huawei) BUT not the router and phones. This is because they ran out of stock for the Thomson routers and could only supply the new customers (me included) the Thomson router after Raya.

So, in the evening, I decided to go buy myself a router with VLAN capabilities. I settled for TP-LINK WR841ND (as I see that Peacelover had place a guide for us to configure the network to allow internet connection without using the thomson router).

As the modem is not huawei and I could not link my notebook the the modem, I decide not to touch the modem but work around the situation.

This is what I did:

1. set up the TL-WR841ND, connect a lan cable from its Wan port to port 2 of the modem (this is due to the binding peacelover mentioned above, i stuck with port 2 of the modem).

2. linked port 2 of the TL-WR841ND (let's call this the TL router from now on) to my notebook.

3. Login to the TL router, set its IP as (192.168.1.254)

4. Under WAN settings, I followed peacelover's advise. i.e. choose PPPoE/Russioan PPPoE; inserted the maxis login id (XXX@home.maxis.com.my); entered the password (XXX1) and attemp to connect to the internet... waiting happily for the connection.

5. however, connection failed.. Checking on the system log in the TL router, I noticed packeages being sent to the modem but modem failed to response (the error was - 'timeout waiting for PADO packets').

What I noticed about the modem is that the power light and the PON light is permanently on (no blinking). However, the port 2 lan light is blinking (indication of package movement).

As for the TL router, the internet light and the Port 2 lan light was blinking whilst the power light was permanently on..

With that said, can a network guru/sifu advise me where I went wrong here?.. or did Maxis deactivate my connection after the complete installation due to them not being able to furnish me with the Thomson Modem? Are there any abnormality on the behavior of the modem and TL-router?..

Do hope to read some advise here soon as I would love be be connected to the net via Maxis Fiber before Raya..

Thank you in advance, guru's/sifu's..

not using the same router as you but you can try flash openwrt at your own risk
http://downloads.openwrt.org/backfire/10.03.1-rc4/ar71xx/
find your router here... flash the openwrt firmware
and follow this guide and do some changes...
http://klseet.com/index.php/tl-wr941nd-ver...-unifi-on-trunk
on the vlan set 621...
it's all on your own good luck smile.gif

Yeap, I would recommend the TP-Link WR1043ND. Works for me.

On how to tag the VLAN 621, let me further add to klseet's tutorial. Focus on the part where he tags VLAN500 and ignore the VLAN600, as that's for the IPTV. Just change the value for 500 to 621 and you should be good to go.

Wow!! thanx sifu's finally I got a direction to follow.. Seems like we have to crack into the router setting and make some drastic modifications.. From the looks of it (the process flow), I think my TL-WR841ND could be rewired so.

On, my next few questions:

I noticed there are 4 files on WR841ND in the openwrt site:

openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v3-squashfs-factory.bin 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3932160
openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v3-squashfs-sysupgrad..> 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3670016
openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v5-squashfs-factory.bin 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3932160
openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v5-squashfs-sysupgrad..> 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3547140

my TL-WR841ND is on V7.2. So, which of the files above i should be downloading to flash my TL-WR841ND router?.. 0.o

Also, the VLAN tagging, I should you 621 instead of the 600 or 500 as per example, right?

Either version is fine but make sure you flash using the factory FW first then once you're on openwrt already then you upgrade with the sysupgrade FW. So you need to download two FW of that version you going to use. I would recommend these two:

openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v5-squashfs-factory.bin 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3932160
openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr841nd-v5-squashfs-sysupgrad..> 20-Nov-2010 04:30 3547140

Yes, maxis uses VLAN 621. 500 and 600 are UniFi's for data and IPTV respectively.
