ok.. the past few days had been nighmarish for me.. lol..

i managed to flash my tl-wr851nd to openwry version 7.. however, that version does not come with the gui installed.. (my router wont allow version 5 to be installed @_@)

anyway, i followed klseet guide in installing luci.. but failed miserably.. this is my hurdle now.. i believe if i can get luci installed into the router, other steps should be straight forward..

ok.. this is my prob on luci installation..

to install luci, i need an internet connection.. according to klseet, by just plug in a cat1 cable to the router's wan port (that i had just flashed) to a lan port for another router that has internet connection would give me the internet connection i need.. well, i tried and it failed... i.e i used a cat1 lan cable which my nb has internet connection to and plugged it in to the wr8541nd's wan port and could not ping the outside world.. i check the network configuration for the router and noted that its ip was 192.168.1.1 (gateway and dns as well).. the internet connection's gate way and dns for the other router (which has internet connection) was 192.168.0.1.

so, i tried changing the network file for the router by changing the router's ip address to 192.168.0.111 and the gateway and dns to 192.168.0.1 (this was done in the network file in /etc/config) but still could not connect to the internet @_@

i read more and noticed that i could also connect to the internet by mobilephone dataplan.. upon further reading, i need to install the usb device into the router which inturn means i need an internet connection to the router ont he 1st place.. @_@

anyone can advise me where i went wrong with the 1st setup, pls?.. if the other router (with internet connection) has its ip as 192.168.0.1 and its gateway and dns the same, what should i do with the wr841nd to get it to connect to the internet via that router?.. what is the configuration i need to do in the router?..

do hope someone could guide me (a network noob) here.. LoL..

looking forward to some guidance.. thanx smile.gif

Hhmm. Guys. I'd like to confirm 1 thing on this.

1) Maxis uses 2 diff Vlan ID for HSI
Those using TM Modem (Vlan Tag is 621)
Those using Modem provided by Maxis (Vlan Tag is 11) [The following setting is based on this]

Please refer to Attachment. This is a Thomson Config file i've downloaded for backup.
Attached Image

Also I'd like to share my experience using TPLink 1043ND router with Huawei Echolife HG8240 & Thomson (mainly for VoIP)

All Vlan Tagging are done on the TPlink router hence there is no need to configure the Echolife HG8240. *I'd like to point out that not everyone is done in this manner, hence please check before following the guide.

This is how my wiring setup
Attached Image

This is how i've configure the Switch & Vlan Tagging Setting (Under Network --> Switch)

for those that have done this Reverting back to old Bootloader as this fix the WAN port issue. You can use ur WAN port instead of port 4 then the VLan ID tagging should be as follows.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

then save & apply

This is the WAN Setting (Under Network -- > Interface --> WAN)
Attached Image
Change the setting to VLAN Interface eth0.11

then save & apply

Then under General Setup (Under Network -- > Interface --> WAN)
Change protocol to PPPOE
enter username xxxxx@home.maxis.com.my or xxxxx@public.maxis.com.my
password is usually the xxxxx1 (where xxxxx represents the 5 digit before @home.maxis)

Save & apply..

You are done smile.gif

Edited.

To get the WAN port to work.. you can follow this guide smile.gif

Bro,
Thanks for sharing your detailed explanation. This is really helpful. By the way, why you want to connect your modem to the router port 5 instead of port 1 which is the WAN port?

Bro,

Can you share how you configure the VOIP passthrough? I'm interested to get this router but am unsure how to setup the VOIP. Thanks.

QUOTE(88sales88 @ Aug 9 2012, 09:07 PM)
Folks,
Finally got my Mikrotik router (RB751G) to be my main router connected TM's fibre modem and Thomson relegated for only VOIP connection/phone (Passthrough via Mikrotik).

On the Mikrotik, can also configured Netwach to detect Maxis internet disconnections and to reestablish PPPOE connection immediately.

Will try to document the instructions and share when I have a bit more time smile.gif

This is because the new bootloader which TP-Link 1043ND builtin for Hardware Version 1.8 (some) & 1.9 which disable the WAN port, due to a bug. However you can still use the WAN port for other brand or model provided the other brand don't use the similar method

Yup ... is totally find if you found other routers which support Vlan tagging by default, then you don't need to use custom firmware. smile.gif

Actually regardless whether it's 1.8 or 1.9, you can still use it. Living proof here. Will post up a tutorial with sreenshots and files when I get the time. Hopefully this weekend.

I'm very interested if you manage to get the 1043ND WAN port working for OpenWRT, and how wink.gif
Unless your method is downgrading to older stock firmware with older bootloader, that is very risky as I've read somewhere that you cannot flash OpenWRT straight to stock firmware with bootloader in it, will permanently brick it.

Found it,

Warning!
This section describes actions that might damage your device or firmware. Proceed with care!

With the WR1043ND router, there is a catch: the stock firmware is obtained from the OEM: http://www.tplink.com/en/support/download/?model=TL-WR1043ND

•in case the file name of this firmware file does not contain the word "boot" in it, you can simply revert back to original firmware
•in case the file name of this firmware file does contain the word "boot" in it, you need to cut off parts of the image file before flashing it:
An example of an image file with the word "boot" in it is wr1043nv1_en_3_9_17_up_boot(091118).bin.

Cut the first 0x20200 (that is 131,584 = 257*512) Bytes from original firmware:

dd if=orig.bin of=tplink.bin skip=257 bs=512

This has been confirmed by supertom64

To all Gurus,

My Maxis setup came with the Huawei HG850a and I am trying to get it to work with a TP-LINK WDR4300 ( Factory stock firmware ). From what I can gather from the postings thus far is, logging in to the modem and making the necessary changes are next to impossible.

My question is couldn't I just get a Huawei Echolife HG655a VDSL Modem to replace the Huawei HG850a to get it working?

Any help is definitely appreciated. Thanks in advance guys.

1) you need to figure out the Admin login for the Thomson router.

Username : Administrator (*take note it is case sensitive. make sure it is capital A)
Password : <access key> at the back of your router label.

2) Then login using the Administrator account
3) On the Thomson Gateway menu, click Configuration.
4) In the Pick a task list, click Save or Restore Configuration.
5) Under Backup current configuration, click Backup Configuration Now.
6) The Thomson Gateway prompts you to save your backup file.
7) Save your file to a location of your choice.
8) use text editor to open the file.
