morning all, got few brands of 2.5" external hdd on-hand and i plan to take apart one of those to put inside my laptop, i dun mind wty void, just need to ensure the sata connection is not soldered, any insight? thks!

Got my Buffalo PNTU3 1.0T. As I heard once sending for warranty, all data will be gone and come back like a new hard disk. Any idea how to back up those files in hard disk? Get another backup?

If you have space for another hard disk then you can backup to another and send current faulty for warranty, otherwise as normal warranty procedure, you won't get your data back even it just repair the parts not holding the data.

Sad. Maybe backup to cloud is the best as secondary backup.

I would like to get more opinions, if I should just get a simple 3.5 inch external HDD, or get a WD Red/Black + external case. I usually stored 1080p movies and I don't like to lose them >.<

Of course getting a WD Red/Black + external case is much more expensive, but is it worthy? Need some advice

I also thought of going for 2 WD Red and do a RAID 1..but that costs more haha

EDIT: Also, I read that WD Red is more for 24/7 usage. Since I'm just doing backup, is it really necessary or worth it to get WD Red?

What's your budget of spending on these? And what capacity are you looking at?
Those play big different in setting up your personal storage, be it USB or NAS.
If you want to go cheap, you can buy 2 USB storage and have them copy the same thing but more works to be done since you're copying twice but this save you from paying another amount for NAS, NAS can range from RM300~600 for 2 bays depends on the brand and model you choose.

I'm not quite sure about budget yet, but I would like to know if it makes much much difference between the 2 setups

Hmm..its a good idea to just get 2 HDDs and copy the same thing! Yes, more works need to be done, but its not that I have to be in front of my comp when I copy/paste those files. Just the syncing part that I need to worry about (if I delete or rename any files, I need to do it at both HDDs)

No budget, so you can spend extra right? Then go for RAID1 setup with 2x 2TB, any NAS should be suitable for you.
But the external USB HDD can be handy as well for extra backup purpose, RAID1 simply mirror what you have on to both HDD so if there's any mistake or unnatural disaster (virus, accidental delete, etc.) then your data is "bye-bye", so keeping "extra" backup is always a good practice if you value your data.
RAID1 only useful if you afraid of losing data "on-the-fly" (sudden HDD failure, bad sectors, etc.)

Good PSU can warrant longer HDD lifespan but sometimes it's just luck I guess
SSD however may also suffer for the same, possibly even worst when it comes to blackout/electric shock situation.
Buy good PSU, protected by a good UPS and your system may last longer than you possibly imagine.

p/s: Just like buying insurance for your home, car, and yourself, PC needs insurance as well.

Hi guys, forgive me if this is the wrong section to post for this question.

My WD HDD recently became faulty (windows asks to format when plugged in) but I managed to pull out the important data with recovery software.

The question now is: Can I write zero before sending it back to the shop I bought to RMA? It's still within the 3 year warranty. I'm worried if the shop will not replace since write zero might "fix" the problem I'm having now.

Better to zero b4 send otherwise your P&C info is there.

PSU looks good, but I'm still not so sure about the input power source, home's electricity does play another role.
How old is your PSU?

Yes, you may writes zeroes to the HDD in case you need to protect your P&C stuff.
You may also check the SMART (HDDScan) after write zeroes to check for any "...sector" attribute value.
"Reallocated sector count", "Pending sector count", etc. These are few attribute that you need to have a lookout for, otherwise you can post your SMART result here and we all can have a look.

I ran the WD Lifeguard Diagnostics extended scan, no problems. (no bad sectors) I then wrote zero, and then the HDD isn't showing up when plugged in anymore.

I sent it to RMA. Hopefully can replace. :/
