Hi guys,

I'm planning to get a 2TB 3.5 inch external HDD, but not sure which one should I get:

1. Just get a 2TB external (WD/Seagate/Buffalo) OR
2. Get WD Red NAS 2TB with Rock 3.5 inch external casing

I usually store HD movies in these external HDDs, so I believe WD Red is more suitable for me since I read reviews that it's suppose to have longer life span..right?

I've had a 1TB MyBook before, died after almost 3 years but luckily able to replace the HDD via warranty. My friends 1TB Passport also full of bad sectors after few months on usage..so kinda have a bad impression on WD HDDs sad.gif

Please advise. Thanks!

Both options are great
But I more prefer Option 2 with WD Green becoz its cheaper (Price 2TB Red = 3TB Green). Not sure about reliability, I guess its about luck
Note that WD Green have warranty 2 yrs, WD Red & WD MyBook 3 yrs
So take your pick

It seems that ppl here are recommending more towared WD Black or WD Red, coz of longer warranty and better reliability..hmm.. hmm.gif

In the end, it's up to you to make the decision. Just giving my opinion smile.gif

Yeah I know smile.gif

I would like to get more opinions, if I should just get a simple 3.5 inch external HDD, or get a WD Red/Black + external case. I usually stored 1080p movies and I don't like to lose them >.<

Of course getting a WD Red/Black + external case is much more expensive, but is it worthy? Need some advice smile.gif

I also thought of going for 2 WD Red and do a RAID 1..but that costs more haha sad.gif

EDIT: Also, I read that WD Red is more for 24/7 usage. Since I'm just doing backup, is it really necessary or worth it to get WD Red?

What's your budget of spending on these? And what capacity are you looking at?
Those play big different in setting up your personal storage, be it USB or NAS.
If you want to go cheap, you can buy 2 USB storage and have them copy the same thing but more works to be done since you're copying twice but this save you from paying another amount for NAS, NAS can range from RM300~600 for 2 bays depends on the brand and model you choose.

I'm not quite sure about budget yet, but I would like to know if it makes much much difference between the 2 setups smile.gif

I'm looking at 2TB.

I'm not using for NAS, just backup purposes, so is WD Red suitable for me? Or just get the normal external HDD?

I'm looking at Hotway 2-bay RAID enclosure, I think its the most common for now:

Hmm..its a good idea to just get 2 HDDs and copy the same thing! Yes, more works need to be done, but its not that I have to be in front of my comp when I copy/paste those files. Just the syncing part that I need to worry about (if I delete or rename any files, I need to do it at both HDDs)

Just wondering, if I'm going for RAID 1 2x2TB, is WD Red suitable? I mean, I'm just backing up, now using it to transfer files via Network..

Hi guys,

I'm planning to get a NAS, Synology 415+, mainly use for download and stream movies to TV.

Please advice where can I get the best price for WD Red 4TB, 5TB, and 6TB. Or should I wait for Black Friday? tongue.gif

Thanks!
