thank you so much! i dont have other hDD or desktop to do the testing,so i will try the SMART thing, haha, not really understand, but will google.

if it's working, do you know the "market price" for these types ofused hard disk?  tongue.gif

I don't think there'll be any "market price" for this hard disk unless some desperate enough to buy the PATA type of which is just darn rare now even you do found one, it's 1GB per RM, doh.gif crazy expensive.

You can use HDDScans to get the SMART after you connect successfully to your Windows PC, then try to verify the issue from there, if you can't get the SMART through the USB controller then you need to plug into a desktop system and get it from there.
If your HDD does not support SMART then you can try to verify by plug-in other HDD of the same size into the external casing and see if the same issue arise.
Also test your current HDD by plug-in to a normal desktop system and test it to see if it has trouble starting up, normally you can hear the sound better by locate the HDD outside of the casing, you should be able to hear the motor and head seeking noise.

Good luck. wink.gif

p/s: Hope you can understand my language, I'm pretty straight forward here, assuming you know some of the technical get around. blush.gif

oh, i tried HDDScan, but the SMART button is disabled, so i guess the HDD does not support SMART. tough luck. blush.gif

Wanted to buy a new external harddisk, but why got so many different variants with the same capacity but different price from 1 manufacturer? (BTW, I want to buy from IPMart is it reliable?)

http://www.ipmart.com.my/main/product/WD,M...php?prod=378478

and

http://www.ipmart.com.my/main/product/West...php?prod=351129

Why got RM10 difference? The expensive one better?

or should I go back to Seagate?

http://www.ipmart.com.my/main/product/Seag...php?prod=351904

Because currently I have been using my Seagate FreeAgent GO 320GB for more than 4 years and it is still running well, just that its storage is full already, no way I am going to delete files in them
*
i also have a unit of seagate 320gb still working very great, but cannot compare with nowadays low QC seagate ext hdd, more than 50% of my company usb seagate aldy sent warranty before. doh.gif

Either one should be fine I guess, base on luck though, my WD Green 1TB broke down (too much bad sectors) after the warranty expired.
But I guess Seagate RMA procedure is much simple, never done WD RMA before.

RMA wise both service are equally good, just that seagate always return refurbished set (100%, no exception one), and wd got 50-50 chance in getting repaired vs retail new set, and sometimes with newer model + bigger capacity laugh.gif

Oh... really? Last my Samsung RMA drive is quite new or am I not sensitive enough to notice it?
The returned drive seems new to me, no scratches at all, board were clean, no sign of being repaired (or like I said above?) sweat.gif doh.gif

But that darn drive (WDC) died on me when it just expired... cry.gif

yup, the returned samsung is indeed smells like new set but with "recertified" wording on it, even check with hdd sentinel also showing 0hr Power ON time and 2x Start/Stop count, just that i dun know the platter inside is repaired or really brand new, i just hate the "re-certified" wording laugh.gif

Ah that "Seagate Certified Repair" sticker or sort of, need to take my PC off sometimes this week to have a look if it really has that sticker (didn't notice doh.gif ), my previous portable 320GB Seagate does has that "Seagate Certified Repair".
I already have 2 out of 3 of my 2TB Samsung sent for RMA (1 in 2011, 1 in 2012), HD204UI some more... HD203WI still running, hopefully no problem. sweat.gif

Hi guys,

My MyBook Essential 2TB Usb3.0 cannot startup and it made some weird buzzing noise. So, I disassembled it and took out the SATA hard drive.

My question is can I access it using a docking station or a Usb to SATA adapter?

I heard some say that the USB controller board must be used to access it.

Bad sectors symptom, use SMART to check for keywords "sector" or just post the SMART result here if you don't know what they do, some attributes are only for information.
You can use a software call Low Level Format or similar disk wipe tool to perform deep "clean" of the disk, sometimes it may fix the "Pending sector count", means it's temporary issue, if "Reallocated sector count" increases then prepare to scrape your HDD, the surface is already damaged beyond repair.

You already answered your own question so yes, SSD for OS and some programs, little games if you like your games to load faster, normal HDD for storing huge files (picture, music, video, etc.) which does not really require speedy load time.
Normal user only needs 128GB for daily usage including programs & documents as well.
Heavy gamer probably can go for 256GB if they needs to install plenty of games (current games is darn huge) and they can afford it. wink.gif
