I bought an external 3.5" drive yesterday, everything is working fine but my computer doesn't recognize the drive if I switch on the ext HDD before I boot my computer, it'll only work if I switch the ext HDD on after I boot into Windows. Is this normal? sweat.gif

Bad sectors symptom, use SMART to check for keywords "sector" or just post the SMART result here if you don't know what they do, some attributes are only for information.
You can use a software call Low Level Format or similar disk wipe tool to perform deep "clean" of the disk, sometimes it may fix the "Pending sector count", means it's temporary issue, if "Reallocated sector count" increases then prepare to scrape your HDD, the surface is already damaged beyond repair.

Thanks rclxms.gif i ran the WD Align to check the HD,it says already aligned. then i ran another software which is WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic.i choose to do the quick diagnostic, then it shows FAIL. is it indicate that my HD is totally damaged? and if i RMA the HD,is it better,or i can fix it by my own?

another question is,i already formatted the HD, is there any method to retrieve back my files instead send it to manufacturer?

Hi guys,

I'm planning to get a 2TB 3.5 inch external HDD, but not sure which one should I get:

1. Just get a 2TB external (WD/Seagate/Buffalo) OR
2. Get WD Red NAS 2TB with Rock 3.5 inch external casing

I usually store HD movies in these external HDDs, so I believe WD Red is more suitable for me since I read reviews that it's suppose to have longer life span..right?

I've had a 1TB MyBook before, died after almost 3 years but luckily able to replace the HDD via warranty. My friends 1TB Passport also full of bad sectors after few months on usage..so kinda have a bad impression on WD HDDs sad.gif

Please advise. Thanks!

You can try using data recovery software like Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery, etc.
There's some free one out there using Hiren's BootCD bundles.
You can try to wipe it using the WD included diagnose software, can't remember what's the program's name though. Something to do with disk wipe.

You can try disk wipe software (Low Level Format is one of it) to wipe the disk clean to manufacturer default settings then start align/create partition from there.
If this fail could means the surface is damage beyond repair or the controller itself is fried/corrupted. This is the EOL, nothing you can do other than RMA or paper weight.

Both options are great
But I more prefer Option 2 with WD Green becoz its cheaper (Price 2TB Red = 3TB Green). Not sure about reliability, I guess its about luck
Note that WD Green have warranty 2 yrs, WD Red & WD MyBook 3 yrs
So take your pick

Got my Buffalo PNTU3 1.0T. As I heard once sending for warranty, all data will be gone and come back like a new hard disk. Any idea how to back up those files in hard disk? Get another backup? rclxub.gif

If you have space for another hard disk then you can backup to another and send current faulty for warranty, otherwise as normal warranty procedure, you won't get your data back even it just repair the parts not holding the data.

Sad. Maybe backup to cloud is the best as secondary backup.
