Do you guys think it is going to take long? If supply is short means sales is low too. Then how those HDD manufacturer makes money and survive?
*
with the acquisition of samsung by seagate and hitachi by wd, and thus the only 2 big players in the hdd market, it is definitely not something to get excited about frm end-user perspective shakehead.gif

I see. Thank you very much for the information.

How long do these bad sector RMA's usually take?
*
had rma-ed quite a numbers of hdd; samsung i claimed frm local samsung service centre whereas hitachi, wd, seagate i poslaju back, usually 7 - 10 days i get the replacement unit regardless of bad sectors or faulty pcb.

Still Seagate changes its major Barracuda line to 1 year warranty sucks.
Seagate warranty is awesome, better than WD you have to pay for pickup service after 6 months if you opt not to send it to Singapore yourself.
*
i poslaju back to them, does sg provide pick-up service?

you just bought the hd 204ui? blink.gif
where and how much?
*
nope, bought it in Mar 2011 as data storage, so the exact total power-on time is only 5-days (as reported by Hard Disk Sentinel)

i doubt hdd is going back to previous price at anytime soon as demand > supply at the moment

i was told that even notebook manufacturers need to bid for oem hdd (in blocks) blush.gif

BTW the price has dropped by RM10 according to today's pricelist! RM529
*

3TB/3 = RM173 seems about the right price.

But I would much prefer multiple drives for reliability if 1 of them fail = 1TB data gone, not 3TB smile.gif

yup, that is my worry too dry.gif

i think eventually all need to get tape for crucial data backup as hdd seems rather fragile but how many are afford to get the tape drive...

tape is the most reliable method since we r talking about reliability over here. dvd/blu-ray media is another option too for data safekeeping rather than hdd.

It isn't the most reliable storage mechanism. While tape or optical media is stored offline, you wouldn't know if they get damaged by a bad storage environment or self-degradation (optical media) or not. I have a number of friends whose anime or video collection burned to DVDs has self-destructed since they last burned it a decade ago.

The most reliable storage mechanism is a live and highly redundant RAID array, where you can detect failures and replace unusable HDDs as needed.

Furthermore, not only you are assured of data availability, you also have instantaneous random access to any of your data. It is something that both tape and optical media cannot provide, as you will need to locate the appropriate tape or optical media and load them before you can access them. Again, once burned to DVDs, it is extremely rare to see anyone going through the effort of locating and loading them into DVD-ROMs and watch the contents at a whim.

thks for lengthy info sharing smile.gif

fyi, my 14 years-old kodak cd are still ok until today n i still keeping them, my luck maybe wink.gif

for corporate normally they backup using tapes, agree that raid maybe a good option for home user nod.gif

CDs are actually much more suitable than DVDs and Blu-ray for long term storage, because their data pits are many times larger and it will take that much longer for oxidation to erase these pits. Of course, you have to pay for all the extra discs, burn 7x more discs, and store 7x more discs than you would in DVDs.

For corporate, it is probably more due to tradition and conservatism that they use tape backups. Or perhaps they don't really plan to touch the tape backups ever again once they are created and perhaps don't really care if data is lost. Active RAID storage for pure backup purposes that are not likely to be used at all would simply incur more cost than off-line tape storage.
Iianm, currently there are no hybrid drives that have 30GB of NAND and 500GB in platters.
