just got into a spending spree for bettas.
Bought about 15 bettas in 3 week's time with some of them belonging to my gf. being a beginner , i find it very hard to understand all the specific terms that all the sifus are using and what are the difference. if someone would point me to a link for all the HMPK or list it down here with Images, that would be a great help ! btw, plakat and betta, what's the diff? Added on December 8, 2011, 9:10 pmalso the mask when you guys referring to a betta.. what does it mean ? This post has been edited by exkay: Dec 8 2011, 09:10 PM |

QUOTE(exkay @ Dec 8 2011, 09:09 PM) just got into a spending spree for bettas. When we say HM or HMPK we are refering to its tail typeBought about 15 bettas in 3 week's time with some of them belonging to my gf. being a beginner , i find it very hard to understand all the specific terms that all the sifus are using and what are the difference. if someone would point me to a link for all the HMPK or list it down here with Images, that would be a great help ! btw, plakat and betta, what's the diff? Added on December 8, 2011, 9:10 pmalso the mask when you guys referring to a betta.. what does it mean ? Betta Tail Type VT- Veiltail HM- Halfmoon (Longfin wif 180 degree D shaped caudal) PK/TPK - Plakat / Traditional Plakat (shortfins) HMPK - Halfmoon Plakat (Short fin with 180degree D shaped caudal) CT - Crowntail (Longfin with web reductions) KCT - King Crowntails CTPK - Crowntail Plakat (Shortfin with web reductions) OHM/OHMPK - Over Halfmoon/Halfmoon Plakat (Long/shortfin with over 180degree caudal spread) so far tis are the existing terms for show bettas tail type.. other sifu pls add on if i missed out any also, when we talk about the masking we are refering to the scale of the fish. Masking is a type of scaling that is very thick and u can see this type of scaling in Black Dragons, Red Dragons, Royal Blue.. tis type of scaling is different from normal betta scaling coz its like a plate of shiny armour that covers the fish body over time So, when we say the fish has Full Masking it means that the thick scale covers the whole of the betta body, especially the head part HEre is the comparison between a full mask and a non full mask Black Dragon HMPK (ps: photos belong to lee haur of bettafishmalaysia.blogspot.com) Non Full Mask HMPK ![]() Full Mask HMPK ![]() This post has been edited by daigoro1990: Dec 9 2011, 08:38 PM |

Salamander is a type of color.. show u an example
![]() tis is a good pic of a salamander(not mine btw). salamander has reddish base color on the body wif purplish coatings.. and they usually have white bandings around the dorsale, caudal and anal fins and yeah, ur fish fin will grow back.. but it will take time depending on how u care for the fish |

I also lose betta from not covering my tank..jump out from the tank and become "ham yu" actually Cicak very clever~ they use their tail as bait and when the fish get closer, they snap it Added on December 19, 2011, 9:06 am QUOTE(x'tine @ Dec 18 2011, 03:55 PM) OMG you put too much.. but I think it wont harm the fish la..the bottle got mention that overdosed does not harm the fish or nt?? lizard may be one of the cause. they use their tail as bait for the fish. like fishing. true story. hmmmm.. if i'm not mistaken, u can just leave the water overnight without any antichlorine also can. would be better if u can aerate using bubble.

hi everyone,
i need help ASAP (sorry lol) my situation, i got a community tank filled with: 1) 1 male lavender veiltail 2) 4 female cambodias (2 ready to spawn) 3) 1 female wildtype (ready to spawn) 4) 1 feather fin catfish 5) 2 chinese algae-eater ( <-- i know i make a wrong pick on this one) 6) A few RCS shrimps (my bettas seemed to ignore them and let them play on their body) and so, today, the 1 female cambodia decided to mate and spawn eggs with the male. the problem is, the male haven't make a nest yet, and when the spawning process happen, the male have to occasionally make the nest after picking the dropped eggs and continue the embracing posture. and sometimes, the other females decided to ruin the party and the couple ends up chasing the other females away. So i took the couple lovefish out and put into another tank, put the same tank water in it (height about more than one inch deep), put some plants to help them stick the eggs and making bubble nest easier. collect the remaining eggs from the previous tank and put them in. they continue doing it for 3 hours, but unfortunately, every time the male try to make bubbles, the bubble pops, is it because i used new clean water?(just did 30% WC yesterday) can the eggs hatch even without bubble nest? i heard about artificial hatching but in my case, the daddy betta is there and will he try to make the nest? how to help him do that since everytime he does that, the bubbles pop? the female seemed to be helping the male so i leave it. then i went out for an hour, went i return, the female hid herself from the male so i removed her into a quarantine tank. but her stomach is still bloated with eggs(everytime i took her out from the water, eggs keep spraying on my hand), so i put her back in the spawning tank but got chased by the male, so i removed her again, is it ok? she seemed too tired and got lots of injury. is my decision right or i should put back in the spawning tank? one more thing, how do i feed the male? should i feed him normally and removed uneaten pellets? do i need to do WC daily for the eggs? if so how much %? im not planning to use filter in the spawning tank but do i need to use water pump..to regulate the water flow a bit for the eggs to breath? thanx |

hey bro yewlin, still going strong eh?
btw guys and girls, just a reminder not to abuse the salt. the salt is good for killing bacteria and such but if you overuse it, you might develop salt resistant bacteria strain and that will make everyone suffer more. so, use salt sparingly and only when necessary. |

Unfortunately i cant see him anymore. when i almost gave up, suddenly saw his tail peeking through and i caught him by the tail... PHEW ! i was really scared, never clean it near the sink without the filter anymore... He was without water for almost 5 min... real tough fish

eggs got engulf by an entity like dandelion seeds..
waited for 3 days to ensure any surviving fries hatched, but none made it so have to throw them away since dont want to risk any infection on the male already quarantine both of the male and female for a week now. now female already moved back to her community tank and male already put back in his 3g bowl. |

Uh oh! Red streaked fins, lethargic fish. I have since removed the plant as the roots seem to be shedding a lot of "i'm not too sure what' and clouding the water.
Sounds like ammonia or ph poisoning? so aside from a water change is there anything i can do? TQ. |

is the trend moving to giant betta? seems like giant betta has limited color.
anyway is the giant one more pricey than the normal size one? other than the size, what's special in the giant compare with the normal one? just wondering. |

Maybe that's y she ganas towards ithow and what does the owner look for when getting a fancy type? all i see are dotted and random spots on the body and will they show their true colour when matured?..can help? EDIT* REPOST* _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ btw, anyone have any issues who always lepas geram at submersible thermometer? one of my female betta always tonjol her berried belly, butthead and libas at the thermometer lol... scared it will break, then merkuri poisoning pulak haduh~ |

dun bother wif tat instant brine shrimp thing, i have heard bad comments from betta breeders who actually used those kind of stuff and most of the time the fry wont even eat it. If u wanna feed non-live food for the first week i would recomend egg yolk, but u have to prepare it properly so tat u dun foul the water.
and for rm25 it is better to order the bbs eggs from other source such as betta4u.com. u can get alot of bbs eggs for tat much money and it can last u for quite awhile , the only hassle is that u need to hatch it by urself hahah @luQEE that place is owned by Daniel Heng, our BSM ( betta society malaysia) president btw do drop by at our monthly gathering (Betta Sunday) if u wanna learn more about bettas, can buy sell bettas too. if i were you, i bring the betta to UK.
my mates were like: bloody hell! nice killifish youve got there mon. and i was like: btw, if ure planning to get betta in UK, do get a heater, and makesure the tank is big...fishbowl or SU is not enuff. 5-10g tank should be fine. if cant afford heater, do the luuqee's poor man's way, connect housing heater rails into the water tank.. |

I bought my imbellis for RM1.50. Both jumped out of pot and bunuh diri already (after I gave them clean clear water). Sometimes I fed them mosquito larvae, they seemed to love them. But must monitor and make sure the larvae don't turn into mosquitoes lar when breeding them!

Vinegar eel you can get the culture from Kindai Betta a.k.a najib or C.way a.k.a Xi Wei....they both have it...and nice person to hang on... very informative person especially when it come to wildies and paros |

QUOTE(rawrrawr @ Mar 14 2012, 11:29 AM) 2 different variants, you're talking about black head vs masked oh. okay! thanks. low grade and high grade is not differentiated by that We differentiate by: - finage standards, individually and overall - color; for solid color we differentiate by the solidness/purity of the color; for marbles aka pattern we differentiate by patterns, intensity of color, contrast - form; the oomph of the fish when it flares, how long can he continue the flaring process - and many more btw guys. i get this from Bangi rm4.00 only , and they even dont know what is the species called. they wrote it IKAN LAGA "LION HEAD" RM4.00. ![]() ![]() 1 bungalow 1 terrace house ![]() My halfmoon in recovery due his tail damaged |

Hi there, i'm new here. I've just bought my betta last nite. The guy told me it's male as female seldom put on sale coz their tail not as pretty as male but when i check it out at home, i notice my betta is female (coz the label there written as halfmoon, female). Make me confused
Here's the pic of my betta in the bottle upon purchased and the tank i've prepared for her. Please advise if my tank setting up is correct as it's my 1st time having a betta fish. I've yet giving her the name.....still thinking |

Everything seems fine as he's swimming happily and his colour changed brighter blue. The next morning (Wed) i woke up and he's still fine. But when i reach home last nite, i saw his tail was torn. I'm so worried, is he sick? This morning he still very active as before just the tail is more torn than last nite. His tail is pretty 2 days before : But lastnite his tail become like this : This is where i placed him in my room : I need advices from all the sifus here......plsss |

my advice, do partial WC frequently and adding betta meds to speed the healing process.
i personally havent used any betta meds b4 cant give any specific answers regarding it. if all is well, fins will start regenerating within weeks time. my newb opinion on possibility of the tearing fins, correct me if im wrong: 1)fin rot - dirty water parameter due to rarely WC regime 2)external parasites - hook worms may hook on to fish gills and fins, and usually veiltype will nip off his infected tail to stop the source 3)environment unfriendly - too much decorations or unsuitable decorations may possibly trigger tail biting. my male betta start to nip his tail when i transffered him into heavily planted tank since they are nuisance and got tangle in the gorwth when chasing sorority females lol |

QUOTE(LuQEE @ Mar 22 2012, 10:34 AM) my advice, do partial WC frequently and adding betta meds to speed the healing process. I only put 1 plant in the tank, which i tot he can use as hiding place. Hmm maybe i should take it out from the tank. But with the tearing fins, will this risk his health too? Ok noted, i'll drop by pet shop and get the betta meds for Bluey. Thanks for the advices.i personally havent used any betta meds b4 cant give any specific answers regarding it. if all is well, fins will start regenerating within weeks time. my newb opinion on possibility of the tearing fins, correct me if im wrong: 1)fin rot - dirty water parameter due to rarely WC regime 2)external parasites - hook worms may hook on to fish gills and fins, and usually veiltype will nip off his infected tail to stop the source 3)environment unfriendly - too much decorations or unsuitable decorations may possibly trigger tail biting. my male betta start to nip his tail when i transffered him into heavily planted tank since they are nuisance and got tangle in the gorwth when chasing sorority females lol |

tried searching for daphnia or bbs in lfs near my place but to no avail
finally have to buy eggs from grocery store and make the egg yolk for them. is that sure that the fries will eat the egg yolk or they will be kind of picky sometimes? because can't really see whether they are eating the egg yolk or not.. p/s: my another young imbellis keep jumping out from the tank, end up stick to the wall of the tank few times. need me to sapu it back to the water. if i am not around, i think it properly will have to wait till it becomes dry fish then only can fall back to the water =.= |

1 week after hatched.
initially, 5fries been put into 1.5L contain daphnia. growth is much better than others. maybe because the food supply never end. Others i fed with bbs twice a week. Yesterday, i put another batch of fries into the daphnia container. half of it i put into my pond ouyside. hope they can survive from guppies.. and another half still in the spawning tank. will continue to monitor them closely. |

Will betta fish fight with opposite gender? I'm planning to get a female betta fish to breed with my male betta fish.
Added on April 8, 2012, 12:43 amoh yea, do I have to put my betta fish somewhere brighter? I put it in my room which is usually dark most of the time. This post has been edited by NicoRobinz: Apr 8 2012, 12:43 AM |

QUOTE(NicoRobinz @ Apr 8 2012, 12:40 AM) Will betta fish fight with opposite gender? I'm planning to get a female betta fish to breed with my male betta fish. The male won't really fight with the female. He will flare at her as he gets sexcited. You will see the male dance around and start to build the bubble nest. Added on April 8, 2012, 12:43 amoh yea, do I have to put my betta fish somewhere brighter? I put it in my room which is usually dark most of the time. bettas eat like pigs(sorry, no offense, but it is true in my point of view), i tend to feed them alot and about 5 times a day before,
but i dont recommend that, it will make ure betta fat, lazy and even can caused swim bladder disorder. 1 or 2 times a day is enough. i think yours is ok i guess. (plz correct me if im wrong here) |

The expensive bettas are mainly the quality selective bred ones with beautiful finnage, perfect colour rays and tail shapes. Suitable to be show bettas I suppose. |

QUOTE(edmund90 @ Apr 11 2012, 03:48 PM) Pity that. No idea why the cross-breed of all these show bettas are being sold at such a heavenly price. Bettas used to be really affordable for everyone. Back then I could get a fine betta at just 50 sen and it was pure breed. |

Define those RM7 ones, what are they? I'm quite curious to know the fin type and colour variation of them. It's an odd pricing though. The LFS I've been to mainly sells the bettas at RM2 or RM10. Were you referring to the RM7 ones or the RM40-50-70 ones that you like?i kinda like them. can we keep bettas with shrimp? Besides that, if you say shrimp and if I'm not mistaken that these shrimps are those RM1 for a pack to use as bait for fishing, then I wouldn't recommend to keep the bettas with them. I've once tried this in my female bettas tank and they've eaten all of the shrimps by the next day. Further, if those shrimps are the very pricey pet shrimps, i.e: cherry shrimp, crystal red shrimp; you should better not keep them with the bettas for what it may be almost the most expensive food for them. |

QUOTE(edmund90 @ Apr 11 2012, 08:23 PM) my suggestion to future hobbyist who wanted to breed, plz research and read and know wat u shud do b4 u act.. LOL at the 'free swimming'. What is free swimming? Layman's term, it means swimming freely without supervision, will float and won't drown. Haha! Easy ain't it?eg: food preparation, tank preparation, etc nowadays Most of the ppl only wan ppl to spoon feed thats y betta quality drop so much.. Anyway back to ur question, u can remove the father once the fries r free swimming.. what is free swimming? go search it urself.. and for ur information, some breeder keep the father with the fries until adult. every breeder has their own unique way to keep the fries.. Added on April 11, 2012, 8:25 pm haha.. my betta sapu all my ghost shrimp also.. even pleco they also can kill.. I do remove the male betta once the fries start to swim freely as a precaution of the fries being eaten up mistakenly as daphnias by their father. Unless I'm mistaken, the male betta could be kept with the fries until the fries become adult which I'm yet to experience. Indeed you were right on the pleco being attacked by the bettas. I had one pleco, double the size of the normal adult females (I keep some 10 to 15 female bettas in a huge porcelain jar - those known as 'salted eggs jar' which could store some huge amount of water), got pecked badly by the female bettas and suffered massive injuries and ended up as fatality. Poor thing! |

You must have been totally attracted by their finnage. Have fun!btw i like the pricey one. lol. |

It looks like some puffed up scales. In this case, just as Edmund has pointed out that unless if you know how to perform bladder operation, otherwise the betta is 99% KO. |

QUOTE(tlts @ Apr 13 2012, 04:22 PM) hi i am new to this topic Hello and welcome to the betta splendens thread!here is my bette just buy ![]() 1 day need to feed how many times...i use powder type food and seems like it hate light =( and any beginer tips for me >.<! thx in advance That looks like a lovely steel blue or perhaps royal blue veiltail male betta from the blurry photo. How much does it costs? If you're asking about how many times to feed daily, I would recommend not to feed too much instead of feed too little. I will feed my bettas once per day or when I feed them with live food like blood worms, I would diet them for a day or two after the feed. You wouldn't want to train your betta to keep eating and can't survive without food for a day or two or even more than that (if you plan to go for a trip for example). Regarding the hatred of light, bettas do live in a quiet and stagnant water in the wild and the question is, who likes to be kept under the glaring light? Try to give them some day and night feel just like how you live at home on a daily basis, unless you are a person who loves daylight 24/7. Beginner tips, not really I could think of any. Well, easy it is though. Here are a few of it which I believe will be useful for you: - Make your betta happy; give it some flaring exercise to keep them fit; keep it in a larger tank if you do have one; feed it with live food at times and it will show you its most beautiful colours. Happy keeping betta and have fun! |

LOL poor quality bbs may lead to poor hatch rate thus low amount of hatched bbs but a lot of unhatched eggs...anyway, this is how i feed my fries with bbs... step 1 : off the air pump and remove the air stone then wait for 20-30 minutes step 2 : use a torch light to point at a particular spot at the middle of the bottle (at least 5 minutes) so tat most of the bbs will gather at the light spot step 3 : use an air pump tube to suck at that point (minimum egg shell but maximum active bbs) into a small jar/coffee filter/daphnia net step 4 : rinse the bbs with freshwater step 5 : use a syringe to suck the bbs then "SHOOT" into the fries tank.. |
