dont know if this is the right place but i have a question..
anyone experienced excessive bass on HD channels with 5.1 surround sound? My unit is plugged to AV receiver directly thru HDMI. Coaxial connection is not connected. Is this a common problem? When in SD channels, the bass is just nice but when switch to HD channels, the bass gets super boomy..

QUOTE(AjkR06 @ Apr 27 2012, 12:12 PM)
All of the Astro channels are available for free viewing right now (including AOD and HD) except Astro First and Astro Box Office Sports... biggrin.gif

I straightly called astro just now to subscribe for HD service, and voila! All of the HD channels can be viewed... Even for ten days, but it's already enough for me who just paid RM50 [for basic family+PVR service] per month as a monthly subscription fees... laugh.gif

My post here is all about the HD service and HD channels, not about SD channels.

I think I should explain much more clearly on the HD Service (additional RM 20 per month) for people who are not clear or did not know that this service do not automatically include ALL HD channels and subject to which existing packages is subscribed.

Because Assteruk is so "proud" to be awarded with the "Pooteruk Awards" as the so-called "people's choice for the best of the best brand", Assteruk unlocked many of the SD and HD channels for all subscribers for 10 days, but it does NOT include ALL Astro First (SD & HD) and SOME ABO (Astro Box Office) SD channels. I just wonder how the panel of judges made their decision to give the Gold Award for Media & Entertainment to Assteruk ? Did these judges make any survey from Assteruk subscribers and are they so blind to any dissatisfaction from many subscribers ? Enough said. Therefore, starting from 27-04-2012, we can watch almost all the SD and HD channels for 10 days so, I do agree that at least this is a great "bonus" for many subscribers.

From what you mentioned... "RM50 [for basic family+PVR service] per month", its actually this amount below (Per Month)...

(1) For Byond (External "PVR Easi" 320 GB Harddisk provided free)
Basic (Family Pack) = RM 37.95
HD Service = RM 20
External Harddisk PVR Service = RM 5 (not RM 10)
Total = RM 62.95 *

(2) For Byond PVR (with internal 500 GB harddisk)
Basic (Family Pack) = RM 37.95
HD Service = RM 20
PVR Service = RM 10 (not RM 15)
Total = RM 67.95 *

* Not include 6% Govt Tax

EDIT : Thanks to AjkR06 for correcting my mistake on the PVR service monthly charge.

Refer to this link for actual monthly fee calculation... http://www.astro.com.my/mypackages/articles/art_5156.html

I believe you already knew that the total HD channels you can watch depends on what packages is subscribed.

If subscribed to Movies Pack, we can watch SD channels (Ch 411 HBO Asia, Ch 412 Max, Ch 413 Fox Movies Premium) and with subscription to HD service, we can also watch HD channels (Ch 431 HBO HD Asia, Ch 433 Fox Movies Premium HD and Ch 438 Sundance Channel HD). Eventhough subscribed to HD service, if we did NOT subscribe to Movies Pack, we cannot watch Ch 431, Ch 433 and Ch 438 HD channels!

When you subscribed to only the Basic (Family) Pack of RM 37.95, here are the SD channels that is included (inside spoilers)...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

What I see is that SD Ch 701 AXN (marked in red box) is included so can also watch HD Ch 721 AXN HD.

With subscription to HD service, such subscribers can watch HD channels that are NOT tied to any SD packs, and can only watch HD ones tied to SD pack when such packs are subscribed.

I believe that all HD service subscribers can watch these HD channels...
Ch 309 Celestial HD, Ch 393 One HD, Ch 706 LiTV/Food Network, Ch 720 beTV, Ch 726 FX HD and Ch 729 Kix HD
... because these HD channels are not "tied" to any packages.

That means, with your Basic (Family) Pack + HD service, you can only watch 7 HD channels which are...
Ch 309 Celestial HD, Ch 393 One HD, Ch 721 AXN HD, Ch 706 LiTV/Food Network, Ch 720 beTV, Ch 726 FX HD and Ch 729 Kix HD... by paying extra RM 20 per month!

EDIT : Thanks to agingamer for correcting my mistake on the total HD channels not tied to any packages.

Presently, there are a total of 18 HD channels, and another 3 Astro First HD channels. Astro First is Pay Per View so its not included and need to pay "extra" to watch a movie.

I did not subscribe to any SuperPacks or Sports Pack but the packs I subscribed allowed me to watch 14 HD channels. I cannot watch Ch 722 Star World HD and 3 HD channels in Sports Pack.

For me, pay extra RM 20 per month get to watch 14 HD channels.
For you, pay extra RM 20 per month get to watch 7 HD channels.

Because of this "special 10 days" which allowed all 18 HD channels (3 Astro First HD not included), if you are still not sure how many HD channels you can watch with only your Basic pack, you can phone to Astro Customer Support to ask. After the special 10 days, the total HD channels will return to only 7 for you.

Yes... maybe you already knew this when you subscribe to HD service. I do respect your personal opinion on whether its worth to pay the "extra" RM 20 to watch only 7 HD channels. Its up to you.

However, there may be some people who read your post and subscribed to HD service hastily without knowing whether its worth it to pay extra RM 20 per month because how many HD channels can be watched depends also on which "Packages" is subscribed.

Please don't misunderstand me because each person have the right to their own opinions on whether its worth it or not. What I am trying to advise is... for others not to rush into subscribing to HD service, to find out more and think carefully first before deciding. If not sure, call Astro Customer Support to ask how many HD channels can be watch with your existing subscribed packages.

One thing that I can be sure is that SuperPack 3 subscribers can watch all 18 HD channels. The 3 additional Astro First HD channels is separate PPV and have to pay to watch only selected movie (2 day period to watch).

An actual story (inside spoilers)...

Woah James! Thanks for your clear explanation! rclxms.gif Surely this type of post should be put at the front page of this thread, and it can be used as a guidance to those 'newbie' who intend to take/upgrade to Astro Byond service (regardless of PVR or only HD services). I truly respect your opinion btw.... And Yes, I already knew that the amount of HD channels that can be received by me is totally depending on what are my current subscription packages. So, like what you said before, definitely I'll only able to received 5 HD channels after those so called "bonus" day end eight days after. The main reason why I so keen to take HD services is due to take the full "advantages" of this ten days promo. With just RM20 (on top of my current subscription rate), I can enjoy almost all channels available on Astro. laugh.gif After the promo end, I'll surely take my phone, and inform Astro that I want to cancel the HD services for the sake of it's not worth to pay RM20/month just for 5 HD Channels. Thus, as I mentioned just now, the main reason that make me so itchy to take HD service is just to release the full potential of this 10 days promo. notworthy.gif

Anyway, there are some mistakes regarding the charges for the Easi-PVR and PVR services that you mentioned above ;

(1) For Byond (External "PVR Easi" 320 GB Harddisk provided free)
Basic (Family Pack) = RM 37.95
HD Service = RM 20
External Harddisk PVR Service = RM 5
Total = RM 62.95 *

(2) For Byond PVR (with internal 500 GB harddisk)
Basic (Family Pack) = RM 37.95
HD Service = RM 20
PVR Service = RM 10
Total = RM 67.95 *

For Easi-PVR service, there's additional RM5/month while for Byond PVR service (like what I've owned now), the additional amount of RM10 is required. Not RM10 and RM15 as you mentioned before.

Small correction...

With your Basic (Family) Pack + HD service, you can get to watch 7 HD channels which are...
Ch 309 Celestial HD (added recently)
Ch 393 One HD,
Ch 706 LiTV/Food Network,
Ch 720 beTV (used to be AXN Beyond)

Ch 721 AXN HD,
Ch 726 FX HD
Ch 729 Kix HD (added recently)

Also, I think it's more worthwhile if u add Education Pack (RM5 extra) and get additional 3 HD channels
Ch 571 Discovery HD
Ch 573 NatGeo HD
Ch 575 History HD

My 2 cents...

Thanks for your feedback and kind words! Will also edit my previous post to correct the "PVR Service monthly fee" mistakes. I used this link..."http://www.astro.com.my/mypackages/articles/art_5156.html"... to find out the price by ticking on "Personal Video Recorder Service" and "External Hard Drive PVR Service" by comparing the difference so it seems the indicated price is not correct.

There will be confusion for some people when we mentioned about the "PVR" which means "Personal Video Recording/Recorder" so I am posting the picture below to show the difference...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

As shown, both the Byond box and Byond PVR box can be used as PVR but the difference is the harddisk used for recording.

The Byond box use an external 320GB harddisk for recording. Previously, Astro recommended the WD My Passport AV 320GB (2.5 inch) USB2.0 external harddisk to connect by USB to the Byond box but it seems that this harddisk is no longer available now. Therefore Astro have now relaunched the PVR EASi box for the Byond box. I have previously posted the PVR EASi internal picture which is actually a WD 320GB (2.5 inch) harddisk put inside a fancy casing. Reposting the PVR EASi internals here...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

The Byond PVR box already have an internal 500GB (3.5 inch) harddisk so it does NOT require the PVR EASi.

For the Byond box, the Astro recommended WD My Passport AV is not available now, the PVR EASi is required.

I phoned to Astro Customer Support to recheck on the the PVR EASi and found out that I made a mistake.

The PVR EASi box is NOT free and we have to pay RM 80 (one time charge) to get it ! Actually its not expensive if we compare it to other external 2.5 inch 320 GB harddisk especially when harddisk prices have increased a lot due to last year's floods in Thailand. Also, many PC sellers only have minimum 500 GB stocks now.

Ok, back to the PVR service topic. Here is the corrected info...
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Getting the PVR EASi is also optional if we already have earlier purchased the WD My Passport AV 320GB harddisk. I have earlier purchased 2 WD My Passport for RM 230 each in 2010 which I used for other storage purposes. So I can choose not to "buy" the PVR EASi. Eventhough Assteruk recommended whatever harddisk types to use, I have not tried on other 320GB external harddisk brands so these may or may not work. I did not subscribe to the PVR service so I don't have the opportunity to test.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I repeat... for PVR service... ONLY the Byond box need to connect an external harddisk (USB2.0) recommended by Assteruk... PVR EASi box or the WD My Passport AV 320GB harddisk (not available now)

Actually when I compare the price I bought my WD My Passport at RM 230 with PVR EASi at RM 80... mmm... wth current harddisk prices, I think we already know the answer whether its worth it or not to get the PVR EASi !

I was also told by Astro support person that there is no contract for subscribing to PVR Service so we can cancel this any time BUT there may be the ridiculous RM 10 service charge for downgrading of selected Assteruk packages and services.

That means for you, it may not be just paying RM 20 for 1 month HD Service by cancelling before the 2nd month. It may be RM 20 (HD Service) + RM 10 (Service Charge) = RM 30 just to enjoy the 10 days "free" viewing of "all" the HD channels.

I hope I have cleared any confusion about the "PVR" acronym used on the Byond and Byond PVR boxes.

I am repeating my advice here for people who may not know anything about subscribing to the HD Service... please check carefully first, properly understand it and then decide whether its worth it to subscribe to HD service for short term or for long term ! Just don't simply jump into it and regret later.

In my personal opinion, I suspect the 10 days "free" view of 130 channels as "reward" for being "awarded the people's brand choice" maybe just a cover to hide a very very very clever TRICK that Assteruk is playing to trap subscribers who did not check clearly first before signing in to the HD Service. Only my "unfair" opinion but think about it !

Remove all setting for schedule recording to make sure NO future schedule recording is set. Then try switch off your Byond (not standby), wait a few minutes, then switch on again. When it reboots, don't touch anything and wait until the clock is shown (with the correct time) on the Byond panel. If your Byond time still shows 00:00 after a very long time, then something is wrong... call Astro Customer Support.

A funny thing happened to my Byond box on the day the 130 "free" channels started (about 1 am on 27-04-12). I do not have PVR service. I was watching Ch 571 Discovery HD World and when I pressed the [OK] button on my remote to show the channel info, the info shown was Ch 101 TV1 !! ALL the different channels I changed always show Ch 101 !! What happened... is my Byond box spoilt ? Then I completely switched off power to my Byond (not standby), waited about 10 minutes and switched on again... waited for it to reboot until the time is displayed in standby... wow... everything go back to normal. Mmm... don't know if it will help but you can try it, will not damage your Byond but make sure all schedule recording is off first.

If this "reboot" method still do not solve your problem, then call Astro Customer Support for help and to check that your PVR function is not accidentally deactivated because of this 10 day "free" 130 channels.

I have switch off 2 times and waited more than one hour already, the problem is still there.

The clock is still normal and don't show 00:00.

My scheduled recording are all removed automatically after the 100 free channels and I cannot remove it manually.

So there is nothing to record and I cannot record.

I think this is to prevent people from recording the 100 free channels and distributing them. eg. Astro on demand, astro first etc.

So I need confirmation from other subscribers.

Their customer service sucks, I tried to call them but cannot get through many times.

This is clearly customer service mistake or their system problem. They have remove PVR entitlement on your smartcard. Ask them to restore back and ask for waiver.

Seriously I missed the moments with my 'beloved' Astro Max....
Even though it can be considered as one of the crappy project launched by Astro, with the ugly GUI, constant freeze, bulky 'silverish' looking machine, confusing button arrangement remote control, but you can always record any shows that you want, and some more, still can be watch again and again even you already unsubscribed for that channel. Custom recording also allowed, you can set the recording time solely on your own discretion and custom title also allowed... With Astro Max, there's no any smart card bound to the decoder. User are freely to change the smartcard... Nah, the main important thing is there's no service fees imposed to the astro Max user.... sad.gif

Feeling a bit regret right now for surrendered my old Astro Max.... But hey, some time we need to transform our self, isn't it.... laugh.gif
