Hiding SSID is the best method for me.
Offcourse the best method is to only allow MAC address that is approved to access the WiFi network. However, this method is a lot more complicated then hiding the SSID.

I've been using Streamyx for 5 years before I move to UNiFi for almost a year now.
And I've never put any encryption on my WiFi and the WiFi SSiD is still the same for this 6 years.

I just hid my SSID then when any of my friends or relatives came over to my house and wanted to access my WiFi, I just have to tell them my SSID, that's all.

Believe it or not, through all this 6 years the only devices that connected to my WiFi is the devices that belongs to me, my friends & my relatives.
This is why I pick hidden SSID without encryption. Without encryption, I don't have to remember the password and the WiFi is still working at the speed of Wireless N. biggrin.gif

Hi man I think they can scan and pick your network, then hijack the MAC.
Encryption is best protection.
Maybe you've been lucky because it just happens that no script kiddies live near you. I would secure my network if I were you. Without encryption all your passwords/stuff are open in the air.

Yes, I know I've been lucky all these past years. Thank you for your suggestion. smile.gif

However I still have the ability to block their MAC address should if they were succesful in accessing my network.
I always check my router to see if there's an unknown MAC address accessing my network.

I'm still happy with my choice. smile.gif

They can steal your MAC address and pretend to be YOU. Then you are the one locked out.

Its up to you man. But if I was on a network and sharing with my friend/family I would sacrifice a little speed gain in favor of tighter security.

The people in your wifes company with the degrees, how much is their pay? I think all people would install routers or even clean schools if the pay is right. smile.gif

Fairly high, 5k+ at least.

Do you know that all you need is NetStumbler to discover nearby hidden SSIDs? Or WifiFofum on an iPhone.

That's bad. What area is this? Mine is OK in Sg Long, Kajang.

The last few days, speeds were down intermittently especially during 12a-3a timeframe.

LOL, I guess they are not trained in WinXP. Best thing to say when you dunno something? "Cannot be done"

The 2 young techs who came for my UniFi install were quite ok though. Even talk about bittorrent and downloading warez and movies. Even use my Mac to setup the BTU and router. I still remember a few years ago when TM techs will all freeze up when they see or hear a Mac.

Added on January 10, 2012, 1:30 pm
Don't be surprised that some of the UniFi installers are degree holders. Though not necessarily in CS. On a side note, all the techs at my wife's company are degree holders, CS & Eng, and they do go around installing routers too.
*
Degree is overkill but it does cut cost for a company if those degree holders got nothing else to do.
Btw, what's CS and Eng? Computer Science & Engineering?

MAC Address can still be hijacked if they connected to your wifi. It's not hard to change a MAC Address

Locked out? Just do hardreset =) That's what the hacker can't control. Anyway, I'm using WPA with AES or PSK. Forgot xD Not in KL for the time being...

Btw, except the physical thing (drilling etc). Most of the setup can be done by people with certain knowledge to network configuration. Even certificate is a bit overkill blush.gif

sometimes they might even call u last minute. A few of my customers had that experience.
Today had a customer of mine, suppose to install at 2.30pm, installer just turned up. Sometimes the earlier installation could delay them.
