Another noob question: Can flash custom ROM (SuperROM) from internal storage instead of external sd card?
*
i think can, cause in cwm u are able to reach that directory but im not too sure abt this. Best practice is to have the rom on the internal memory i think....

Hi! Firstly thanks for your reply first. I'll read through that guide you have linked me before I do anything. I really don't wanna ruin the new phone. There are some things I would want to ask though if you don't mind me asking noob/unintelligent questions;

1. What is the difference between the KJ2 and the KL3? Is KL3 a successor to the KL3?
2. What is a rooted kernel?
3. After flashing with a rooted kernel, does it mean that I have to use a custom ROM?
4. By rooting the device, can I actually do updating to ICS say using the Singapore released ICS or for that matter any other country's release of the ICS update?
*
Hey, no problem. I'm still a learner as well. it's just that i've successfully rooted my phone with that guide. just offering some help here smile.gif

1. yes, KL3 is a firmware, successor of KJ2. Something like version 2 and version 3. So far, KL3 is the latest firmware for msian sgs2 phone.
2. err, don't know the technical explanation but something like kernel is the main piece of software to run your phone/firmware. When u root a phone, u will root or modify your kernel, so u can install different OS or ROM or firmware. Like in the first method of rooting, that doomlord's method will root your kernel. But it doesnt work for most latest firmware, like kj3. I was on kl2, and it didn't work on mine, with the first method. So, i have to follow the second method, downloaded a rooted kernel (rooted by someone else), and replaced it with my stock kernel on my phone. After that, my phone will be so called rooted. Then you will have to install certain apps, as described on that manual, like superuser, etc.
3. After rooting your phone, u can choose to use back your existing firmware or you can flash a custom ROM. i use back my existing KL3 firmware. The reason i rooted my phone is to have freedom on accessing my files in my phone. I can backup data for some apps, which non-rooted phone can't do.
4/ yes, u have to download the ROM and flash it into your phone, just like how u will do it with the custom rom. You can either use odin on pc or mobile odin, app on your phone.

my 2 cents smile.gif
Correct me if i'm wrong tongue.gif

thanks for reply. Can u show the procedures how to do so? I stuck at CWM's option "Choose zip from sdcard" (following creezalird's guide) where I can't found any SuperROM3.0.zip file listed (copy to internal storage & not in any sub-folder) icon_question.gif

Yet another question (sorry I'm noob sweat.gif )
Can I flash to another rooted kernel such from lucifr to superatmos in future? The rooting method still same as described in creezalird's guide? Needed clean any caches, scripts etc before flashing? rclxub.gif

Thanks man. I'll really need to understand the guide you link me first and then I will try it out. I am hoping it will be successful.

If something goes wrong what should I do? A hard factory reset helps? I read something on IMEI back up. Should I do an IMEI backup before rooting the kernel? All other data on the phone should be backed up first before doing any form of flashing right?

If u follow the instruction explicitly, u won't go wrong smile.gif

if something goes wrong, the worst i encountered was that my phone could not start, an image of the phone connects to computer was displayed. nothing works. I downloaded the wrong kernal. i9100 is not the same as i9100G .. my phone is i9100G. that time i was new.. very new tongue.gif .. Then, i downloaded the kl3 firmware from sam mobiles, connect my phone to pc and execute that file, within few minutes, my phone went back to original factory settings*.

rooting won't clear the data on your phone, but backup anyway, just in case something goes wrong. Not sure what is imei backup, i didn't do it.

Alright thanks a bunch man! biggrin.gif

I just flashed to the rooted kernel of Superatmos. Did the current ROM back up also. So.. Am I really done now? Do I still need to wipe data/factory reset in CWM recovery mode?

Added on May 7, 2012, 4:07 pmI think I just flashed to the Superatmos kernel. Any way to verify that I really did???

Also I noted from Superatmos Kernel V3.3 page on XDA, it says for v3.3 just copy the zip file and flash from CWM. Does it mean that I just copy without unpacking it? I tried just now to reboot in CWM and I what should I do from there?

Hi i was in the daze just like you too earlier. If you refer to a reply from superkingkong to me, he gave a link which has a guide to rooting the i9100G. I used that guide and did just what like he said, do a rooted kernel flash.

I just have one question in mind though, how do i check if i flashed to a rooted kernel? Is it supposed to show in the details of the kernel?

Added on May 7, 2012, 8:10 pmUpdate:

I decided to re-flash to Lucifr's kernel. Hopefully it's good. biggrin.gif

once you see superuser icon in the app list, you are rooted.

I followed the guide completely and from CWM I see my current kernel now as Lucifr 1.52uv

Erm... I actually downloaded the superuser app from the market and I have superuser access for ktool, CWM, Titanium backup and voltage control.

So does it means that I am rooted or I am not rooted yet?
Do I need to use the SuperOneClick to root my phone if I am not rooted yet?

if u can use/see superuser icon, that means your phone has been rooted. plus, if u can use ktools, etc, then u should be rooted. Another method for confirmation, if u launch terminal emulator app, you will get a blue screen with a $ prompt. Type "su" (without the quote". You should get a # prompt. That means you are rooted. If you don't get a # prompt, then you are not rooted.

Hope this helps smile.gif

I have rooted my phone after checking with the emulator.

I've been looking at custom roms, I see that for instance the GalaxyROM requires deodexed stock roms. How do I know if my stock ROM is deodexed or odexed for that matter?

I'd really appreciate if someone can guide me on flashing to GalaxyROM. I have read the guide about flashing custom firmware (which I've assumed correctly it is custom firmware). I have a ROM manager, how should I use it to flash a custom ROM?

From what I have read on the xda forum, after rooting, you can play around with the i/o and the cpu governors if you wanna boost battery life. Try installing apps like Battery Saver and Voltage Control. I hope it helps.

I decided to flash back to stock kernel. It seems like there are some problems for my phone to run on the custom kernel. I don't know if the kernel is the one which is messing the phone like hang issues on the home screen/menu/when texting and also the camera.

How does your phone behaves after rooting?

That's great to hear! I just unrooted and flashed back to stock kernel and see if my phone behaves fine. Will probably try for a week on stock and if everything goes well I think I will flash another kernel.

I find the battery saver app kinda useful. You can try it out and also you should download the voltage control app.

I saw in S2, non-G forum, someone mentioned they have upgraded to ICS via Samsung authorized centre, is that true? If it is, can we do the same for G version?

it is very easy, just full wipe and flash back to stock using odin.

for rooting method, u can follow my pdf guide in my signature, basically two routes, one will void warranty and needs usb jig to fix. and another will not void warranty but the steps are a bit lengthy (doomlord method)
