Any civil engineer working in Australia here? Need some advice about which field offers a better chance of employment in Aussie? Structural or geotechnical. Have two options currently, either work as geotech engineer with the MRT project or structural engineer for industrial real estate across the causeway.. Planning to do my postgrad study there after gaining some work exposure.

If you're heading Oz, i suggest you should heading to geotechnical. O&G is another option too. Pay is better
There's some saturation in structural for real estate.

On my personal experience, my Chinese name is a hard one to pronounce. However I do have an English name since secondary school. So casually I go by my English name and official documents used my Chinese name.

For my case, it did help in my work because my counterparts can remember my name better.

Hi guys, I am planning of getting advanced study at aus in two years time.
Is aus allow postgraduate students working while studying? Living expenses would be a concern to me if I stop working.

Hello seniors,

Some help needed, please if anyone could give a rough guide as to what is taxed and deducted from salary, other than income tax (29%), over in Australia?

Searched the web but getting more confused, the only other two things would be super and medical insurance (If covered then no deduction)?

Thank you very much!

u have to ensure your package either is including super or plus super

For eg, $100k including super(9%), means ur salary is 91% of $100k, then u need to minus tax to get the nett income ($100k - 9% - income tax)
If its $100k plus super, then u just deduct income tax from $100k to get the nett..($100k - income tax)

Private insurance, u have to pay on your own, but some company do cover that as well..

the medicare in the calculation, is medicare levy (1%) of ur salary if u earn $100k above, i think...cant remember the figure..(and that will only be calculated when u declare your income tax every year) it wont be deducted from your salary..

only super and tax will be deducted from your salary..

So I've lodged the 457 visa and so did my sponsor in oz, through the immigration's e-visa.

I have a secondary applicant whom I listed as my De facto partner. (She's my fiancée), not married, thus no marriage certificate.

The e-visa system did not ask me to attach any certificate at all, though I've heard from others that sometimes the immi peeps will give tend to give us a hard time by requesting proof of De facto relationship.

Should I just go and get registered to save myself from all the hassle?

Please advise.

Dear All,
Finally got my visa today. Really excited about this but also worries me the job seeking process. All the while never unemployed before and now have to compete internationally to get a job. Wish me luck on this.

Yeah, I think the biggest hurdle is coming now, JOB HUNTING! Felt like need to equip everything to jump into a pool for survival...haha.
I've been to sydney, melbourne & brisbane (these 3 cities contribute most job, i know)
However, will try perth. nearer to home, as my wife never stay overseas before.
Planning 1st entry april (whole family)
2nd entry will be july (need to resign & serve 2 mth notice)

Yeah, faced loads of challenges rclxub.gif but still we jump over it. smile.gif
actually the process should be faster but delayed a bit for 4 months coz wife pregnant cannot provide health check.
We applied on 15/5/2012, visa approved 24/1/2013.

Other than distance, is there any other reason for you to choose Perth?

I think based on my personal experience and perception, i'm pretty tired with city life especially in KL. I've enough with the hectic work and traffic.
Perth i think is just nice as got everything and city is not too big & not too small. i'm from a small kampung too.
We just want a simple life and do what ever things i want to do.
PErth is an ideal place for raising family. Been to other cities before but i still have perception perth is the right place.

not sure about perth but cost of living there is slightly lower than melbourne an sydney but still going up(from last 2 days newspaper)

i would say melbourne or brisbane should be fine for you. not busy like kl and very relaxing in suburb

Brisbane was in my list but not melbourne. too many people, housing price is skyrocketing.
I'm in a planning to buy house there budgeting below AUD350K. Hopefully can get 1
