Update =P .

Hedgie mom at the pet shop i working at , gave her her first bite of mealworm.

She didnt want.

Cut the mealworm into half , and then gave it to her.

She licked it , and annointed herself. ( verryyy longgg )

So cute <3

Hedgies tend to get very aggressive during their quilling period. Quills also seem to drop by the masses. Therefore, stop worrying. smile.gif
Hedgies will normally return to their normal non-aggressive behaviour once the period is over. Once, I found more than twenty fallen quills at once.

Continue handling your hedgie as usual even though they're a bit more aggressive nowadays.
Yay! Glad to hear that the mum & baby's alright!
Only one baby though?

I would suggest waiting till 2 weeks old before you handle the baby.
However, if the mother is not too protective and aggressive when you put your hand near her, you can handle the baby at 1 week old.
NO LESS THAN 1 WEEK or chances of the baby getting eaten is very high.

Also, rub your hands in the bedding before you pick up the baby.
I used wood shavings back when Chubster had her babies so I used to pick up a handful of wood shavings and cover my scent with the smell of wood. smile.gif
This is one of the precautions to take when handling the baby.
*
Yeah. I was surprised that its only one baby too.
I better not handle the baby yet. Because we use vegetal litter so there is no wood chips to hold.
I think i'll just monitor the baby and touch it when its 2 and a half weeks xD.

How old before u can separate the baby from its mom?

Yesterday the mom and the baby was so far apart. I bring the mom near the baby only she milk it -.- or else she wont!

I think the mother hedgie will learn to like mealworms. biggrin.gif
I must thank you for taking such good care of the pets in the pet store because I think many store owners don't know what certain pets eat and what they don't. biggrin.gif

You can wean the baby at 7-8 weeks of age.
I didn't seperate the babies from the mother up until about 10 weeks because they were still sticking close to their mother and it was just so cute how all the babies would crawl towards the mother, just to sleep next to her. xD

Then, when the male babies started getting horny around their mother, I seperated them. smile.gif
One thing that a lot of people don't understand and are surprised when I tell them is that hedgehogs don't recognise their family members, so inbreeding could happen accidentally.

7-8 weeks old is definitely the best time to seperate them though because there's a chance of the baby impregnating the mother if it is a male when it's more than 6 weeks old.

If the baby is female, you wean the baby and put it in a seperate cage. After a week or so (we must let momma hedgie rest after all), you can try and put the baby into the cage with the mother again if they don't fight. smile.gif
Some female hedgies can live together.

Sounds to me like the hedgehog isn't a very good mother. Good thing she feeds the baby though! biggrin.gif
Does she huff at you when you approach the cage?
Chubby used to huff at me whenever I approach her babies. Always had to lure her out of the hiding place with the promise of mealworms.
Keep me updated! biggrin.gif

Seems like a pointless question to ask here because an abnormal growth would probably mean it's a tumour or something. Hedgehogs are rather prone to cancer.

I wonder why people fail to do research before buying their pets. Tsk tsk.

If you have the funds to bring the hedgie to the vet, do so immediately.

It's not the Persian one. It's the 'Fit' one.

RC36 (Kitten) is recommended for hedgies 6 months & below since it's higher in fat, which is good for growing hedgies.
RC32 (Adult Fit) is more suitable for those 6 months & above due to its' lower fat content.

If you have a fat hedgehog that's still below 6 months (which I do), RC32 would be the better choice.

Erm.. Can you List The Home Breeders. I Quite Interested With Hedgies...

But I Cannot Find Any Pet Store, Who are Taking Care Of The Hedgies Properly.. Recently I Found A Pet Store Who Kept 6 Hedgies in Small Fish Aquarium... God..

So I Try To Find Home Breeders As Alternative... Because They Breed Hedgies With Compassion...

i used to feed my hedgehog, a female 5 months old, with one brand of food which i forgot the brandname. now i feed it with prodiet cat food and royal canin(forgot which rc already). it tends to favor rc more but it attracts ants to it, yet the first one doesnt have this kind of problem.

plus what bedding do you guys use? i tried recycled paper, clumps the poo well and absorbs the pee well. now i switch to yoga mat for lower cost but the mat too absorbs the pee and smells. any other alternatives? wood shaving is a no-no, too smelly once soaked with urine
