The most common type of hedgehog that is kept as a pet is the African Pygmy Hedgehog. You may hear this type of hedgehog referred to as many other names, which stands to reason, since the African Pygmy Hedgehog is actually what is known as a hybrid-a mix of other breeds of hedgehogs, such as the four toed hedgehog or the white-bellied hedgehog.

Hedgehog come in different colours , Such as...

FAQ

Q: What should I do if I found some mites on my hedgehog?
A: Follow the steps below:
1. Buy Frontline Spray from petshops or vets.
2. Disinfect the toys and cage/container with detergent.
3. Use newspaper as the bedding and only put the food and water dish inside the cage/container.
4. Spray your hedgehog thoroughly with Frontline and avoid the face area.
5. Leave the hedgehog back in its cage/container for 3 to 4 hours and bath it after the duration so that it'll be free from Frontline.
6. Repeat Step 4 3 days later to make sure that the hedgehog is free from mites.
7. Usually the quarantine last for 7 days, remember to change the newspaper everyday. If you still find mites on the hedgehog after the quarantine period, repeat Step 4.
8. Find out the source of the mites if possible.

Q: Can hedgehogs travel? Will they get carsick?
A: Hedgehog dislikes traveling. It'll stress them out, and they might vomit or give watery poo, sometimes even weight loss. Leave your hedgehog alone if such problems occur. Let them settle down and rest first, so try to reduce the amount of traveling for hedgehogs. When traveling, use small, cozy and dark tank or container like shoebox with holes poked for air ventilation. Put thick clothes or woodshavings inside the container to make your hedgehog as comfortable as possible.

Q: Can I put 2 or more hedgehogs together?
A: No! Hedgehogs are solitary animals, meaning they love to be left alone than having companion.

Q: But I see my/my brother's/my sister's/my mother's/my father's/my grandfather's/my great grandfather's hedgehogs look fine living in group.
A: Unlike human, hedgehogs do not love companion, they don't cherish the friendship and it'll make them uncomfortable and even stress if put together. Please seperate them.

Q: But I see they didn't fight oso?
A: NO POK! NO POK!! NO POK IN RK HOUSE!!!! YOU WANT ME TO CALL THE POLICE IZZIT??? Are you blind, don't understand English or retarded? Want me to tell you how many time it's against their nature???

Q: How you know it's against the nature?
A: You have to die to know the answer.

Q: Why?
A: So you can ask God lah!

Suggested food to be fed to hedgehog

Royal Canin
This food has 38% protein and 9.5% fat. Hedgehogs love it, and it is one of the best foods for them. This food can be bought in 400 gram pack in most pet shop for about Rm 14 ~ Rm19 depending on the number.

Usually people feed them RC36 or RC32. The price range for these are,,

RC36 400g RM18+-
RC32 400g RM 14+-

IAMS Cat food 200g RM7

You can mix IAMS and RC36 together if you are short of money. It cuts your expenses.

Because hedgehogs are insectivores, they consistently need to have insects as a part of their diet. The most common insects are mealworms and crickets. Silkworms are also a common treat. Superworms aren't a good idea because they have teeth. They can easily hurt a hedgehog by biting its mouth or even stomach. Insects can be fed live, dead, freeze dried, or whatever other way you can think of. Live ones are better for the hedgehog, but some hedgehogs will only eat dead. For an adult hedgehog, 2-3 mealworms every few days is enough. For young hedgehogs, 1 every 4 days or so is plenty. The same applies with crickets. I would suggest getting the small ones (weather you get live or dead) as they are easier to eat for the hedgehog.

What other things can hedgehogs eat? Hedgehogs can eat a variety of human foods. If you aren't sure if a food is safe, don't give it. Some acceptable treats are cooked peas, cooked carrots, cooked squash, cooked sweet potato, (make sure that all of the following meats are UNSEASONED) chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, pork, salmon, tuna, banana, cranberries, grape pieces, kiwi, watermelon, pear, apple slices, strawberry, hard boiled eggs, baby food, cottage cheese, yogurt.
Never feed your hedgehog chocolate, caffine, nuts, seeds, onions, raisins, If your hedgehog won't eat mealworms, there are three things you can do-

1. Wait. Sometimes hedgehogs won't eat something one day and the next day it's the best food ever.
2. Warning: This may sound gross. You can cut or break the mealworm in half, then rub it on the hedgehog's lips. This will give it a taste of the mealworm. Sometimes hedgehogs simply don't eat mealworms because they don't know they can.
3. Give up. Some hedgehogs just don't like mealworms!

Won't Eat Crickets:
If your hedgehog won't eat crickets there are four things you can do-
1. Wait. Sometimes hedgehogs won't eat something one day and the next day it's the best food ever.
2. There are two ways to do this. Either break the cricket's legs off and give it to your hog (if it can't hop away, your hedgehog might eat it) or freeze it for a little bit. When you take it out and let it dethaw, its legs will break off by themselves. Then give it to your hog.
3. Warning: This may sound gross. You can cut or break the crickets inhalf, then rub it on the hedgehog's lips. This will give it a taste of the cricket. Sometimes hedgehogs simply don't eat crickets because they don't know they can.
Any type of nut, along with raisins, can get stuck in the roof of a hedgehog's mouth.

Its hard and take up lots of times and even worst sometimes they even grow ants everywhere so its better to buy..
Btw you guys feed hedgehogs with superworm??
I tot its not recommended??

Veryy long. And they so smelly too. Just now i checked the box, one died and soooo smelly. Flies went inside. No idea how it can enter the box =.=!

Can feed 1 , but coz its big and alot protein. I give mine 1~2 A day. Reason i bought is because female hamster is pregnant, want to give her high protein stuff ~

And superworm very expensive.. i buy Rm3 like so little onlyy.

My hibari, cleaned her cage just now. Left her on the floor like 2 minutes and... 6 sticky and smelly poop on the floor ew!! Had to bath her after.

Well my parents went to china and i am at my mom's friend house . I put 2 days worth of cat food , coz i go back to my apartment every 2 days for tuition.

I dont think you should bring your hedgie around in the car too much. I brought mine to the house im currently staying in right now and she has.. carsick. vomit alot! So i ended up putting her back home to my apartment( coz many ants in this house! )

Where do you stay if i might ask?

its okay smile.gif. Lol. if i have stayed at my grandma house at kajang i would take care of it for you. But i'm in kl x).

Well , i heard that putting hedgie in cars for transport could stress out ur hedgie . So dont put it in for long hours. 3 hours is really long.. its like.. almost johor/going to johor!
For transport , i put mine like.. 10 mins only. then try to calm her down.. and clean my hedgie vomit lol.

RC36 and RC32 is different because...

1. The size of the kibbles. RC32 kibbles are larger.

You mean RC36 is SMALLER, right?  tongue.gif

Hedgehogs that are 1 years old & above eat RC32.
RC36 is meant for hedgehogs below 1 years old as it contains a higher percentage of fat than RC32.

Again, leaving a hedgie unattended for more than 3 days is not recommended.
However, if you really have no choice, make sure you put a LOT of water (make sure it won't tip over/get pooped or peed on) & plenty of kibble.
