QUOTE(gaianeo @ Jan 5 2012, 08:48 AM) maybe you should read the dettol instruction carefully.. dettol are not suitable for direct usage and better to apply when mix with water. for hedgehog are using very small amount of dettol in their bath water and it work perfectly and no injury have occur. frontline was a very good mite control medicine but origin for fury animal like cat and dog. hedgehog are less fur and small compare to these big fury cat and dog.. and you sure frontine are not too strong for hedgehog? have you try spray frontline to your skin and see what will happen since you try the dettol on your hand already. besides, frontline are rather expensive and some forumer re not recommend using it due to its strong and expensive issues.. not saying it cant be apply but dettol are a good replacement for it.. no hard feeling.. just wanna clarify stuff. and one of the pet lover center people saying am i crazy for getting frontline for hedgehog. as a matter of fact i did. and it was recommended by a few vets that are known locally to treat hedghehogs. no hard feelings, but i would rather listen to a qualified vet rather than a pet store clerk. of course regardless of what you read and are told common sense would deduce that using such chemicals on such a sensitive animal is risky as is. which is why i clearly stated the natural option, which is using apple cider vinegar.i myself do so and a few other fellow caretakers have followed my doing so with similar results. |

I use shampoo. Honestly, I couldn't find any shampoos designated for hedgies so I bought a shampoo that is made for kittens and puppies. I did check through the ingredients to see if they could be potentially harmful to hedgehogs before buying.
Apple cider vinegar sounds like a safe way to go though! If my hedgies had mites, I'd probably give them baths with a shampoo (Johnson's baby shampoo is widely recommended by other owners) every two days or so. Then, drop a few drops of oil on their back to prevent dry skin and some Vaseline on and behind their ears. Like I said earlier, my hedgies no longer experience dry skin and tattered ears. I never detected any mites on them but they seemed to scratch a lot so maybe it was a really mild case. Good luck in curing the mite problem! Like Olivur mentioned, remember to clean EVERYTHING. Avoid wood shavings because this could case a repeat of the mite problem. This post has been edited by TeliLeti: Jan 7 2012, 12:21 AM |

Is the mother seperated from other hedgies & given privacy?
Leave the mother and baby alone but if the mother is ignoring the hoglet, you might have to handfeed. Success rate- minimal, sadly. Let me know how the hoglet fares! |

my hedgie is in quilling process as well, i noticed there is small tiny quill around her cage and all of them have little ball in the end. And also new quill poking out from her skin, that must be very painful.

Quills also seem to drop by the masses. Therefore, stop worrying. Hedgies will normally return to their normal non-aggressive behaviour once the period is over. Once, I found more than twenty fallen quills at once. Continue handling your hedgie as usual even though they're a bit more aggressive nowadays. QUOTE(ix3Rukia @ Jan 10 2012, 10:19 PM) Mother finally started to take care of baby hedgie Yay! Glad to hear that the mum & baby's alright! What age shud the baby hedgie be then i only can touch it? Only one baby though? I would suggest waiting till 2 weeks old before you handle the baby. However, if the mother is not too protective and aggressive when you put your hand near her, you can handle the baby at 1 week old. NO LESS THAN 1 WEEK or chances of the baby getting eaten is very high. Also, rub your hands in the bedding before you pick up the baby. I used wood shavings back when Chubster had her babies so I used to pick up a handful of wood shavings and cover my scent with the smell of wood. This is one of the precautions to take when handling the baby. |
