A new & happy D7000 user..My opinion about camera model is this :
Buy the model your budget permits / home minister approval (for married men) and reserve some extra money for a good lens and useful accessories ( tripods, external flash, etc )
Not to be too worried about replacement models and such ...
It is just a marketing gimmick, pricing structure ( nice but unused features ) and race against Canon models
Even those older/lower models takes great pictures if the user is a skillful photographer...
I don't even use the full-hd video recording or the LiveView functions ( except to zoom in on macro shots to check the focusing )
For long term investment, get those with built-in motor to support a wider variety of lens...
The newer models usually have more intelligent features to make better photo decision on behalf of the users..
