How to differentiate AP and NIKON MALAYSIA warranty set.

All Nikon Malaysia set comes with warranty card like this

The wording NIKON MALAYSIA SDN. BHD on the warranty card is the best way to identify whether it's a genuine local set. smile.gif

Second hand lens/dslr buying guide.

Credits to : zrasang

Firstly, check the outlook for both Body and Lens, if you're happy with it, then proceed to the next stepsssss.  cool2.gif

For the Body:
1. check the Shutter Count, the lower the SC, the better it is, just like a car's milage. Google has a clearer explanation.
2. if the Body has motor and top LCD, make sure they both work well, it's sux if the motor doesn't work, it's sux if the top LCD can't light up.
3. test the Body with various memory cards, you don't want to have error while shooting, don't you? (sometimes it's the memory card that give trouble)
4. test Continuous shoot, will the shutter jam?  rclxub.gif
5. basically you'll have to test everything, every single functions and settings of the body, like ISO, pop-up flash, the condition of hot shoe, the buttons etc etc

As for the lens:
1. it's important that the rubber is still firm.
2. make sure it works on more than ONE Bodies.
3. play with aperture, the zoom if it has, play with it like a toy.
4. if the lens got dust and fungus inside, you can send it for cleaning.
5. if the contact points are dirty, gently use eraser to clean it.
6. if the lens is AF-S, make sure the motor inside is silent while auto focusing, no loud squeaky sound.

what else?  hmm.gif  hmm.gif

Remember, these are based on my personal experiences, correct me if I'm wrong  notworthy.gif

Actli i don't know anything about it ; just asking on behalf on my parents.

How much is D7000 ? kit lenses ?
My father said he wanted a camera which can zooms ; easier to take photos if he go for any events ; can take from far.
He also expects a full package as in , SD , bag inclusive for the camera.

Any advices ?
and
any places recommended to buy the cameras from ? Will be going down to KL next week.

D7000 body it self is about RM2990, from what i heard from my friend who's into photography, with kit lens 18-105mm i think should be around RM3900?

But i got a quote of RM4200 which consist of D7000 + 18-105mm + 50mm f1.8d, with 8GB SD Card and Bag.

That's bout the right price. But looking at joscmh90's requirement, I don't think the 50mm would be necessary.

@joscmh90 Usually nowadays the cameras come with SD the card and the bag. The lens is up to you which to take. With or without kit lens. Since you're asking for your dad, does he have any budget (or no specific budget?); also, I think a beginner camera would do for your dad hmm.gif

your dad in before is a DSLR kaki before?
since you did mentioned he want to "easier to take photos if he go for any events".... do he consider a EVIL camera? like panasonic GF-1/GF-2/GF-3 , sony NEX-C3 bla bla tongue.gif

i am not sure your dad is pixel peep or not haha... plus do he like midrange DSLR's buttons? like last time i handed my D70s to my dad he straight said " WTH so many buttons, i just wanted to take a photo casually".... if like that i rather choose D5100 for him since lighter body (but grip is small) and got guide mode....and got live view as well (if compare to D70s tongue.gif )

about zoom ar.... either use your dad's leg as zooom (ask your dad move to front tongue.gif ) or get a budget zoom lens like 70-300 non-VR (mind that require a god hand if you shoot in darker area without tripod).

anyway ask your dad , what he wanted to shoot in event. and what subject that need take from FAR? birds? someone bathing and forget close the window?

Nope , actli he's new with DSLR ; he meant by event is probably ; just any small (normal) events for example : prize giving awards to church camps events. He said would be troublesome if there's so many people and he is sitting at the back.

I told him ; should walk in-front but he insisted on zoom. So i guess , he really wanted the zoom thingy. haha

At first ; the budget set is below RM3000 ; but for the zoom lens he said that RM3.2-3.3 should be fine ( which is without the kit lenses ).

So i wonder if there's any better alternative , or is this worth it ?

Also , for the UV filter...any advice ? as in how to check whether good quality and so forth ?

even if go zoom also useless if your dad is behind of the "human wall". unless he got something to stand up like stairs.
summore i heard this i rather thinking recommended him EVIL camera, google "panasonic GF-1, GF-2, GF-3 / Sony Nex-3 / Nex-5 / Nex-C3"
oh wait i duno that one got zoom(of zoom far enough) lens or not. sweat.gif

plus that one no require to use viewfinder, and have very light body tongue.gif
price i duno got over budget or not... laugh.gif

need pros to recommended haha.

here is the GF-2 (old) ads... ask your dad watch it. see your dad like this system or still wanted DSLR system brows.gif

Edit: important question: DO HE HAVE FRIENDS THAT PLAY DSLR AS WELL? ALL NIKON? IF GOT I TAKE BACK MY WORDS. because he will have a great coach from his side and maybe can borrow lens from them, plus ya D7000k is a good body, D5100 is not bad but is a beginner spec, so when tuning some setting will be quite headache because dont have much "shortcuts" button on the body tongue.gif

True, it's important to evaluate what the person wants; For simple and casual use, better to go for high end point and shoot or mirrorless; If they get DSLR, and then prefer to use LIVE VIEW, they'll find the performance dissappointing and not what they expected, handling also different, bulky, lazy to carry around everytime, need to think about cleaning sensor, lens, this and that.

Maybe they should go to a shop and test/try out those high end compacts (with superzoom if they like zoom), or even better, mirrorless.... Check out the GF2, the performance is so good, touch focus and blaaaazing fast focus and snap even indoor shots, plus it comes with tons of features that were not available in DSLR, they can adjust background or foreground blur, etc. And yes, there're also telephoto lenses available. This one is compact and good for on-the-go casual shooting, easy and fun to use.
