actually it is nice, but due to the lighting is awkward to me...
maybe you use the flash la. so the subject i feel the light is from front/right but the background light is from back...makes it like not match. hmm.gif

like not match? are you serious? i wouldnt want to argue with you much but im betting you dont even know how hard it is to shoot in high noon and get at least good exposure on the subject not to mention a soft light which makes it harder.

but if you say what i did is wrong, than Joe McNally (one of the world's photography pros and nikon pro photographer) is kinda wrong too I guess. Then nikon dont need the use of FP highspeed sync then.. Look at the video at 2:25. http://www.joemcnallyasia.tv/?p=288 "makes it like not match." eyh? goodness...this is the first time i've heard that..

it is sad to say this as i also have a nikon but the saying "Buying a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer. It makes you a Nikon owner." is so true...

many more... (i guess they are wrong too)

I just need a real opinion by my fellow friends here whether my background exposure is okay or maybe it should be darker or any other comments & suggestions. smile.gif

Don't worry about Agito666's reply, because I honestly think that it's a very good picture tongue.gif

I definitely thought that the lighting technique was superb, still managing to retain the skin tone very well thumbup.gif

Heck, many people don't know how hard is it to shoot outdoors and yet, get a good lighting on subject especially during a hot sunny day shakehead.gif

p/s: The clouds are a bit distracting I feel hmm.gif

alpha_company, you clearly have to understand something on daylight fill flash and strobing.

1. The background and your lighting. The background you have were very cloudly and harsh green while your flash pushes the hero subjects and the background far to off.*

2. Composition and focal length. Obviously that is wide angle as it is really awkward to have your hero subjects to be standing in this manner. Simply said, the females are leaning back while the male is obviously too front out of the rest. If you are to pose them, make it visually comfortable and take not of the distortion or pincushions your lens is creating. If 17mm is the widest, shoot at 18mm or 19mm to avoid the distortion.

*Your flash power is too harsh for such background. A subtle amount of strobe is enough to fill the hero subject as well as soft highlights while making used of the sunlight.

Only time you use harsh lights is when the sunlight is an hour away from horizon or gloomy dark clouds as if its going to rain heavily. From the outcome of your shots does leads too many misleading techniques which they assume from your final shot.

You can learn from the pros and even with all the skills learned but applied on the wrong time of the day, it will still end up very wrong. Not the fault of the pros, not the fault of anything else but the fault of the photographer.

Forgive me if i sound harsh. My honest critic on your shot smile.gif

The tree top right and bottom left are distracting!

Crop tighter and make it half body, the guy's hand in the centre doesn't make appropriate to the group photo, crop to half body will make it better

Next time shoot through using shoot through umbrella, if you are using 1 flash, put it in the centre, else if you are using 2 flash, put it on left and right to eliminate the shadow (look at the guy's hand)

Background too cool? That would indicate that there is presence of white light source. Not yellow. If you have to shoot in Tungsten WB, avoid white light source !
Aiks... Perhaps you did not really read what I wrote earlier on why you need to use the tungsten gel with yellow lighting. Your main subject's WB from your main lighting (from flash) would be close to background's WB so that it's easier to tune WB in PP if required. Your background would not turn very yellow while subject remains neutral or your subject turns blue while your background is slightly yellow.
What type of action scenes is this that requires 1/125 in a dimly lit environment?

If you have a f/1.4, you would be able to shoot at ISO 1600.  thumbup.gif

Err? I'm just telling him if he's getting patches with white and yellow lighting, one way would overpower the ambient and use flash as main source lighting. What has it got to do with color gels?

Sure color gel can solve this, but if you don't have one at hand then you need to deal with situation with what you have. doh.gif I'm just giving suggestions on how he can attempt to handle these conditions.

color gel work till a limit only. but somehow, i dont like sb900 gel, its not that accurate, usually i force custom WB to it, add a little more magenta to get back the skintone. minus 2 contrast.

also, any lens with aperture wider then F4 usually will mess up the whole eV equation... due to wide open aperture like F2.8, the camera detect enough light, so the flash fires at lower power, hence the ambient color will still over power your flash, gel or non gel.

Yup.. you can mount any FX lens as the mounts are the same. The only difference is in the glass construction, FX lens covers a larger image area to fit the larger FX sensor.
