Hi Everyone, my home is in Gelugor, Penang.

Recently, a whole bunch of tiles fell off one of the walls in my bathroom.

Can you please share your Penang contractor contacts to help me fix this? Greatly appreciate recommendations and phone numbers.

If have to, I'm OK with renovating all the tiles in the bathroom.

Thanks in advance, John

found my tiles at wet kitchen crack, and go n knock it one by one then found out most of the tiles also got hollow sound...
picture taken after i ask the tiling guy to hack the tiles out to see..
from the picture, i can see gap between the cement and the wall, seem like the tiles is stick to the cement but cement not stick to the wall.....another picture show that the wall is smooth meaning the tiling guy didnt knock the wall 1st before lay the tiles.....

anyone knoe why this happening? is it my assumption correct? very hard when u wan them to admit is their fault.......

If that was original wall was smooth plaster the contractor need to rough it. If it was build up new wall no need rough normally the tiler will lay on the brick, or the plastering will use rough surface.

Sometime they use susu to helps the tikes stick. Look like you may have to hack out the hollow part and redo.

hi, i was quoted...

hacking rm 0.80 per sqf including throwing away the hacked tiles
laying tiles rm 3.00 per sqf, floor or wall is the same

is this below market or reasonable? the price is from a sarawakian tiler who is working with a tiles manufacturer and this is his second job with a friend... im abit skeptical... so trying to find out first... will see how is workmanship in the jobs he did...

So how was the workmanship ? If ok, can I hv the ctc no?

When were the tiles put in? Got warranty or not? I was told by contractor that wall tiles falling off quite common after 5-7 years, due to air and humidity. Not sure if this is true or not, but it's what I was told. John

Good evening all,

I am in a dilemma and would like some advise from all sifu-sifu and veterans...

I just received a quote from my contractor, and apparently from what i gather from this thread (i read like 30% of it) the prices for tiling for Chinese workers is roughly below RM5/sqft (please correct me if i am wrong)

I would like to share my quotation with all sifu and veteran, please comment about this quotation as i am baffled by the price he is quoting me.

(1) to supply labour for laying wall tiles (2' x 1') up to 10ft high; total about 410sqft = RM4,100 (about RM10/sqft)
(2) to supply labour for laying floor tiles (2' x 2'); total about 168sqft = RM2,520 (about RM15/sqft)
(3) to supply labour for laying car porch tiles (2' x 1'); total about 550sqft = RM3,600 (about RM6.60/sqft)

I did a backwards calculation against my because he quoted me a lump sum price.

According to him, this price includes all materials excluding tiles, and the work is done by a chinese sifu.

Please advise as the pricing is baffling..

Thank you all in advance for your advise.

As it was explained to me, hollow sound is due to the wear and tear of plaster/cement holding the tiles. If installed in Feb, I would think your tiles shouldn't sound hollow when you knock them. Best to get your tiles checked by another contractor, because the last thing you want is a tile falling off suddenly and injuring you or your loved one. John
