Some of the main improvement of SGS2 which I like are:

1) 8 Megapixel rear camera with LED flash
2) Front camera is 2 Megapixel.
3) 1 Gig Internal RAM
4) Matt back cover casing (will not be a fingerprint magnet I think).
5) Not sure if it is 1080p HD recording?
6) Bigger capacity 1650mah battery.
*
1. Led flash is very useful, but xenon flash is better. But cannot compare to a normal compact camera for quality. To me, phone camera is useful for quick snapshots, qr code, goggles, augmented reality.

2. Good, can get better quality for video conferencing. Though not critical.

3. With optimized kernel, 512ram seems enough. Linux is famed for its low hardware requirement because it is very efficient. (unlike crappy windows). My netbook running on fully functional arch linux only consumes 57MB ram. I will be disappointed if future android requires more ram to run. However, 1GB ram is very useful for gaming.

5.i believe so. The atrix will only have 1080p recording after a firmware update.

6. Dual core = less battery consumption. Coupled together with higher battery capacity, will give longer battery life. Really nice.

Don't forget about near field communication too.

to me, battery life and faster processor is what I'd like. The rest are gimmicks especially I don't do those casual gaming on a phone.

While dual core speed bump on a phone is nice, it will give much more impact on a tablet. I wanted to see a miniature desktop core2duo performance on a tablet where I can run not only android, but conventional linux like ubuntu as well. I imagine running lampp server, play football manager, civilization, etc on a tablet rclxm9.gif if I can run those on a phone, that'd be superb!

sgs is fine for my needs. Sgs2 is better in every way but it doesn't do enough to justify for an upgrade. YMMV.

for those thinking of buying a smartphone for the first time, you won't regret buying those dual core ones like sgs2.

I believe so. I have perform many gps fixed (not including the hardware fixed), but the best combination is by using xwjs5 based rom+epic 4g gps fix file system+gps aids. Now can get fixed inside house even with very low snr!! I've tested each fixed and changing the to epic 4g gps file system definitely improved in getting fast cold fix. Changing modem (jpp, dxjpb, dxjpa, zsjpe, xxjpy, xxjpx,) give little impact on gps on my finding. Hope anyone complaining about gps should have performed this fix first before start complaining!

Btw, changing to epic gps file system may caused harm to your hp. Do at your own risk!!

epic 4g gps fix file system link

gps aid can be found on market already

any xwjs5 based rom will do the trick

Nexus s uses modern ext4 file system instead of retarded file system (rfs). Maybe they've learned their mistake. Hopefully there will be no gps issue as well. Then, it'll be a winner if it is easily available throughout the world.

Currently, only few rom available in rom manager for galaxy s. Even the insanity is available through paid ver. If u want to perform nandroid backup or installing new rom, cwm is much butter.

Hi Everyone,

My trust old nokia just broke and I was thinking of getting a new android phone as a replacement. I am stuck in between SGS and DHD. Since Im just planning to use it for a while before I upgrade to the newest Dual Core models. I was thinking of the SGS instead with the really nice Amoled screen.

However, I keep hearing that the SGS has the GPS issue and need to use custom ROMs and fixes. Sounds like a lot of work to do when you get it new. And I really need a GPS Navigator too so I can't make do without it.

Would love to hear about this issue from current SGS owners.

Thanks in advanced! smile.gif

Out of box, dhd has the better gps reception compared to sgs. Even after the gps fix (hardware, software, modem, file system), dhd still has the better gps reception. True the gps on sgs sucks, but it is still usable. I can live with it, some can't. I use it whenever i can't bring my trusted garmin nuvi with me from point A to point B firmly. If u plainly want to use it along with gps, u better think twice. If u have unlimited data plan (using a-gps) instead, there won't be any gps issue.

i'm a SGS-rian...
pretty dissapointed with the GPS, even after apply custom ROM (darky).
it has improved a bit, compare to stock, however cannot match to DHD...
a fren of mine is using DHD, and i've make comparison head to head with mine....

but in term of other features, definitely SGS beat the DHD.
conclusion, if u looking for short term smartphone with good GPS function,go for DHD.

as for me,i'll definitely going to own the SGS II.heeheh

anyway, its just my opinion.do refer to others too...they might have better opinion than mine.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that all the GPS issues that the SGS is having is because it is slow in sat-lock by itself but if with A-GPS it works like any other phone?

Wow, if that is the case then the SGS would work well. Smartphones are supposed to be used with internet anyway. smile.gif

so far i tested only DEFY gps with SGS, and i say DEFY win, so the main point here is, ALL yes i say ALL phone have better GPS than SGS, capiche? cause they messed up the design, messed up the hardware, and messed up the software. nothing to do,

but i just do a run from shah alam to one utama, and back, 1st time open when going to 1U kinda take long time (lucky jam at that time), but on the way back is hot start so fast lock up, got 5 jumping, but the jump not long, maybe in 3 second like that, then it back on the track, JPY modem

using AURA SYGIC, aura indicate 4m accuracy.

aura kinda nice... their lane assist really help eventhough not much road, but the road is more than enough to help, it contain some jalan dalam also,, not like other GPS software (except papago of course) that contain mostly highway and main road.

not to say i dont disagree with you, but if i were you i will go to DHD(or any other phone for that matter) if GPS is super important, just in the case of emergency and got internet at that place.

Haha. Yup, most of those who are complaining because they use gps only, without aided gps (data off). Im using prepaid thus using data is going to be expensive. In fact, using a-gps is definitely less battery drain compared to solely use the gps. Btw, i rarely use agps (i used once or twice only) so i cant really comment if the a-gps lock as fast as other phone. But using a-gps surely will improve the sat-lock compared without using it.

Btw, with my current setup, i don't think i'll be using a-gps to get sat-lock! biggrin.gif

1. LED flash is better than no flash. least you get usable (means its not high quality but you can see who it is) night shots. SGS? can't take any shots in the dark. fact. and SGS siblings FASCINATE & EPIC has LED flash, i fail to see Samsung's failure to include it in SGS.. yes I am rather sore over this

2. no comment.

3. more ram is always better. remember the famous fail statement that Bill denies?

yeah, don't be another Bill Gates. RAM is never enough.

5. ditto.

yeap, same goes to me here. i've been waiting like for 4 years to get a high-end phone, so SGS 2 is a no-go for me. yawn.gif

btw right now, the best thing that can ever happen to SGS is MIUI rom. i hope they can solve the problems tho, i really love the MIUI launcher. so simpleeee~ and for gingerbread to come to us, i guess we'll have to wait for another month perhaps. sweat.gif
