Congratulations for a new thread and new ts!

anyway, for the reply for the person who asked about dpi: it's purely cosmetic only. A lot of apps scale properly especially on insanity rom, but one app like speedtest does not. I like 200dpi because imo, it looks a lot nicer, can't see me go back to default 240dpi any time soon.

I have a suggestion, why don't we test different modems by ourselves and post the result here. Like what pele78 did in xda developers. Ts can add it to the front page.

- use wifi analayzer app to see wifi signal strength and at what distance from router.
- use speedtest to see wifi speed
- use speedtest to see edge and 3g speed
- use lbs test mode for gps test - using outdoor is more preferable!
- flash a diferent modem and repeat.
Need to include which carrier on location too because result will vary accordingly. Flashing a new modem is easy - just dl the modem cwm and flash in recovery mode.

If everyone contributes, we can have a reference for malaysia users very quickly.

I don't know what ts wants to put on the front page but you can add my suggestions for change that I posted in the previous thread smile.gif just to make it more up to date.

guys...i'm trying to cook Doc rom now...but need little advise...which modem should i choose...europe or asia...which one better?...
*
For starters, you can choose asia modem JPB. Later on, you can try other modems which may have better performance & battery life.

halo sifus here.. v 13 oredy! im really satisfied with my sgs since ive a lot of frens here discussing the sgs. hehe.. anyway i found the new kernel in the xda.. TEGRAK! any one of u have tried this one before.. i want to implement it on my darky but afraid if it not compatible with dark side armies.. hehe.. my idea is to having the best battery life..

here the tegrak http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=920711
*
Why don't you try it for yourself icon_rolleyes.gif I've been getting better battery life and smoothness using speedmod than super optimized kernel after switching back and forth between different versions. I'll try tegrak sometime soon.

Added on January 30, 2011, 4:15 pmTS, got a few suggestions for firstpage

1.:For battery calibration, I'm not sure of draining the battery till empty will do the li-ion battery any good. I read that it'll do harm if it's below 5%. need more clarification from battery experts.
- For step 6, not sure if root access is needed but you can also delete batterystats.bin from sgstools or from recovery mode.
- I usually just charge till full, reboot into recovery and delete batterystats from there. Again, I don't know the best way to calibrate the battery. My method seems fine.

2.Modem testing
can add link to the apps. easier, no need users to open market app. speedtest:
Lbstestmode can be started by dialling *#*#1472365#*#* or can be accessed from sgs tools app.

3. Before flashing
Besides checking if 3 button combo is working, need to backup IMEI too by making a copy of the /efs folder.
See this: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s/...tml#post1367506 Needs to be rooted.

lol. overclocking is to improve the perfomance of the cpu. ours by default is 1ghz. so by overclocking to 1.2ghz, your device will be faster and smoother, but burns more battery  laugh.gif
*
Burns more battery? If we overclock and undervolt, should consume less battery right? apps like voltage control by xan can adjust these settings.

how is it done?
*
You need a supported kernel like super-optimized kernel. Then, download xan's voltage control app from xda. You can set the max cpu clock and set undervoltage.

you tested SO kernel without OC+UV? i remember seeing a post of yours saying speedmod > SO  laugh.gif
*
Yes, because to compare both kernels, I need to make both of them at the same settings, SO 1.2ghz with UV vs speedmod 1ghz is not comparable.

Is SGS cannot play FUll HD video?? (1920 x 1080)

Or I use the wrong app?? I use RockPlayer to play a Full HD video clip, but is lagging..
*
Not that powerful, can play upto 720p officially. For full hd (1080p) need a more powerful device like tegra2 based one like motorola atrix or lg optimux 2x.

i see. in the end i still prefer speedmod. just that it lacks OC. i wonder why he doesn't want to implement OC to his kernel
*
If you wish, you can underclock and undervolt. That will make the battery lasts even longer. I once set it at 600mhz max long time ago. It seems ok, boleh pakai punya. 400mhz cannot, became laggy laugh.gif

guys. i'm trying out Doc rom now.
in the middle of downloading the rom.

due to the reason that this is the first time i try this. I hope someone can tell me on the best way to flash to doc rom from Darky 9.2?

my phone is on ext4, speedmod kernel.

do i need to disable lagfix before i flash to doc rom?

should i flash the phone back to a stock rom before I flash to doc rom?

thx.
*
If you choose js3 base, then a non-wipe should be sufficient. Some people here are reporting that no need for disabling lagfix. addon: Of course, a wipe version will be better. just make a titanium backup

however, if you run into trouble, the best way is to start from scratch: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=926399 It is advisable to disbale lagfix and tweaks, and use wipe version.

Just remember to make a backup: apps+data, sms, call log, etc

You guys won't regret moving to doc's rom. He a real pro biggrin.gif

I have a secret. I know I have been ushering you guys into trying doc's since I first joined this thread but I myself haven't even press the generate button yet biggrin.gif The last rom i tried was the stable one before doc and stefunel introduced the kitchen. Been happy with insanity rom rclxm9.gif because there were less posts in nitr8's thread. I like to read everything before flashing a rom and I cannot keep up with doc's rom anymore rclxub.gif

@gmhafiz

i don't understand how to use those commands in backing up the imei. mind elaborating on it? smile.gif
*
Sure. Have to complete two steps prior:
1. Have to be rooted
2. Install terminal emulator

Next, open up the terminal emulator and type in the commands:
CODE
$ su
this is to elevate your privilege into superuser or admin. Press enter
CODE
# busybox tar zcvf /sdcard/efs-backup.tar.gz /efs

You'll notice that $ becomes #.
- busybox is the program that makes the following commands work
- tar: takes the /efs folder and compress it into .tar.gz format
- the tar.gz file is stored into your sdcard folder as efs-backup.tar.gz
CODE
# cat /dev/block/stl3 > /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3.img

This just copies it into the .img file

When you are done, copy both .tar.gz and .img files into your computer/dropbox/somewhere safe.

This is just one method using terminal method. Using adb, of course is possible. I think with the adb way, you not need to be rooted.

i cant get the 3rd command to work. 'no such directory found'

Added on January 30, 2011, 9:07 pmbut i found 3 files in my sdcard

1)tar.gz as you have mentioned
2) efs_dev-blockg
3)efs_dev-block-st13.img
*
Ok, I think you made typo. Should be stl3, not st13. L, not thirteen. I made this mistake thinking it was 13 too. Cheers!
CODE

$ su
# cat /dev/block/stl3 > /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3-2.img

Since you already have the .img file, it may have been generated automatically before you flashed a rom - perhaps a rom script? But I don't know where efs_dev-blockg could have come from.

if you got root explorer you job would be much more easier
*
yes, you can use root explorer to backup /efs folder. However, It cannot open the /dev/block/stl3 folder. It is only visible when I use terminal emulator.

One added bonus of using terminal emulator is that the date as well as permission of all files can be preserved. Not that it matters. It just that command kung-fu method makes an exact copy of everything under /efs folder.

can i delete those efs files from the internal sd?
*
CODE
$ su
# cat /dev/block/stl3 > /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3.img

If you look at above command, the "cat" command is to tell the device to read the "/dev/block/stl3" and create a file called "efs_dev-block-stl3.img" inside /sdcard folder and copy its content into it.

So if you typed /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3.img before, you can make a new file by typing /sdcard/efs_dev-block-stl3-second.img instead.

Yes, you can delete those 0 bytes files. Then, you can retry.

lets wait for gmhafiz's reply ya?  biggrin.gif

i also not sure how to restore back imei using those files. just keeping for safety  sweat.gif
*
There used to be poeple who corrupted their IMEI due to bad flashing, during the eclair days. This is because they flashed a bad firmware. That is why they recommended to backup IMEI in case anything happen. Nowadays, imei corruption doesn't happen anymore since a lot of us uses custom rom. Some rom like insanity AFAIK, automatically backups /efs folder.

restoring /efs is simple. Just open the .tar.gz with 7zip, copy all of its contents into /efs folder. Just use rootexplorer if you bought it.

i advise you to go for froyo 2.2 and use speedmod kernel

still quite battery-lasting
*
Or, you can use super optimized kernel and underclock + undervolt. the phone will use less battery consumption = longer battery life.

It is actually a feature of froyo by samsung. Once 100% is reached, charging is automatically switched off to avoid overcharging of the battery. TS can put this to frontpage in FAQ or something. Can put on this link too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596

bigger ram = smoother?
*
Yes. But unused ram = waste. My netbook only uses 67MB (Arch linux FTW!) after booting and less than 400MB with chromium browser with few tabs on. If I upgrade to 8GB, it will make no difference in smoothness.

This is why task killers are unnecessary. Android will manage its ram automatically. However I read that android manages it poorly. Thanks to kernels like speedmod, SO and others, there's no need to worry about ram management anymore.
