a new review from slightly different i900 : http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9003_gala...-review-562.php

the best part IMO is :
battery is 1650mAH instead.. but with SLCD. not superAMOLED. with much lower price tag.
plus&minus, it is still great.
*
From the review they did mentioned that the battery can fit our battery bay. Thats a good news!

I keep my home screen as minimal as possible but I do have some widgets.

it is featured on one of the android news blog. I don't use it because it is only for windows. Since it can sync photos, music, videos, I can't see why it can't transfer apk files to your sd card. Why don't you try and tell us about it?

Hye. Based on ur home screen, i suspect u are using nitr8's rom right? have u tried installing gingerbread keyboard? i always get fc after installing them (even after clear delvik cache and delete the dbdata/databases/files). Ive tried many methods but still get fc. Until one time i dont know how, after installing many gingerbread keyboard, then only can use the gingerbread keyboard. But then swype keyboard get fc. haha. strange.

Odd, both of my keyboards are working well. Did you install gbkb from insanity thread page or from other source?
*

I get it from this post. I've also tried the other method available on xda. Its ok. I'll try to reflash back the rom and see how it does.

Wan to ask...
How to update the papago maps?? Just download the latest papago maps from Malfree...But no idea how to update it on the phone.
*

This question has been answered many times... Its easy one. U copy the whole file (eg. MFM-PPG-110126C, not the folder; but all the files inside) and replace the files under sdcard/NaviSEA/Maps/MALAYSIA/ . It will override the old data.

Dear Sifus, I don't understand about the custom ROM. What does it mean by Themes??

1. Does it mean that the user interface of the custom ROM is different from the Official Samsung ROM?
2. What Should I use to back up my contacts, setting and apps for the first time I flashed to custom ROM?
3. What is a kernel? Does is mean I can change the kernel without changing/ flashing to the custom ROM?
4. I saw some posts that mention some of the ROM is having problem with lagginess, Wifi, GPS locking time, Notification bar, can't download from market place etc...... sound so scary. Can anyone clarify these??
5. Can I restore back to Samsung Original ROM if I'm not happy with the performance of the custom ROM or if I want to send in for warranty claim?
6. Noob question....What is a homemade jig?????

Sorry for so many noobs question. If it's too troublesome to reply all. I would really appreciate if provided a link.
Many thanks to all the sifus.

Custom rom is where u get the unofficial update from developer. The right way is to get it from samsung, through kies (which is the official one). Themes is like a package where modification made to notification bar, wallpaper, home screen, dockbar, drawer etc. Basically its customize the interface of our sgs. Custom rom basically is a modified version of official rom. They were made to provide a better response, customize, speed, and add many addons which will make our sgs snappier. An official rom is available through regions; meaning different region will get different update, different modem. This cannot be altered if u are on stock rom. However, a custom rom allows u to have different setup; different modem, different kernal etc.

1. Yes and no. It can look exactly like an official rom (if u wanted to) or u can have a heavily customized interface.

2. U can syc with google contact to back up ur contacts. To backup sms, use sms backup+. For apps, normally we all used titanium backup (free/paid - but it requires the phone to be rooted first) or my backup pro (paid). But if u allowed google to backup ur application , once u have flashed to custom rom, the phone will automatically restore ur files when u logged in (only if u allow for automatic restore; can check this through settings>privacy>mobile backup and restore)

3. Kernal act as a layer between hardware and software. It controls the process, ram management, network etc. U can either a) installed custom kernal while maintaining ur official rom or b) installed custom kernal with custom rom

4. Well. All those problem derived from a stock rom. With custom rom, u can minimized (if not eliminate) most of the problems.

5. Definitely! It is easier than installing a custom rom! Just u have to ensure that u can access 3 button download mode.

6. When u brick ur phone (cannot enter the phone, cannot enter download/recovery mode thru 3 button combos, stuck in boot loop; practically ur phone screwed), here comes the homemade jig. Basically it tries to enter the download mode (although it is impossible when ur phone does not respond). It consists of resistor and micro usb.

Ultimately, u can go to the front page and read the whole thing. Its virtually impossible to brick ur phone if u read all the steps and follows them. Happy flashing!

Have you guys experience any problems with your Bluetooth? I don't have problem pairing my phone with mu Bluetooth headsets but I can seem to use my phone to effectively transfer files to other phones.

What do you guys have to say about this?
*

My bluetooth seems to be working fine. I normally transfer from laptop-hp and hp-hp with no hiccups. Mind telling whats ur hp spec?

Before this can can u transfer files thru bluetooth? Maybe it wasnt ur hp fault. How bout the other hp (the receiver)? Have u tried transferring to other hp/ laptop as well? Flash back to different rom/kernal if nothing works.

BLN is included in the Darky ROM, But I tried. No Light at the back / menu button.
Thanks for your recommendation.
*

True. Even speedmod kernal do have option for bln, BUT u have to enable them. Go to cwm recovery, and enable the bln. On default, they are disable.

Hi all. To those of u who are using the sgp ultra slider, just a friendly reminder. Be careful whenever you try to insert/pull the case from your hp. It will make very small scratches on the silver part. It is not very noticeable, but still visible if you look closely. Make sure the sticker that they gave (the carbon fiber look alike) was placed where the slider meets the silver part of the phone. Otherwise, no point of putting them. I've owned one few months back, now using the otterbox tongue.gif

For those of u havent got urself a casing, i recommend otterbox commuter. I found it a better companion compared tp my old sgp ultra slider coz it protects ur phone all round! It even has cover for the earphone jack! Its a combination of soft silicone rubber + hard outer shell. Unlike ultra slider, it does not attract oil at all. This was due to the surface that is like a matte hard surface i guess. Then the power button and volume rocker will be slightly protude, thus u can easily reach them. If u always go to recovery mode, this will come in handy! And because the back cover has a hard surface,u will feel comfort when holding the phone. I dont feel loose when holding it. Add extra grip compared not to bare case. I got one from garage sale

aduh sgs 2 no more gps issue right?
*

I believe so. I have perform many gps fixed (not including the hardware fixed), but the best combination is by using xwjs5 based rom+epic 4g gps fix file system+gps aids. Now can get fixed inside house even with very low snr!! I've tested each fixed and changing the to epic 4g gps file system definitely improved in getting fast cold fix. Changing modem (jpp, dxjpb, dxjpa, zsjpe, xxjpy, xxjpx,) give little impact on gps on my finding. Hope anyone complaining about gps should have performed this fix first before start complaining!

Btw, changing to epic gps file system may caused harm to your hp. Do at your own risk!!

epic 4g gps fix file system link

gps aid can be found on market already

any xwjs5 based rom will do the trick

Currently, only few rom available in rom manager for galaxy s. Even the insanity is available through paid ver. If u want to perform nandroid backup or installing new rom, cwm is much butter.

QUOTE(muffdiver @ Feb 18 2011, 11:06 PM)
Hi Everyone,

My trust old nokia just broke and I was thinking of getting a new android phone as a replacement. I am stuck in between SGS and DHD. Since Im just planning to use it for a while before I upgrade to the newest Dual Core models. I was thinking of the SGS instead with the really nice Amoled screen.

However, I keep hearing that the SGS has the GPS issue and need to use custom ROMs and fixes. Sounds like a lot of work to do when you get it new. And I really need a GPS Navigator too so I can't make do without it.

Would love to hear about this issue from current SGS owners.

Thanks in advanced! smile.gif
*

Out of box, dhd has the better gps reception compared to sgs. Even after the gps fix (hardware, software, modem, file system), dhd still has the better gps reception. True the gps on sgs sucks, but it is still usable. I can live with it, some can't. I use it whenever i can't bring my trusted garmin nuvi with me from point A to point B firmly. If u plainly want to use it along with gps, u better think twice. If u have unlimited data plan (using a-gps) instead, there won't be any gps issue.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that all the GPS issues that the SGS is having is because it is slow in sat-lock by itself but if with A-GPS it works like any other phone?

Wow, if that is the case then the SGS would work well. Smartphones are supposed to be used with internet anyway. smile.gif
*

Haha. Yup, most of those who are complaining because they use gps only, without aided gps (data off). Im using prepaid thus using data is going to be expensive. In fact, using a-gps is definitely less battery drain compared to solely use the gps. Btw, i rarely use agps (i used once or twice only) so i cant really comment if the a-gps lock as fast as other phone. But using a-gps surely will improve the sat-lock compared without using it.

Btw, with my current setup, i don't think i'll be using a-gps to get sat-lock! biggrin.gif
