Hi,
I'm currently working as a quality eng. with a company that does o&g pipeline welding.

I'm thinking of getting some certificates soon and was wondering which certificates would give me the most bang for my buck?

and what field should i be concentrating on to move up in the o&g industry? i understand there are many fields in o&g but i would like to know what each of you personally thinks is the best and later i will judge for myself which is most suitable for me.

all c&c welcome. thanks.

For those who all O&G engineers are highly paid, that's wrong, at least in Msia. Only those with EXPERIENCE will be highly paid.

Yes, consultancy firms always pay lower than contractor companies for fresh/entry levels and that is in any industry. As stated in previous posts, there are daily allowances if you go to the site. the high pay comes in terms of allowances offshore. so if you don't really work offshore, you can't really expect the high pay by just staying in the office. but at no means am i degrading a designer's work. as you grow in experience and technicality your knowledge might surpass the value of the offshore worker. but by that time the guy working offshore might have amassed a whole lot of money by then.

anyway, i'm working in singapore so i can't really say much about the pay in malaysia except from what i hear from my friends working back home.

Can civil engineer work in o & g??
*
Design office. Field. Civil engineering background is not as wanted as mechanical or electrical for offshore works but we can go into quite a few departments. And at the end of the day, it is your experience n work qualification that really matters in the end. I have a business grad friend that went into ong but through exp. got some certs and of course a lot of confidence. anyway, i say if ur grades are good, go straight for the big comps. not because they care about academics, but if they had hundreds applying for their vacancies, of course they would take the candidates with higher grades. if your grades are not so good, like mine, go for the less know companies. contractors if you want field work a.k.a money. what i hear in malaysia is that basic is low but allowance is quite competitive. and normally increases after probation n such, because afraid if give so much but end up quitting after 1 offshore job, rugi. so much to pay for your basic offshore survival training and stuff.

there was a time sapura, worley & some o&g consultants/fabricators requiring structural engineers during the crude oil price surging all time high USD1xx. not sure how is the situation now.

there are some cases where people from aeronautics background switch to oilfield services in quality dept due to their gauging & fabrication process experience.

everyone thinks O&G pays very high, true to a certain extent.

which type of oil and gas are you referring to?

if u want money, suck it up and work offshore.

no such thing as 5 days week 9-5 work to make big bucks.

big salary comes with a price, and if u r the ah beng, homely, sissy type, you better get another job.

certain companies, i rather not name which, are also very strict on the work performance. usually when you are hired, you will be given roughly 2 years chance to prove yourself. if you fail to meet expectations, you will be told to leave automatically. i am dead serious about this.

put it this way. i have seen a 2 years experience local uni graduate, petite malay female with head scarf, drawing 9K plus take home trying to get another job with a lower pay. get what i mean?

piping engineers is under downstream oil and gas and they dont make as much in general as upstream ones. i see it as more of a desk job.

dont get me wrong, they do make decent money, but only after a certain years.

your company should be able to advice you on this.

i am not from that field, but google CSWIP level 1,2,3 and all other related certifications.

if u go the right way, quality engineers make super big money, especially if u have the right cert.

best of all, they can do it without spending stupid hours offshore like the rest do.

everybody wana work offshore - but have they got what it takes?

Hi, i'm an undergraduate engineering student, graduating very soon.
Would like to know more about O&G field.

From my encounter vf O&G engineers, they r tend to be more highly-paid than other those in other field.
And they travel a lot, i mean, offshore and outstation.
Is this reli so?

Her's my question
What is the job description for an engineer in O&G field?
*
what engineering graduate? i would advise a CGPA of 3 or more for a start.

2nd, i would advise good command of english language. nowadays, i see a lot of so called graduates speak very bad english full of chinese accent.

this is a big no no and a big turn of. you better go work for your dad if you cannot speak good english.

International Oil Companies prefer good command of english language.

as i have posted above, O&G is huge, why do you want to join O&G?

Assuming you are talking about "field jobs", if Im honest with you they always prefer to hire people with engineering background although I have seen people with IT background and a Science degree working in the industry.
*
those with IT and Science backgroud usually entered via connections. i have seen civil guys as mud guys too.

if you are IT and Science, chances are slim.

there are also a lot a lot a lot of folks , usually the older generations who are paid highly but they have not even finished high school.

no more such stories nowadays.

Chances for freshie to enter the industry is slim eh? the MINIMUM requirement that i always observe is 3-5 years of experience..

i see. thanks.

but any tips on interview or something?

when i went for the first interview, they asked technical questions, eletrical wise, mechanical wise and so on.

2nd interview, i am not sure. hopefully will be straight with HR. i am nervous. then again, I even went to the 3rd interview of SLB and lastly got rejected due to "Your qualifications are too high for this post." sweat.gif
