Hi,
I'm currently working as a quality eng. with a company that does o&g pipeline welding.

I'm thinking of getting some certificates soon and was wondering which certificates would give me the most bang for my buck?

and what field should i be concentrating on to move up in the o&g industry? i understand there are many fields in o&g but i would like to know what each of you personally thinks is the best and later i will judge for myself which is most suitable for me.

all c&c welcome. thanks.

im fresh graduate in mechanical eng degree... want to venture into O&G field.. but i already told that chance is too slim..
now just finish my course on cswip 3.0 and 3.1.. planning to take couse on PCN welding inpection.

err... i cannot brain your post dude... rclxub.gif

who told you chances were slim for mechanical eng students to venture into oil n gas? blink.gif if anything, i'd say mechanical eng students are amongst the most likely to get a job in oil n gas..

how did u manage to get cswip 3.1 if you are a fresh grad? dont u need like 2 or 3 years on the job experience as cswip 3.0?
and if you already have a cswip 3.1, why bother taking PCN WI? 3.1 is already better than PCN...

Oil & Gas will run out in 10-20 years. But then we're gonna have Nuclear power plants so it's not that bad for you guys, can easily switch to Nuke plants.

oh really? rolleyes.gif
if it were true, do you seriously think the some of the biggest, most profitable companies in the world are just gonna lie on their backs and do nothing about it?
if there was even a hint of oil drying up in the next 50 years, you can bet ExxonMobil, Shell, Petronas and the like would begin to diversify their businesses like crazy. and watever business they choose to go into, you can bet they'll end up being a major player because they have the resources to do so.

hi, can u help me , i'm freshie , on the electrical side, wat course or certificate is available for me to help get into o&g ?  tongue.gif
*
if you want to stick to electrical, i dont think you have many options. FYI, i studied electrical too for my degree. the only options i got in o&g for electrical were: maintenance, instrumentation and control. dont know of any certs for electrical in o&g, maybe others can help you on this.

i got myself ISO 9001 and Internal Audit certs so that helped me land a job as a quality engineer.

thx for ur reply . i assume the position u mentioned here is all on-field and off-shore related , right ? as i heard , high pay is because of the allowance ppl get when going for off-shore  tongue.gif

or should i ask , can the on-desk job , like doing the detail electrical design for o&g, those kind of things .... stil able to get high pay ?

i now working for a construction m&e consultancy , is there any position related to the exp i have ?

it all depends on which company you join bro. if u get big bucks company, u get big bucks pay. if u get cheapskate company, u get cheapskate pay.
as far as i can see, the oil n gas industry is losing its shine. the recent instability of oil price and availability of cheap labour has caused pay to become lower for newbies. only the old guys with lots of experience still can demand crazy high pay.

it differs from company to company. my job is a desk job too but i sometimes get called up to go offshore if they need me there. usually, if your job is related to production, you will probably get called to offshore at some point. but if u are in marketing or HR, probably not.
yes, offshore is where the big bucks are.

a colleague of mine was from a construction m&e consultancy too. he joined oil n gas as a project supply eng. not sure if it had anything to do with his background though.

Bro... tell me more on your cert. about becoming quality engineer... currently stuck in the same situation like you.. i'm electrical n electronic eng. now struggling trying to land a proper career in oil and gas.. currently doing project management in 0&G company. but local company.. i'm more like a window person between client and execute work and coordinate sub-con doing the specialize work...

in the end, i learn shit... just surface knowledge... and more unfortunate, work at KAFT... near to KL.. meaning no allowance.. damn it.. basic pay only... sucks..

i can't land any job in electrical maintenance.. never learn instrumentation and control too.. so people wont hired me for that to...

basically i'm struggling...  sad.gif  sad.gif  icon_question.gif

need all the sifu help in suggesting what sould i do.. i look around until thinking taking inspection courses... basically anything just so that in the end, i know my career path will lead me to become a specialist engineer..

rite now, it's still a blurry path... i rather suffer to learn now then later when old.

owh.. just to share info with you guys.... in my office, there's a guy used to earn $25k a month... but now less then $10k... so basically, life doesn't go as u plan...  unsure.gif

i took my certs while i was still doing my bachelor's degree. It was a special offer price for students.
you can probably get a ISO 9001 and internal audit certificates from MPC. not sure how much they charge. probably quite cheap coz its government subsidized.

i personally am thinking about going into either measuring equipment calibration or welding inspection. meas. eq. calibration is a pretty simple job but low pay. welding inspection is also a simple job but you often have to work in harsh environments and be away from home for long periods at a time. very high pay though...

Need you guys' advice so pls help. Any and all feedback welcome.

I have 2.5 years work experience in OnG and recently received a job offer from Kencana HL in lumut but Im not sure whether or not i should go. I am currently working for a small MNC specializing in pipeline welding so I dont get much exposure to the oil n gas industry as a whole due to the pretty small job scope.

job offered at kencana is on permanent basis as QA engineer. same as my current job.
pay is rm3XXX. same as current job.
working hours is officially 48-50 hours/week. roughly same as current job but for kencana there is no compensation at all for working overtime and on rest days. meaning they can call me to work on sunday and not have to give me any money or replacement leave or watever at all. this sucks pretty bad.

if i go, it would be for the experience but I'm not sure if it is worth it coz the remuneration is actually slightly less than what I am getting now with my current employer.

what do you guys think?
