Add a switch:>  ------[fibrehome/ZTE unit]------[DIR615]------[Switch]---[IPTV set top box]-----TV

The advantage of adding switch is that the IPTV Set Top unit can be detached and move to any of the networked room.

You're pushing untagged internet + IPTV traffic over the same wire with this setup. It's also possible to do this with DD-WRT I believe but it's a very 'messy' setup. If you run a packet sniffer on PC1/2/HTPC, you're going to see a lot of traffic from the IPTV network spilling into your PC network.

I think UniFi will be available at my area by Q1 2011. Recently saw some people testing the box on the telephone poles and doing a quick check, another housing area near mine already is available.

Now, I don't know if I should go for the VIP10 or BIZ5. I do know that as soon as it is available, I'm going to apply for it.

VIP10 well I'm attracted to double the speed of a 5mbps, but thing is nobody knows when TM will implement the daily/monthly usage cap so I'll be disappointed if it is implemented in 2011 (which some rumors are saying). Apart from that, I don't need the TV channels.

BIZ5 is a safer bet as it is guaranteed to not have any usage cap but the speed is less by 2 times. Although I think BIZ5 should be good, but then downloads can be shorter by twice the amount of time. laugh.gif

Any suggestions/comments/insights?

Biz5 is good. More than enough for downloading (550kbps) and gaming. No throttling and upload and download speed always stable whether day or night.

Just got my vip10 installed just now. So far so good. I followed rizvanrp's guide to use the DIR615 as a bridge to my linksys router. Speed is awesome just that got fluctuations in response. need test longer to find out if its just luck or if theres a prob biggrin.gif

Hello, im a student residing in puchong area, we want to apply for unifi (6 of us)

is the VIP 10, enough for us or should we subscribe for the VIP 20

and if like 1 or 2 of them use pps/torrent will it affect everyone as well?

thanks
*
VIP 10 should be enough, but if u all r heavy downloader, better take biz5..., huehue

about the torrent, just use QoS to make sure other ppl still got bandwith when they r torrenting.., just make the bandwith open when there r less ppl using internet, (example : at my place, only 1 ppl normally online at 10 a.m till 7 p.m, so i set the bandwith fully available, even for torrent, but after that time, i set limited bandwith for torrent..., since everybody back home and start online already...)

I have read the front page of this thread but I couldn't find this particular concern. I have already installed unifi yesterday and they told me it's a separate line altogether (meaning a different phone no). I was wondering how I could add another telephone to the one they gave me and put it downstairs since I would like to cancel the previous phone no as it would just incur additional costs. Please help, thanks.

Hey guys, i just got a TP Link repeater to increase the signal strength of the wifi in my plc. The thing is, the guy at All IT Hypermart told me to turn off the Wifi Protection Service in my DIR 615. I cant seem to find it. Some help would be lovely. Merry Christmas! =)

PS; Nevermind, found it.

"turn off the Wifi Protection Service" it's a very bad thing to do, unless you are generous to share your internet with your neighborhoods..

I like pfsense a lot but as I'm doing a multi-home setup here.. pfsense can't handle dual pppoe connections, so i'll have to wait it out until they release 2.0 smile.gif at the mean time, i'll just live on with ClearOS thumbup.gif

A question. The additional cable charges are for cable length exceding 15 metres and 30 metres casing according to the broucher. Does this mean that once in my house, the first 15 metres or cat5e cables are free? Then what is the 30 metres casing for?

So lets say my TV is downstairs and my computer is upstairs, would it be better to go and buy the cat5e cables myself and pull it to my room, or should I just a pair of homeplugs? Wireless is not an option btw. Thanks in advance

Something Else,

The free 15 meters is their indoor fiber optics cable (white color)+ 30 meters casing . CAT 5e have to pay extra.

Better to buy the CAT 5e & DIY pull the cable to your ground floor TV. Homeplug is good if your house is using single phase fuse box.

Added on December 24, 2010, 9:45 pmNeed some suggestion on the router for unifi.
My current Linksys WRT54GL (DD-WRT) can't manage the traffic well on Unifi. Looking for more powerful router such as Asus RT-N16, Linksys E3000 or any suggestion. The router must be able to support DD-WRT / tomato Firmware.

Thanks

After browsing the previous threads regarding Unifi, there are still some details which are unclear to me:

1. Can we replace DIR-615 totally, in which a powerful router with or without DD-WRT manages the VLAN tagging and yet able to enjoy IPTV?
2. If DIR-615 could not be replaced, according to rizvarp, can I use other managed switch besides RB250GS and Mikrotik?
3. If I wish to have dual setup, what router is recommended?
4. I would like to add a NAS (for example, DS111), how would my setup be?

Newbie here, hope could learn something over here, having an appointment with the installers on 31st December 2010. Thanks in advance!

I am using mikroTik RB750G replacing DLink-615. No issue with IPTV and working perfectly.

2. If DIR-615 could not be replaced, according to rizvarp, can I use other managed switch besides RB250GS and Mikrotik?

Refer No. 1.

3. If I wish to have dual setup, what router is recommended?

What do u mean by dual set up?

4. I would like to add a NAS (for example, DS111), how would my setup be?

I have 2 Synology attached to the RB750G without any issues.

Newbie here, hope could learn something over here, having an appointment with the installers on 31st December 2010. Thanks in advance!

don't turn it off, the repeater can handle WPA2 in my experience, so no need to turn it off, simply set the repeater security based on ur security on DIR 615....

here's the screenshot, i also use TP-Link repeater,

just change the part that i blur with ur security key, then good to go already :

Need help, my wireless is much faster than LAN Cable connected to the wifi-router supplied by unifi.

Notebook <-> Wifi router (orange/white DIR-615)

Wired: Average download around 50kbps
Wireless: Average download around 500 - 600kbps

Any idea? hmm.gif
