Hi there wiraone, it has been a long time smile.gif

I use Dlink Green switch on top of the router to divert the line. Interestingly, I can connect a switch between the IPTV unit and the router, meaning to say by doing so, the IPTV unit can be installed at any ethernet end from the switch itself. Here's how I do it :

Original configuration:> ------[fibrehome/ZTE unit]------[DIR615]-------[IPTV set top box]-----TV
user posted image

Add a switch:> ------[fibrehome/ZTE unit]------[DIR615]------[Switch]---[IPTV set top box]-----TV
user posted image

The advantage of adding switch is that the IPTV Set Top unit can be detached and move to any of the networked room.

I even tried to add another switch (bought one just to try on) at the set top box end, but it fail to detect the IPTV signal.

Well, I would love the double switch configuration as I only have ONE Cat5e cable in betw my router and HTPC & LCD end. So if it works, I won't have to swap the ethernet cable whenever I want to watch TV with HTPC or with the IPTV.

What calvin suggested should work. It's pretty easy to connect pfsense to the BTU without having a bridge in between. During the initial boot you'll be asked to define the WAN/LAN interfaces and VLANs.. so you just setup a VLAN interface and you'll still have your physical interface along with a brand new VLAN interface. Set the VLAN as the WAN interface and you're good to go. With pfsense it's also possible to use a system with only 1 physical NIC as a router (provided you wire it into a basic switch) as you'll be able to push tagged and untagged traffic over the same wire.

good idea, im new to pfsense, upgrading from ipcop...will explore pfsense more

Yes, they will charge if there are extra work...such as fiber optics go thru the roof. Extra CAT5e cables usually RM10 / 1 meter. Extra charges sometime can go up to RM700 +++..Better nego with them else DIY.

Not really duit kopi. Telekom instruct them to do the easy installation with minimum drilling. Go up the roof, hide the cables, Indoor fiber optics more than 15 meters..etc is extra charges.

Some contractor even dare to ask for duit kopi (RM200) even tho it is an easy installation...This i don't pay

As for my house, they only need to do:
1, Outdoor termination
2, Indoor termination (Cable installation done by me in less then 10 mins)
3, Configure the Modem, D-Link router & IP TV (House network CAT5e Cable already done 1 week before Unifi Installation)

All this took them 2 hrs !! slow like snail...

Go up the roof is easy, just that if they crash the roof..etc who going to be responsible? you can call Unifi sales they will inform you that their contractor will charge customer for the extra service.

I have assist 5 of my friends to register & install unifi. I will know if they want "duit kopi" smile.gif

The worst that i encountered is,
Out door termination behind the house going up to the roof to the front master bedroom (Modem, d-link router).
From master bedroom Cat5e (our own) pull to ground floor living room IPTV
Total RM700 !! rclxub.gif
Manage to nego until RM250 rclxms.gif

yes i understand it.... but they use the dangerous reason for extra charge... but actually not really dangerous at all... the installation fee 200 we paid is not include climb roof? sweat.gif and the 1m = rm10 cat5e expensive like hell...

Perhaps when TM called later for feedback, you can tell the TM about the extra charges. If it is valid then its ok. But if they charge extra out of the ordinary hopefully TM will get the feedback and blacklist the contractor.

TM guy called me up on the day, during the service to find out if the contractor did arrive, and after the installation too. Nowadays their feedback service is much better I think.

For those who wants to wire up the house, I do recommend to use Cat6 once and for all.

My networking knowledge is not good but the above config won't work. Plain switch won't do routing .. the DIR615 splits the IPTV traffics .. adding a switch won't help to combine and split the traffics back to iptv and internet .. if you're worried of running long cables, I guess you could try that powerline thingy.. no idea if it works but some say it works okay for them. As for me .. I've never switch on my IPTV after they started charging for "premium" channels .. I've Astro and that should be good enough.
