Do they mention the period that you have to wait before you can reapply?

According to my letter, it says I may apply in one year's time.

900SGD could have gotten you a really decent single room with aircond with utilities included. It could be cheaper if the place is a lil' further from financial district, say Tampines/Bedok (20 minutes of green line MRT)
*
Yeah, was thinking of that too.

Am still on the lookout so any rooms to let, please do leave a PM. smile.gif

Actually I'm not, maybe does. I'm just stating the options he has, based on his maximum budget. FYI my room cost 400sgd.

You guys are missing the point.

The % is important, but it is not the point. The % is merely a fraction of the base.

Go down that road some, even the increment's not the point. It's only the additional.

The point is how much you take home at the end of the day.

Think about it... you earn $3K a month and get a 10% increment. What do you take home next month? $3300.

Let's say... I earn $10K a month and get a 1% increment. What do I take home next month? $10100. I still earn more than 3X what you earn, every month, every year, and I earned 3X more than you last year as well (before the increment) and probably the years before that too. And this goes on until you catch up... which might take quite a few years or for 85% of the population, it'll never happen. Even if my pay is stagnant, I'm still way better off than you are now, in the past and in the future.

And don't forget the allowances. If you earn $10K a month, I'm willing to bet that you'd probably have $1-3K a month in allowances for car, entertainment, housing etc. And you might get club membership, incentive/bonus stock and stock options.

World's a little different when you're higher up.

I would like to address this to those in the accounting field who moved to Sg to work.

"Does your choice of accounting professional qualification make any difference in whether you got a job in Singapore?"

I'm currently thinking of which qualification I would like to do (CPA/ICAA). ICAA is harder and is said to be more prestigious, while CPA is easier so less likely to fail.

I'm a degree holder, currently working in Malaysia in an accounting firm, looking to move to SG after 5 years of work experience. And I'd like to maximise my chances of getting a job there, so that's why I'm asking all you experienced people out there for advice. smile.gif

If MNC, professional qualifications are nice to have, but not compulsory. Especially for regional jobs and commercial facing roles.

If accounting firms, they will support any qualification you take/have, with a preference for ISCPA (SG CPA).

Local listed firms have a strong preference for ISCPA, especially in controller or investor facing roles. If you have little relevant or quality experience, this is important. If you do, this becomes much less so.

In conclusion, you're saying that ICPAS beats out CPA Australia and Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia?

I'm thinking of taking CPA/ICAA now, and then only go to Singapore in 5 years with 5 years work experience and a qualification. I looked up ICPAS, and I don't think I can take it outside SG, although with either CPA or ICAA I can apply to be a provisional member.

Furthermore, I'm in tax, so there are limited opportunities to move out of this field, and if I go to SG, I'll need to learn the Singapore tax laws. Hence my wish to maximise myself in order to have a bigger chance of moving there successfully.

I am willing to trade off any two digit increment for >=$10k fix montly salary.

The 4 months bonus is more than 8 months bonus for salary =< $5k.

mine:
yr:>5
electronic
bn: 5~7 (by year end)
ic: single digit (july)

Indeed. Just sharing my dad's experience, he says that increments tend to slow down once you hit a certain age band, (especially if you aren't in a sufficiently senior role).
Increments become less and in exchange, given alternative forms of remuneration, he was given shares in the company's stocks (US listed co)

At that level, international mobility (and the fantastic allowances that come along with it) is just a matter of volunteering for projects

I agree. Once you hit 5 figures,.. the focus tends to switch to other stuff like allowances and non-cash emoluments. Increments are typically smaller considerations although highly rated performers will still get a good cash increments in the form of regular promotions.

Added on April 6, 2011, 8:34 pmJust opened a CIMB bank a/c at Knightsbridge, Orchard Road. Flat US$10 + S$10 fees to bank in a US$ cheque drawn on a US bank. EVERY other bank charges 0.125% commission + S$10-30 fees to clear such US$ cheques into a S$ a/c. The account also pays 0.8% interest (highest in SG that I know of) plus free chequebook. Branch operating hours is 10am-10pm (counter services until 8pm)... good for office workers. Good looking staff too smile.gif

QUOTE(Mackiddo @ Apr 6 2011, 05:18 AM)
Hi all,

Just got my PR approved few weeks ago

Have a few questions hope someone could answer me

1) When you converting license from MY license to Sg license, must go take letter from JPJ. I heard if you go to Johor JPJ, they will cut your MY license before giving you the letter? Other state JPJ they do not cut your license and just give you the letter. Is that right?

yup. JPJ will not cut. They will issue the letter and inside the letter they will ask LTA to cut.

2) According to SG police traffic/driving school, if you come to Singapore to work a period of time then only you get your MY license, you cannot convert already and you must retake the whole SG license which cost a lot of money. Anyone can advise?

Yes. you have to retake the whole test.

3) Those surgery/disease insurance that use your CPF to pay a portion of the sum. Is it advisable to get those? Any recommendation which one good? Heard NTUC not bad...

try get a hospitalization plan and critical illness plan

*
Hi Mackiddo thanks for your reply.

So in the end no matter what the MY license will be cut? Anyway to not cut the MY license because in certain state like Johor ....sometime see luck but heard of cases police don;t accept Singapore license...so if you get caught and you don't have MY license you are considered driving without license

For no 2, anyway to go around this...it is damn expensive and I believe alot of people is in this situation but not much people talk about this.....

Congratulations on successfully getting PR status, especially considering the current situation which involves general election.

A few of my colleagues applications didn't make it through, so was mine. Some are rejected based on very absurd reasons. So I'm kinda curious how do you get through. I hope you dont mind sharing some of your details here, so that other forum members could benefit from it. Many thanks.
1. How long have you been working and residing in sg?
2. What pass are you holding? Which industry are you from?
3. What's your highest education level obtained? From which university?
4. Is this your first attempt of getting PR?

Again, your help is very much appreciated.
*
1. almost 8 years already
2. EP ..working IT
3. degree from UK
4. 2nd time passed.

I think gotta write more how you have contributed to Singapore...like achievement part you can put charity or what you have done to work place because last time I was based in govertment school so easier to say what you have done ..

When I went to apply 2nd time, it was very little people at ICA office compared to first time ..so don;t know is it because of that

Also the difference from 1st time and 2nd time was I stayed in SG during the time fo 2nd application while first I was staying at JB

Hope those helps thumbup.gif

Congratulations to all 3 who got their performance appraisals! smile.gif

Been reading this thread but not very frequent. What attracts me most is the adversity and all walks of life moving into sg with their clear objective to work there. I'm currently working in an MNC in the IT Industry. thinking of expanding my career in sg. Graduated last year and have been with the co. for close to 7mnths. Like the environment, culture, benefits, salary and experience. Just got my increment as well. Not bad. (Co. revenue one of the highest this year).

Working in the finance dep. & currently overseeing ethics & compliance of the site and exposed to various forms of risk mitigation strategies. Do have strong interest in exploring sg as i belive sg has more to offer in terms of the industry growth rate and career opp.

Forummers pls advice on the prospects if I decide to move to Sg to work smile.gif thnks!
