QUOTE(shoograd @ Mar 26 2011, 01:34 AM) I have spent the last 6 years living outside my hometown/country, and I personally think that working in another country expands your horizon and puts you out of your circle of comfort. Learning to adapt in new, alien environments helps you develop into a more mature individual. Just my two cents, but I think that this should be seen as a pro and not a con. totally agree with that.To me, home is home, of course it's nice to be at home but people will never improved if they choose to stay in their comfort zones. Anyway, I'd really recommend people to go out from malaysia, maybe work in some other countries, gain exposures, international networks and experiences. These are definitely be really helpful in long run, regardless of your future choice of coming home or stay abroad. |

QUOTE(seantang @ Mar 26 2011, 03:29 PM) A lot of folks ask " is $xxxx enough to survive?" without bothering to explain what 'survival' means to them. To me, to survive means not to die. With $60 a month, you will not die. That's what I figures too. People should say live comfortably, but again this is a very subjective and varies from person to person |

10% is a lot. Most of the companies in singapore is giving single digit increment.
Anyway, people are always confused about the concept of salary increment and salary adjustment. |

QUOTE(alaskanbunny @ Mar 29 2011, 12:01 AM) The economy was really bad in 2009, but it bounced back in 2010. Generally a lot of companies in singapore were performing unexpectedly well in 2010, taking 2009 in comparison, which reflected in mass hiring and high revenue in Q3 onwards. Naturally, those companies would repay those that worked hard during recession but it does not have to be in rainfall increment. Most of them are being careful in current economic situation so giving out huge increment is definitely something they wouldn't do without deep consideration. A good annual bonus is more likely to happen. Anyway this is a very generalised speculation. Not every company can afford huge bonus/increment. I've heard from friends that get insignificant rewards, some have gotten big fat 8.5 months of bonus. This is very subjective, varies from companies, industries and etc etc. Of course not to forget the election is coming so someone has to look good on the newspaper |

QUOTE(L7Awesome @ Mar 30 2011, 04:56 PM) Hmm... it should be the other way. Money repatriate back to their respective country should be good for their country. However, I believe that if the country continue to lose skilled workers to another country, then less 'high-tech' foreign investor will want to go into that country. With that, it will cause the country to lose their competitive edge. Thus, more people will lose out and the country as a whole will lose out even with the money sent back. That's my theory... 15%? Are you earning 160K per year?Added on March 30, 2011, 4:59 pm I got taxed 15% the first year working here (less than 1/2 years). :-(. But I did gain back some tax deduction in Malaysia though since my pay is based on 1/2 year in Malaysia. CODE RATES OF TAX FOR YEAR OF ASSESSMENT 2011 Your chargeable income is the amount remaining after deducting from your assessable income the personal reliefs to which you are entitled. If you are a resident in Singapore, the rates of tax chargeable are as follows: "Chargeable Income" Rate Gross Tax Payable $ (%) $ On the first 20,000 0 0 On the next 10,000 3.5 350 On the first 30,000 350 On the next 10,000 5.5 550 On the first 40,000 900 On the next 40,000 8.5 3,400 On the first 80,000 4,300 On the next 80,000 14 11,200 On the first 160,000 15,500 On the next 160,000 17 27,200 On the first 320,000 42,700 Above 320,000 20 Source: http://www.iras.gov.sg/irasHome/page01.aspx?id=88 This post has been edited by yeahs4.1: Mar 30 2011, 10:26 PM |

QUOTE(k8118k @ Mar 31 2011, 06:37 PM) I'd say citibank, standard chartered and uob.Citibank SMRT works like a ezlink card with auto top up function. Also a lot of additional discounts for shopping. Uob has a lot discount for food. Standard chartered has cash rebate up to 5% |

QUOTE(jr` @ Mar 31 2011, 11:39 PM) True, so I'd assume only degree holder or higher with excellent academic qualification and achievements will be chosen to be PR. Not to mention, decent attitude and personality during the interview. However, the processing fee is $1500 and I wonder what are the chances of those who applied in getting it. what kinda processing fees are you talking about? |

indeed, very well said.
The truth is, many have lost faith in the desired change of Malaysia. Those that are still hanging on, most probably due to family/friends that are left behind. |

QUOTE(alaskanbunny @ Apr 5 2011, 08:04 AM) ahhh, that explains the increment... but bonus rather low dont you think? on the downstream or upstream?... Fiscal year starts at july. so that's pretty much explains. how many years of experience? industry? bonus seems good... but july? errr.... rather slow... semiconductor industry, 1.2 years experience. QUOTE(mcbarney666 @ Apr 5 2011, 11:17 AM) I've finally made the jump and will be working in Singapore. I start work on 23 May 2011. 900SGD could have gotten you a really decent single room with aircond with utilities included. It could be cheaper if the place is a lil' further from financial district, say Tampines/Bedok (20 minutes of green line MRT)Everything is in order except a place to stay. I'll be working at Raffles Place so I would like a room that is preferably on the green line. Max budget for room is 900SGD but has to be inclusive of internet, utilities and decently sized. But I won't rule out anything just yet so please let me know of any rooms. |

QUOTE(Andr3w @ Apr 6 2011, 12:21 AM) Congratulations on successfully getting PR status, especially considering the current situation which involves general election. A few of my colleagues applications didn't make it through, so was mine. Some are rejected based on very absurd reasons. So I'm kinda curious how do you get through. I hope you dont mind sharing some of your details here, so that other forum members could benefit from it. Many thanks. 1. How long have you been working and residing in sg? 2. What pass are you holding? Which industry are you from? 3. What's your highest education level obtained? From which university? 4. Is this your first attempt of getting PR? Again, your help is very much appreciated. |

QUOTE(darkages @ Apr 6 2011, 10:03 AM) Quick question, if 1st round PR application has been rejected, is there a cooling period? If so, how long? Do they mention the period that you have to wait before you can reapply? Forgot to add: How long do they take to revert after applying? According to my letter, it says I may apply in one year's time. |
