guys, for bonus the tax rate will be the same as the salary right? is there cpf for bonus?
*
The bonus will be added into your gross income for the year which will be stated in the IR8A form. This form will be provided to you from your company or whoever's paying your salary. For the CPF part I'm not too sure, but logically if the company do deducts the CPF from your bonus then YES the company should also contribute to your CPF as well

Here's the link to the income tax rates taken from IRAS's website for residents

Hi. I will be going to Singapore for a contract staff job at bank. Thinking to apply a PR straight away after i m there. Do u think the chance of me getting the PR is higher?
*
Right now.....for these few more months...I would say around 80% if not higher all the work permits/employment passes has been rejected. DONT EVEN THINK of applying PR. Even getting a work permit/EP would be considered lucky.

Dont forget when u do get a PR u will have to start contributing to CPF

usually i think you have to apply yourself.. they will just notify the mom and you have to go in person to apply...

approval in principle can be given before or after, usually after but there're cases where they apply for the candidate even before signing of the offer letter based on verbal agreement
*
Yes...normally MOM will have to approve it before the company offers u the offer letter. No point for them to give u the offer letter but MOM doesn't approves it.

I have tried a BKT at fusionopolis, i wouldn't say its anywhere near fantastic, but i think not too bad for a food court in office area.

Speaking of maggi goreng, just recently found a pretty good one (compared to other sg maggi goreng of course) in bishan st 11, near the wet market next to braddell road.

I miss the old school ccf with curry though, no idea why they dont have those here :S
*
There's 1 nice BKT...can considered as KL style and taste...around Woodlands area..i forgot exactly where liao.
p/s: its quite near the Woodlands checkpoint one

Hi,

May I know when applying SG PR, do we need to submit the photocopies of Birth Cert? If yes, may I know where can we get a certified translation copy of it?
*
If u do need to submit the photocopies of the Birt Cert...you will need to bring along the original..then when the officer attends to u, he will certify it..if i can remember correctly

QUOTE(mrportable @ Jan 26 2011, 04:18 PM)
hi guys, wanna know how do you guys feel about working in kranji, paya lebar and lavender?
I attended 3 interviews today and they all offer me the position but i told them i need to consider for couple of days. All of them offer almost the same salary. Now i only concern about the working place and living place. i quite concern about living environment and comfort like i am living in tampines i personally like it alot. so can you guys give comments for above three areas(and nearest district)? which do you think its best for living?
*
Well if u r working in kranji u can have the option to put up at JB if u would like...u will save alot of money from the room rentals. BUT u will have to pay with your TIME!!
It's either your TIME or MONEY...you can't have both.

Else if u wanna rent in spore for your workplace in kranji i think marsiling/yio chu kang all these further up north should be ok...the rental rates maybe around SGD450 IIANM...

Paya Lebar....well if u can find a room to stay around paya lebar/aljunied/macpherson that you will save time/cost on your MRT/bus fares...room rates i think maybe between SGD500-600.

Lavender....SUPER close to city center....but the room rates also sky high.....maybe easily SGD600-700 or even higher.

Mind you these rates are for 1 to a room....an its a common room....common room means no attached bathroom and its the normal size rooms. Expect to pay between SGD50-100 more for aircon. If you're work place is in Paya Lebar..than Tampines its still not too far away. Rates around Tampines will be also around SGD500...

In very general the common room rates are hovering around +-SGD500..unless you're talking about near city centre areas...

QUOTE(skon9 @ Jan 28 2011, 10:15 AM)
Hi guys, noticed that SGD is getting more and more higher, maybe be planning to ''cabut'' to Singapore. But I have few question in mind..

1) Any idea on cost of living in SG? Is it expensive?
2) How much is a room rental roughly cost per month?
3) How about the public transport? Is it convenience?

Thanks in advance smile.gif
*
1)Cost of living in SG would depends on very much each individual. For myself...I'll use around 1.2-1.5k monthly including room rental, broadband, mobile phone, meals, tranportation

2)Depends on the location and also what kind of room are u looking for. A common room, 1 to a room(not shared) will easily cost u SGD500

3)Public transport...SUPERB......buses/MRTs/cabs

Thats definitely cost alot in rental... sweat.gif  how about food cost?
*
Food cost......roughly......around SGD4-5 with drink per meal...so that SGD12 per day...x30 for a month that around <SGD400

As always the major CHUNK of your expenses goes to renting a room....unless u wanna shared renting a common room...or look for those utility/store rooms. But these rooms ARE SMALL!!

Yup......agreed...but too bad that my job requires me to be on 'standby'..meaning i need to fly anytime...plus my office is in Chai Chee...in between Kembangan/Bedok MRT stations...so staying in JB is pretty much out of the question.

u can't calculate it that way, you need to remember, even when u stay in Singapore, you will still need to leave ur house 1 hour early to take MRT and walk to ur office. so, for me, i only spend 30mins extra a day traveling, this is because i will go home late to escape the traffic jam since i will go to the company gym for 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours. Even when i am staying in SG, i still go to the gym, so for only 30 mins extra a day, i get to own a car, stay in a flat all by myself, and also get to enjoy better quality food (even JB chinese food is not up to standard with KL food, but JB's Malay food is the best i have eaten so far). i personally thinks that it worth it.

i think ur work place cannot be in Changi or somewhere far. even ur office in CBD is not convenient already. my office in in Yio Chu Kang, so its quite near to the northern side. from Woodlands checkpoint to my office, it only take 10-15 mins by bike. some people might say if rain, then you are in trouble this and that. so far, i only encounter rain 4 time from november until now (november to early feb is rainy season). Even it rains everyday, normally the rain will start somewhere around 10am-4pm. so it won't cause me trouble coz by the time i want to go home, the rain already stop. and i can use rain coat also what, if the rain is really heavy, then just drive in la, we got 10 VEP free days for our cars ma.
*
You can still drive in if you're still on EP/S-pass or whatever working pass....but once PR...sorry....u have to drive a singapore registered vehicle already

Spot on man. At first I did not realise this and was dying to come to SG like most people, lured by higher income, way of life, etc but I am begining to regret it now that I'm in SG. SG is always crowded irregardless of time. Try taking the mrt or going out for lunch/dinner and chances are you have to wait even in the food court coz limited space/seats. Cost of daily necessities are indeed cheaper than M'sia but if you factor in yr rent, utilities and other expenses, it would amount to be the same as KL. There is virtually zero chance of you owning HDB or condo before you hit 35 if you are a salaried person. (unless you come from rich family or are running a business). The working hours are longer in SG compared to M'sia and the kiasuism of people in work sometimes hamper the greater good of the company. (Everybody here only thinks of covering their @$$ instead of what's best for the co) While cars are technically cheaper than in Msia, dollar to dollar, the cost of maintaining the car is way higher, especially if you work in the CBD. SO if you're single, young and earning <SGD5000 like me, I suggest you to REALLY reconsider your decision. The only benefit of SG is for family people who are already senior mgmt with decent earning power (at least >SGD10K) who craves better education for their children, security and a better environment for their family. But if you're single and not settled down yet with earning <SGD5000 again consider Wisely. M'sia ain't that bad after all
*
Well I don't really agree......it would depends on your current 'commitment' in malaysia...eg housing loan/car loan n so on...for me...I'm just earning slightly above SGD5k....i get to save a heck lot.....easily SGD2.5k per month.....that's because i dont really have any loans/mortgages.....just monthly allowances to my parents back home in kl....which is around SGD600++ n I still get to save that amount stated.

Seriously, the public transport is good enough.....

My ex-colleagues...1 a PR...just finalize his re-sale HDB.......another Local sporean will be getting his keys in a year or 2... both of them EARNS half of SGD5000...n both doesnt come from well to do families/background....both of them just hitting 30s only!!!

if i ride motorcycle in sg, do i need 2 pay for ERP like all other drivers?
*
ERPs are like tolled roads in malaysia.....and its only chargeable at certain timings.....n diff timings will have different rates...
but if u do drive a foreign vehicle.....u will be require to pay for the VEP(Vehicle entry permit) also depending on timings..its not payable on weekends.

Refer to this
http://www.lta.gov.sg/motoring_matters/mot...uide_permit.htm

For the ERP charges for foreign vehicles...its a flat SGD5 per day.....doesnt matter how many gantries u pass thru in that day

Calculator for the charges VEP/ERP n etc

http://www.lta.gov.sg/motoring_matters/Cal...oll_ERP_VEP.htm

But you will get 10 free VEPs per year....i think....

For Singapore registered vehicles...u will need to pay the ERP as stated accordingly using a cash card.......

that is only applicable to cars. for motorcycles, you need to install the IU device (S$155+) if u wanna go through any ERP. if not, every gantry you pass through without the IU device will be charge S$70 fines. this is because there are a lot of motorcycles going in to SG daily (I am 1 of them) and SG gov is forcing foreign bikes to install that thing. trust me, if u want to use a foreign bike in SG, better install it, or else there is a lot of stuff u can't do. like going to the city, going into shopping malls car park etc etc.

oh yes...forgot about the 2 wheelers...

QUOTE(Gaultier @ Feb 23 2011, 10:36 PM)
Hi i am new here. I have been following this singapore thread for sometime now.Hope everything is fine with you guys.

I will be starting my job in May 2011. I plan to get a used car as my job requires to travel and also for convinience sake. Car allowance, ERP and parking provided/claimable.

Just want to ask, what do i ( foreigner) need to produce in order for me to secure a loan? the usual payslip and bank statement? I heard need a gurantor. If this is true, i dont think anyone would wanna be gurantor for me.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.
*
My guess is that u will be driving a spore registered vehicle?..if that's true then u will need to convert your driving license....specifically for malaysian driving license holder....u will need to get a paper from JPJ, saying that u wanna convert to Spore driving license...then head to those driving schools and apply to sit for the BTT(Basic theory test) once pass....u can apply for it on the spot....plus there's no expiry date for the spore driving license..i'm having a Spore PR that is...not sure if this applies to EP/S-Pass/Work Permits...

For the rest..i'm not sure..

what about International license? If i convert my msian license, can i still drive in msia or i need to re take all over again when i moved back to msia?
As for spore side, you mean just sit for the theory without any practical? then it should be a breeze, i guess.
*
International driving license shouldn't be a problem.....here the confusing part after converting msian driving license to singapore driving license...i still do hold both country's driving license....when the msian driving license is about to expire...i think u can just go renew it at any post office...i just did mine about 2 weeks ago.

Yes u just sit for the 'undang-undang' version for singapore...but please...do buy yourself that theory book....

hey guys! anyone can suggest me. I will be working in Singapore soon, but I thinking of a way working in Singapore but stay at JB, travel daily through the 2nd bridge link. Is this worth? how's the expenses will have to be paid through the tolls into Singapore etc...
*
2nd link is expensive....on Malaysia side its RM6.60 at Tanjong Kupang..at Singapore side its SGD3.20 at Tuas...rates are for car

You will be better off taking the woodlands checkpoint.....if u intend to drive daily to work...it will be a 2 wheeler aka BIKE....that will make more sense...tolls in Singapore wise...once u drive a bike you'll have to install that IU n payment of tolls through cash card inserted into the IU
