Well it is cheap.... that is why it is suitable to be made as practice equipment
I see, a good investment for practice equipment.
Actually, I am more curious to see the difference in zoom and prime.
I think that larger aperture should give more bokeh than my 18-55mm.

i see. then i would recommend 35mm or 28mm for crop body 1.6 if you are into primes. Zoom then as most ppl recon, tammy 2.8 non vs or VC.
e.g.
50mm X 1.6 = 80mm
35mm X 1.6 = 56mm (almost what you see what u get view)
28mm X 1.6 = 44.8mm (can capture wide space in a cramp places)
using prime lens kinda difficult because u need to use your feet to zoom in and out. however, the quality is very good.
http://www.mylensdb.com/canon-ef-28mm-f2-8/http://www.mylensdb.com/canon-ef-35mm-f2/i think you should go and test out all these lens. as for you needs, i think 35mm F2 should be a great lens for you because it is light, 56mm view and reasonably cheap compared to 35mm F/1.4L =.=, great for travel.. etc.
I have the 18-55 and have no intention of upgrading.
I am only using 550D. No need to spend so much on lens.
I am not a photographer.
I think the shop will not entertain me if I go try these lenses, not that I dare too!
Plus, I really dont intend to spend much. The 35mm F/1.4L is 5K+++++!!

For your purpose, I reckon the 18-55 IS or the 18-135mm kit lens will be more useful for your stated purpose.
Reason being:
- 50mm lacks versatility for travel purpose. Shoot people (note singular) is ok but for buildings its too tight and you may need to compose by only framing a portion of the building only.
- 50mm is too way too tight to take pics of house deco unless you only wanna shoot small items or live in a huge mansion
- The AF is also too slow.. and hunts badly in low light for kids running around.
However:
The 50mm f1.8 could be useful for portrait shots (of which isolating the background could be useful) if your kid stays still.
Like ComradeZ said, the 50mm f1.8 is a great piece of practice equipment.. for play play and to learn.
Yes, I am sticking with the 18-55. The 50mm may not be versatile but it is the cheapest prime out there.
Thank you for the feedback.
