Dock = Kiba dock (requires Beryl).

Theme = (with Beryl) Emerald (comes with Beryl), Heliodor (allows use of GNOME Metacity themes with Beryl), Aquamarine (like Heliodor but for use with KDE themes); themes can be found here (gnome-look.org) -- (w/o Beryl) search for Metacity themes at the link above...

The other stuff = gdesklets (uses python - eats up more mem, easier to config), adesklets (far faster, uses less memory, harder to config), rainlender lite (available for linux), conky (hard to config, esp. with Beryl).

Good luck!

You're trying to access the computer's disks through the liveCD? I haven't really tried to do that before, but I don't really think it's possible (correct me if I'm wrong)...

But about not being able to modify the external, that's normal. I take your friend's external HDD is formatted with NTFS (the default Windows disk format). Ubuntu can only read NTFS formatted disk, no writing.

It CAN write to FAT32 formatted disks though... icon_rolleyes.gif

It's because you're probably using a faraway repository to update from... I'm using the Japanese ones, so they're kinda quick, there's probably Malaysian ones too if you really want them fast...

Steps below if you don't know how to do it...

type in the terminal window: gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

you'll get something like this:

## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-proposed main restricted universe multiverse

## MAJOR BUG FIX UPDATES produced after the final release
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy-updates main restricted universe multiverse

add the items I've bolded:

## Add comments (##) in front of any line to remove it from being checked.
## Use the following sources.list at your own risk.

deb http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://jp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu edgy main restricted universe multiverse

DON'T change anything else... Substitute my. for the jp. if you want to try the Malaysian servers.

Things should be faster, I hope... icon_rolleyes.gif

Good luck!

Well, torrenting is throttled, as usual (utorrent+wine here), and I can only reach above 30kbps if I'm lucky... sweat.gif

I don't use synaptic though, as I like the command line better (using aptitude), and download speeds are generally good (as par my Dapper Drake before this - around 15-30kbps mostly) unless the Japan servers are unreachable (which happens sometimes)... But now that you've mentioned it, I do recall Malaysian servers to be a little bit slower in terms of update downloads... Dunno why... sweat.gif

And there's an update to Synaptic out, I just installed it a coupla minutes ago... Dunno, but it might help... icon_rolleyes.gif

Hmm.. Helix Live CD does the job. I forgot to bring my CD to campus and I got files locked in Uni comp.. So DL-ed Ubuntu only to find it not being able to check the main partition...

Guess from what you'd say Ubuntu can't do it.

Thanks.

I just started using Ubuntu not too long back (6.06), I everything about it's better than Windows AFAIK, except for one thing.

I noticed that my Internet keeps disconnecting whenever I download something that takes longer than 3-4 mins on Firefox to dl, i get disconnected with this error on plog:

Dec 19 14:04:43 localhost pppd[3622]: LCP terminated by peer
Dec 19 14:04:43 localhost pppd[3622]: Connection terminated.

I'm using a Aztech DSL600E and Streamyx for my modem/ISP.

add 202.188.0.133 & 202.188.1.5 to DNS.

Provided you've added the two numbers alankong just mentioned to the resolv.conf file, it's probably ubuntu rewriting the DNS numbers again... I assume you guys set up the Streamyx connection using pppoeconf... It does that sometimes, the easiest way I know of (seems an ugly hack to some, but works for me) is to reset the write permissions of the resolv.conf file (located somewhere in the /etc/ dir) so that nobody (yourself and "root" included) would be able to rewrite the file... icon_rolleyes.gif

This (supposedly) keeps your dns settings, smooth sailing afterwards... smile.gif

There's also the long winded way of doing this, but I forgot how... sweat.gif

If you're using a router, there should be no problem with DNS if you are running with DHCP.
Try doing host -v www.google.com and see if it's being resolved.
Or try to do dig www.google.com and see.

I installed Ubuntu 6.10 on VMWare Workstation. Then I had to install VMWare Tools but when I tried to, it says I am not in root, I dont have the super privileges. How do I become the root user? Or admin users?

When I was installing my Ubuntu from Live CD, it only prompt me for my name-desktop. Is my root account "name-desktop" and "password"?
