My QNAP TS-509 Pro is using 5 x 1tb Western Digital RE3 enterprise raid drives in EXT4 RAID5. This was my first nas, and i may have jumped the gun when getting the expensive enterprise drives.

I recently acquired a new QNAP TS-659 Pro with Atom 1.8 GHZ dual core cpu. It has 4 x 2tb Samsung F3 desktop drives in EXT4 raid5. They work perfectly fine with no errors. This time around after careful study, i got these 2tb desktop drives which work fine in raid. Why pay for expensive 1tb when you can get cheap 2tb that work fine in raid ?

So now i just turn off my 509 since i use that for backup. The 659 is on 24/7 as my webserver, media storage etc nod.gif

If your getting drives i recommend the Samsung F3 2tb for best value/performance. There is a newer Samsung F4 2tb just came out this month, however it is using the new 4k sector advance format. If you want to go down that route, investigate whether your NAS supports 4k sector drive or will it degrade your performance.

My preference is QNAP, so i would recommend 4 bay minimum if you want to get QNAP so you can do raid 5 or raid 6. I recommend raid5 since the performance penalty isn't as high as raid6.

PS: Remember with good internet you must have good storage, AND A backup laugh.gif

Got the rb250 this afternoon. 8 pm, the whole thing was up. Follow http://unifi.athena.my/index.php?option=co...id=55&Itemid=67 to the LETTER and you will have NO PROBLEMS. REMEMBER upgrade firmware to 1.2.

I checked speedtest and ping test and everything checks out.

But when I surf (maybe it's me), I feel it's abit slower than the stupid DIR615 configuration. - i completely dump the DIR 615. Its now BTU -->RB250GS--> Asus N16 --> Cisco AP 1225G --> PC.

Things that I might do if I am TU LAN

1.replace the Asus N16 with a Cisco 26xx (the 2611 with FREE IOS) for establishing PPPOE connection
2. replace the Asus N16 with a Cisco VLAN Manageable switch - i know the 37xx does it, but it cost a BOMB....any suggestion people? for .500 tagging and un tagging.

Utorrent (MAC) is now at 1881 kb/s - not too bad smile.gif - i am on VIP20

a big thanks to KLSEET!!!!

Check the Uplink Speed in the QoS tab, put in a high manual Uplink Speed (like 1000000 Kbps). It solved my speed problem on my N16.

Bro thanks for guiding me. notworthy.gif I will take you as my sifu.
Haha easy to have experienced ppl like to guide me along. biggrin.gif
I think I have gone the wrong way as I am using mostly green drives now.
Is high performance drive a must for setting raid NAS? Do I have to change them to performance drive like yours?

OT: One of my fren failed to stream media via his home plug to the network media player. What home plug do you use?

Wah bro, your setup quite complicated la... may i know what's that Cisco AP doing? N16 can be AP also right?
typo...it's a cisco 1252g dual radios. N16 radios are turned off, so it's a ethernet PPPOE dialer/router. the 1252 are a gem. does not saturate when i load her with 720p materials (using PLEX), most wireless ap i tried just saturate when 720p are loaded but not with this baby. 1080 materials are still a no-no sad.gif....still need a CAT5e cables - i am not sure whether I wanna wire my home with cat5e...maybe...just maybe....

any ideas to stream 1080 wirelessly?

Moogle Stiltzkin - I am also quite interested in this home plug ethernet, can you stream 1080p through it without saturation? Does it work over a 3 phase wiring scheme? Purchase from? hehehe

thanks for your forthcoming answers.

Huh, get a N16 just for the PPPoE+router and a Cisco for AP .... sweat.gif

Honestly, I dare not think about streaming 720P wirelessly, not to mention 1080P ... sweat.gif sweat.gif

Anywhere, I'll lay Cat6 in my house soon for both network purpose & HDMI transmission over LAN brows.gif

The samsung 2tb f3 drives i use are 5400 rpm. But they perform quite well but uses less watts, makes less noise and heat; and price/performance is the best nod.gif

NAS is mostly storage so doesn't have to be such a high end drive. Must also consider ownership costs like how much watts it uses.

Of course better drive is always good, but desktop vs nas, desktop you will notice the difference more since you run your games, and applications so access speed is important. For desktop a SSD for your operating system is a huge benefit. For NAS only if you run a server that requires access from many simultaneous connections, yes SSD is great, but SSD is very expensive and the capacities are very small.

For NAS when you say play a music file to stream, the hard drive spins up. So the access time also matters here. Also the transfer speed on your LAN is partly due to your drive performance also. Better drive means you can expect better file transfer speed. For my Samsung i get between 60-110 MB/s which is pretty good for me nod.gif

I use Aztech HL280E Gigabit Homeplug, 1080i is flawless, not sure about 1080p. No problem with 3 phase wiring at my house, I can get connection at every sockets that I have tried. Bought it from allIT but it is rare to find the Gigabit one, more common is the 200 Mbps type.

no no doh.gif the speed im quoting is lan to lan speed between NAS and desktop pc.

The homeplug i have is an Aztech HL-109. So streaming is more dependent on the homeplug connection to the Popcorn Hour A100. The Popcorn Hour A100 may stutter a bit for some Hl5.1 mkv encoded videos :/ but that is most likely because of the outdated sigma chip. For streaming i think the speed is sufficient, but hard to test unless you transfer data between the NAS and the Popcorn Hour A100 which i don't because i don't have a hard drive installed on the popcorn hour.
