As for your 1st post you already slam your hammer in and we still reply you. Nevermind la low EQ will not understand others feeling.

I would approach like this.

1. Read up on the various traditions on Buddhism. Important to take note of the history.

2. Not everything you read about buddhism is true. There is something called too much faith (saddha) that makes a person believe just everything and anything about what other people tell you. Always remember buddha's advice to investigate all teachings first before you accept it as true.

3. Address your doubt  by asking question, preferably a teacher whom you may have confidence and affinity in.
You can start by reading this good good written by the late ven Dhammananda "what buddhists believe" - can google it FOC on the net.

4. Try to apply the teaching into your daily life, for example to reduce anger/hatred which is the most common problem we have in the world today.

5. Try to maintain the 5 precepts as good as possible - you won't go very wrong in this life if you follow the precepts.

6. If you can , learn some basic meditation like Metta (loving-kindness) and some form of vipassana, or anything that suits you that could calm your mind.
hmm... i think that's what I can think of for now.

may you be happy!

Much metta my friend. Thanks.

Actually it is a very logical religion ( Cause and Effect/Action and Reaction ) but need some reading. Most malaysian chinese, myself included, were brought up in a mixture of Taoist and Buddhist environment which I believe confuses us as we grow up on what is Buddhism.

As mentioned by soul2soul, google or get a copy of "What Buddhists Believe" by Dr. K. Sri Dhammanada (link > http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/whatbelieve.pdf ).

"How To Live Without Fear or Worry / Why Worry ?" also by Dr. K. Sri Dhammanada was my starting point more than 20 years ago as it was written in simple English. Those days no internet lah and being "banana" could not understand books written in chinese. Sorry can't find a PDF copy but you can get a copy from the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfileds KL. (If anyone has a PDF copy please provide the link. Thank you.)

This is a simple and wonderful book written in a uncomplicated way. It helped me understand more about life (and its problems that we all face along the way). Use it as a starting point, even if not for the religious aspect, as a guide to help you when you encounter problems/sadness.

For anything we want to learn we must start with "some" Foundation, no point questioning on more "advanced" topics like Nibbana, How to attain it, Do Buddhist believe in God ... as the answers might lead you to more questions. Just like how to give a concise reply to a question why some born Black hair, Brown hair, Yellow/Blonde or even white hair if the person asking has no knowledge of Biology/Science. One can give a general simple answer mother blonde, father blonde therefore child must be blonde but we know that is not always the case but to delve further the person asking might not understand.

I hope I don't come across as condescending but that is true in whatever we want to understand well. notworthy.gif

ps. For those who prefer to listen instead of read, pls go to > http://www.dhammaloka.org.au/downloads/ite...rahmavamso.html Scroll through the talks on any topics that you are interested in. Ajahn Brahm is a very interesting speaker who will put a smile on your face. He is also uncomplicated and logical.

Actually, that is a very good book to begin with in Buddhism. Would encourage you to read it first, it will give you a very good foundation in buddhism.

Ah.

My share that I find amazing:

I was chanting mantras (Prajna Paramita Hdraya Sutram, Manjusri, Great Compassion Mantra) during exams as you know. Then after a few days of doing it, a cricket came to my table. Would not leave. Walked around my notepad.

The next following day, a cicada came beneath my seat.

Another next day again, a moth with the size of my palm sitting directly beside my laptop.

Then I stopped chanting for the next few days, none came.

Hmm kind of weird but awesome lol.

no no no, this is your lazy you speaking. tongue.gif

do a retreat like a robot and come out and see how much easier it is to practice the dhamma. also see how all the bad things you did comes back to you full force when you sit, it's a very nice feedback loop.
yea, only once and it was goenka's. i didn't prepare well so the first few days were unnecessarily painful.
*
so how can you gurantee that you doing retreat is not to hide from your problems?

and if you come out of the retreat and you find that you offend more people etc whats the point? The whole point is so that you get to train your mind to not harm others wat. also you gib bad PR: peepur see see say u sot sot after retreat u suka ka?

i've done a prostration retreat before. 10k prostrations over 3 weeks. sakit but still ok. Really gave me time to change my way of thinking and seeing things..

in a way yes because you disassociate away from the type of thinking that allows the 'sins' to manifest.
