Actually it is a very logical religion ( Cause and Effect/Action and Reaction ) but need some reading. Most malaysian chinese, myself included, were brought up in a mixture of Taoist and Buddhist environment which I believe confuses us as we grow up on what is Buddhism. As mentioned by soul2soul, google or get a copy of "What Buddhists Believe" by Dr. K. Sri Dhammanada (link > http://www.buddhanet.net/pdf_file/whatbelieve.pdf ).
"How To Live Without Fear or Worry / Why Worry ?" also by Dr. K. Sri Dhammanada was my starting point more than 20 years ago as it was written in simple English. Those days no internet lah and being "banana" could not understand books written in chinese. Sorry can't find a PDF copy but you can get a copy from the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfileds KL. (If anyone has a PDF copy please provide the link. Thank you.)
This is a simple and wonderful book written in a uncomplicated way. It helped me understand more about life (and its problems that we all face along the way). Use it as a starting point, even if not for the religious aspect, as a guide to help you when you encounter problems/sadness.
For anything we want to learn we must start with "some" Foundation, no point questioning on more "advanced" topics like Nibbana, How to attain it, Do Buddhist believe in God ... as the answers might lead you to more questions. Just like how to give a concise reply to a question why some born Black hair, Brown hair, Yellow/Blonde or even white hair if the person asking has no knowledge of Biology/Science. One can give a general simple answer mother blonde, father blonde therefore child must be blonde but we know that is not always the case but to delve further the person asking might not understand.
I hope I don't come across as condescending but that is true in whatever we want to understand well.
ps. For those who prefer to listen instead of read, pls go to > http://www.dhammaloka.org.au/downloads/ite...rahmavamso.html Scroll through the talks on any topics that you are interested in. Ajahn Brahm is a very interesting speaker who will put a smile on your face. He is also uncomplicated and logical.
