The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.



Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names.The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

- Arsenal Boss Arsene Wenger is set to make an ambitious move for Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given or his Eastlands team mate Joe Hart to revamp his goalkeeping side.

City, who gave back-up keeper Stuart Taylor a new deal at the start of the week, are unlikely to keep both Given and Hart happy as only one will win the battle for the No.1 shirt.

If either Given or Hart are denied regular first team football, he is likely to quit the club – with the Gunners keen to sign an experienced goalkeeper after enduring problems with first choice Manuel Almunia and Fabianski last season.

Wenger has previously been linked with both keepers, as well as several shot stoppers on the continent, and will bring in a new number one for preseason training in Austria.

Fulhams’s Mark Schwarzer has been Wenger’s first choice, but the west londers are demanding £4m for the 37 year old which the Frenchman belives is excessive.

-Arsenal and Chelsea have all been handed a boost in their purported pursuits of German star Mesut
Ozil, after his club Werder Bremen, admitted they may have to sell the player if he does not sign a new contract.

The 21-year-old was one of the shinning lights of the World Cup finals but his contract is due to expire next summer and the Bundesliga outfit have hinted they would cash in on the £18 million rated midfielder should he decide not to sign an extension.

-Arsenal have joined the race for Ipswich starlet Connor Wickham by launching a bidding war with North London rivals Tottenham.

The Gunners have come forward with a bid of £7million to equal Tottenham’s offer with reports that Arsene Wenger is intent on bringing the 17-year old to Emirates Stadium.

Ipswich would be loathe to lose the England U17 star but may be forced to listen to offers to ease some

i actually think that hart or given would be a fantastic coup for wenger and arsenal. they're good, consistent, and in hart's case, young. they're already accustomed to the BPL and so don't need time to settle in. right now, we need proven quality in the GK department.. =)

We as arsenal fans should respect AW. Yes, we are not winning cups for several season. In his head, putting club in safe hands (debt free) is like winning thousands of world cup. That time, chance of winning EPL, CL is higher than now.

Kos will definitely be used as Vermy's partner... Chamakh is a bit unsure as Robin will undoubtedly be our first choice CF whenever fit, but since Robin's not around he'll very likely to be used in the centre during these preseason matches.
