The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

Arsenal and Birmingham City join vuvuzela ban
QUOTE
Arsenal and Birmingham City have followed the lead of Tottenham Hotspur and announced that the infamous vuvuzelas will not be welcome in their stadia.

Vuvuzelas were the source of heated debate during the World Cup in South Africa as the droning sound of the instruments became a familiar one throughout the tournament.

Tottenham announced on Monday that vuvuzelas would be banned from White Hart Lane and North London rivals Arsenal have taken the same step on Tuesday.

"Further to their hugely debated involvement at this summer's World Cup finals in South Africa, Arsenal Football Club has decided to forbid the use of vuvuzelas within Emirates Stadium with immediate effect," a club statement read. "This decision has been taken to ensure the enjoyment and safety of supporters on matchdays, which is of paramount importance to the club."

Birmingham City are the third Premier League club to ban the instruments. "Blues can confirm that supporters will not be allowed to bring vuvuzelas into St. Andrew's on matchdays," a statement on Birmingham's official website read.

"The club took into account feedback from both supporters and relevant bodies such as the Safety Advisory Committee and have made the decision on health and safety grounds. An overwhelming majority of Blues supporters said they didn't want vuvuzelas to be allowed at St Andrew's."

However, Blackpool have already confirmed that vuvuzelas will be welcome at Bloomfield Road as they embark on their debut Premier League campaign.

I think we had discussed before about Rosicky future in Arsenal. I only see him a reliable subs rather than a first eleven. It's the time for Walcott and Vela to prove their worth on the flanks, don't you think so?

QUOTE(liez @ Jul 24 2010, 07:39 PM)
but most of Arsenal's good attacking players are tall and big, i.e: Dennis Bergkamp, Van Persie, Henry, Pires

non arsenal tall great forward-van nistelrooy, forlan, drogba, torres...

although we can also see good small/short forward but its less likely if to compare with big and tall ones...

we can normally see those short but good attackers in Barcelona, a squad full of midgets.

messi-169cm
dani alves- 171cm
bojan-170cm
villa- 175cm
iniesta-170cm
Xavier Hernández -170cm
pedro-169cm

btw....why is henry in barcelona legend list??? is he that good in barcelona??? hmm.gif
*
Actually in modern football, we need different types of players in different positions.

Normally in the center positions, there are 2 players such as ST, CM, CD. With the football revolution, it is better to have both pacey and strong players. wink.gif

For flank-players such as fullbacks and wingers, pace is always the priority thus we always see shorter players.

Back to Arsenal, for center positions: ST (3 positions), CM (3 positions?), CD:
ST: RvP (short?), Bendtner (strong), Arshavin (short!)
CM: Fabregas (short), Diaby (strong), Song (strong)
CD: Verminator (short, but strong), Koscielny (1.86 m, strong?)

hmm.gif

As for Henry to be in Barca Legend list, I'm sure many Barca fans do not agree with it wink.gif

I really don't know but one thing I'm sure, Henry has "more" Arsenal DNA than the Barca's brows.gif

guys...I just knew that champion league badge and premier league badge don't normally sewed together in the same jersey...

then why in arsenal.com they let you choose both at the same time???

*
... because normal fans like you and I do not play in Premier League or Champions League sad.gif

I really don't want to get into this Fabregas-Barca saga. Just let the clubs and the players deal with it and announce the deal (ON or OFF).

Better make it quick cos the longer it drags, the worse it is to Arsenal... as compared to Barca, they have nothing to lose but everything to gain - even if the deal is off, at least they (the club and their players) get some publicity and headlines.

Hi guys, just back from Bangkok tongue.gif ... plus TM finally has some mercy on me and allow me to have my new streamyx installed after a month of complaining/yelling at them!

I'll skip Barca's love affair with Fabregas or Arsenal.

Looking at the squad we have, maybe a change back to 4-4-2 may do us good with Chamakh and RvP as potential partnership with Bendtner and Vela as standby. Arshavin, Rosicky, Nasri on left. Walcott, Eboue, Nasri on right.

kimhoong,

apply Unifi lor, Streamyx some more arr... tongue.gif

Chamakh & RvP ...okay (seeing Chamakh making an assist fight with Milan), Arshavin, Rosicky and Eboue..good already.. for Nasri i know his good but too many gentel lar... sesekali gentel no problem but too many also makes me  mad.gif

Unifi better meh? extra RM40 - I'm afraid if my housemate doesn't approve it sad.gif The unker in TM said Unifi only for first and second year students vmad.gif - and I believed him doh.gif

Back to Arsenal, I think RvP, Chamakh and Bendtner are center players (ST, FW or whatever role). Unless AW only field one of them a time, I think reverting to 4-4-2 is not a bad idea. BTW, I don't like seeing Bendtner on RW like last season.
