no midfield? everybody playing on the wings?
and fullback is the last line of defend?
the formation is weird.
*
That's how it was in very very very very old days.

A "full back" back then really meant you're playing at the back, and back only. As in fully at the back!

And the "centre half" were actually the midfielders, because the played in the centre and right at the mid point of the field, hence centre and half.

That's why in modern times as coaches become more tactically aware, the fullbacks got moved out to the left and right flanks. Hence, the right backs and left backs of this day and age are also known as "fullbacks".

The centrehalves, who were previously in midfield, got moved back to become the central defenders or centrebacks as we call them today. If you notice, there are some old school commentators who still call CBs as "centre half" because of the history behind it.

And I'm really not BS-ing you in anyway! nod.gif

If I'm not mistaken (this is based on playing Football Manager!) players aged below 21 can still play for the club and need not be registered.

So that mean Wilshere, Traore, Barazite, Eastmond, Manonne, Gibbs no need to register.

See? Youth has some advantages tongue.gif

Muslera shud be ok. I choose him over skeletonburg

Muslera = Great shot stopper, suspect at high balls.

Sounds familiar?

JET look huge!! Maybe he could be the reason why AW is not signing another striker.

Italy always had very good GKs in their national team. Those days, all 3 of their World Cup keepers were always top class, when they had Buffon, Peruzzi, Toldo, Pagliuca, etc within their ranks .

But 2/3 Italian keepers (that I recall) that have graced the prem didn't exactly cover themselves with glory. Matteo Sereni was a bit dodgy at Ipswich while Mess-summore Taibi... well... we all know that one.

Cudicini was the only one who looked half decent, but was very unlucky not to cement his No. 1 position at Chelsea.

I'm a bit skeptical with Marchetti. Dont know why. I have a slight preference for Stekelenburg. But similarly, I think we could do better than Schwarzer (who messed up worse than Marchetti at the World Cup).

Yep and he should be better than the clown Fabianski and more stellar than Al .

Besides , he's still fairly young and his peak is yet to come . We don't need a god tier keeper at the moment , just a solid and confident one is good enough .
*
The only reason why AW had Schwarzer in mind, is taking into account our backup keepers who may develop into super keepers.

Er... I'm of course refering to Manonne and Szc... Schez... That Polish kid.

Marchetti being a young-ish keeper (below 25 rite?) would definitely stiffle the growth of our youngsters. But judging from what we have seen, I'd say its worth a gamble to have faith in Schwarzer and the kids (of course assuming Schwarzer comes la).

Question is, will this gamble cost us trophies? And will Gooners be patient and wait till another batch of kids "come good"?

Between James and Scwarzer, I'd take Schwarzer... Lesser of two evils!

James is an excellant shot stopper but suspect on high balls, crosses and corners... Sound familiar?

38 for Schwarzer is still ok as he still can play for 2 seasons ... then sure can find another new goalie ...
*
You guys are missing the point about Schwarzer. The "new goalie" is already at our club and his name is Wojciech Szczesny.

The only reason AW is looking at a veteran keeper is because he sees something in the kid.

Like I said earlier, its a gamble to put faith in such a young keeper, but Casillas and Buffon were started for the First XI when they were 19-20.

Bringing in someone like Akinfeev, Joe Hart or even Marchetti (all in early to mid 20s) will stiffle the progress of Szczesny. Don't forget a top GK's career will span anywhere between 15-20 years.

The fee is probably the only reason why we haven't signed him yet.

Added on July 30, 2010, 4:41 pm... And most likely wont.

Looks like Real already wrapped up signing Sami Khedira.

Its frustrating that other clubs (who have dodgy finances) can wrap up deals super fast but we, on the other hand take eons to do it.

I read this on one of the Arsenal blogs yesterday - Everyone keeps saying Arsene this, Arsene that, but perhaps we are blaming the wrong person when it comes to signings. Wasn't Ivan Gazidis brought in to handle negotitations while AW concentrates on first team affairs? If AW says "I want X player or Y player" shouldn't it be Gazidis who goes out to sign said player?

Notice how we didn't have this problem when David Dein was on board? AW wanted Henry, we got Henry. AW wanted Pires, we got Pires. AW wanted Wiltord, we got Wiltord. AW wanted Reyes, we got Reyes.

Don't get me wrong, DD is still wrong on all acounts with regards to selling out, but you cannot deny the fact that the man had the knowledge, the power, the clout and the negotiation skills that we are so lacking today.

Its damn frustrating...

I thought Gibbs was our best player in the first half. You can't expect all crosses to hit the target all the time!

Koscielny looked very good indeed. So much has been said about his size, but he looks similar in size with Nesta. In HD tongue.gif

Chamakh got his goal, which was well taken. He's similar to Bendtner in terms of height but I think he's got a better touch and technique.

So far after one game, the two new signings look quite alright. Will look forward to seeing more of them to form a better judgement.

Nevertheless, I was a bit disappointed with two things we are famous for: -

1) Letting in goals from set piece
2) Not ruthless in front of goals

If we don't address this, its gonna be the same thing for us all over again.

But overall, the passing and touches looked fantastic and THANK HEAVENS THE ARSENAL IS BACK ON TV!!!

seriously his first shot looks like a pass to the keeper

We were rubbish when Theo moved to the middle. But we were the overall better side for majority of the game.
