Multi-bay USB harddisk enclosure or Network Storage (NAS). Anyone ever tried this? four 2T harddisks in one USB enclosure. Possible problems?

If your USB is USB 3.0 and you are not using RAID, it would be no different than using SATA. Even if you are using RAID, the performance penalty wouldn't be too terrible as USB 3.0 should be able to handle more than 300MB/s.

Request for an advanced replacement. They will charge your account. Send you a new hdd. Use the same box to send back your defective hdd. They will refund your credit card after receiving your defective hdd.

Few days ago,
I planning to RMA my WD studio so I called them regarding the advanced replacement.
They said is not available for malaysia. Only available at United States. hmm.gif
Anyway, is there any way beside using postage to WD Singapore because I checked the postage price will cost me more than RM80
due to I'm not on the door-to-door replacement coverage. sad.gif
btw, should I RMA my WD Green HDD 1TB because got one bad sector?

I RMA-ed my WD Black thru the retailer who sold me. Took about 2 to 3 weeks for a replacement.

You should RMA even if its one bad sector.

Computer hangs does not means hard disk problem, check your running programs to verify if that is the cause.
Try HiJackThis software to scans your running programs.
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

If you so sure that your running programs are not the issue, then download any SMART reader software (speedfan being one of it) to check if any SMART values hit warning sign.

The thing is I got only 1 ZoneAlarm security suite running and it is a lighter weight WinXP. Not win7. It takes like almost 3-4mins to boot the system until the HDD activity finally settle down. This is way slower than an average computer. doh.gif

Had you taken my suggestion? Talk about boot time, my previous Windows XP on a relative fast mid-range machine also slows down after couple of years without reinstall (reformat) so eventually the system is accumulated with junks and left-over from heavy usage.
Defrag might help a bit on the loading time but not much.

Post your full specifications so we can help you further.
Also post your HiJackThis result.

its an old laptop IBM thinkpad R50e,

Celeron M 1.5GHz
512MB RAM DDR 333MHz(256 build in + 256 module)
60GB 4200rpm model is ic25n060atmr04-0(showed in Device manager) I google I think its a hitachi drive.

I used winXp check for defragmentation, it is 9%, file fragment is 18% only. It is a fresh install a few months old only. I have my windows swap drive(virtual memory) on a diff partition(swap partition).

Logfile for hijack this.

those zzz I think is a product key i replaced it for censoring.

But despite all that I didnt think a 1.5GHz machine can be this slow given winXp are running fine on old system.

It may be people buying HDDs in fear of future HDD shortage caused by HDD manufacturing facilities in Thailand getting flooded. I was thinking about buying a 2TB spare myself, just in case I lose a HDD in the next nine or so months.

Your SpeedFan results appear to be fine. Your Reallocated Sector Count is still zero, indicating that you don't have bad sectors. It seems like you may have a software problem. Have you tried defragging your HDD?

2TB may be sufficient for a while, depending on how quickly you accumulate your files.

Assuming you are not using RAID or are using RAID-1, giving you 8 TB of capacity, it will take you 3 days to full format on USB 2.0. On USB 3.0, it may take you one day to do the same. smile.gif

trust me I did defrag, and I did it again just now, and it is still slow. I have another similar speed laptop Centrino 1.73GHz, a smaller 40GB HDD it is a miles stone faster than this silly IBM laptop.
