Yes, the Samsung 1TB F3 is suitable, with RAID1, if you prefer Western Digital, there's the Carviar Green 1TB which is much suitable using software RAID.
*
So, are you saying Western Digital Caviar Green over Samsung F3? And will there be any difference between hardware raid and software raid? Server is HP Proliant ML 110 G5.

QUOTE(ozak @ Sep 23 2011, 08:41 AM)
I using 4pcs 2TB F3 samsung for NAS raid. 1 down and replace with the same model. The HDD still can run just not good shape for raid.

For file server, NAS or cctv, get the lowest RPM spin possible. It last longer. You don't need speed for this kind of application.
*
What harddisk would be good for Raid then? And my file server is an office file server for 40+ users. So, do I need to put performance in mind as well? Server is HP Proliant ML 110th G5.

Please advise cause we need it soon. Capacity is either 1TB or 2TB. Thanks a lot. smile.gif

What is your LAN speed, 100 megabit/s or 1 gigabit/s? If your LAN is 100 megabit/s, it doesn't matter what harddisk you use as you will be bottlenecked to a slow ~12.5 megabyte/s.

For the bold part I think you have misunderstood what I trying to imply, so I was trying to tell you that Samsung F3 1TB is fine, you can hardware RAID it, but if you prefer Western Digital brand (some people like that) then you can go for the Carviar Green of which software RAID is a much preferred option.
If you need it in a hurry, I would suggest you go for software RAID instead, easier to setup and running.
If you need technical explanation on RAID then you should need more time to sit down and read articles which I don't think you can make it in time.
To summarize it, software RAID uses CPU and OS to maintain your RAID, and hardware RAID is a independent card (or chips such as ICH9R, ICH10R, etc.) of which consist of its own firmware and CPU to maintain the RAID for your machine, it has its pro and con which you can google all about it.

And what's your file server main purpose? 1) Video editing? 2) Or just plain file server which only stores some documents? 3) Do you utilize gigabit network?
If your answer to 1 and 3 is YES then by all means take Samsung F3 1TB (and can have hardware RAID), performance wise is almost double the Western Digital Carviar Green 1TB, cheaper as well.
If you only need the option 2, then just take any green hard disk, software RAID1 and you're good to go, with only 100Mbps network it does not even come close to quarter of the hard disk minimum speed.

Not exactly a hurry. The tech guys will be configuring the whole thing again. And yes it will be running Gigabit network. So, Samsung F3 should be a good choice? And by the way, is there 2TB for F3? website states only 1TB. hmm.gif

Thanks again. smile.gif

Unfortunately there's only 1TB 7,200rpm option available which is the still the F3.
If you need 2TB with that kind of performance, then WDC (Western Digital Corporation) Carviar Black 2TB is only way to go for now, this is the only performance hard disk at consumer price that offer great capacity and performance, with a price of course, RM450+, if you willing to spend that much.

Edit: There're already several 2TB at 7,200rpm (Seagate, Hitachi, etc.) but to my knowledge only WDC is listed in those price list.

This. People who don't understand that LUCK plays a major factor when it comes to hardware are either not pros or they know something that they're not sharing.

if a hdd already contain bad sectors,
the best thing you can do is try to Low Level Format (take long),
it could help sometimes, otherwise take the HDD to RMA cause some hdd carry 5 years warranty
