perhaps, you can invite others to share their thoughts and experience with their flash so you would have reviews from real time users.
then perhaps share pictures shot?

well we had flash diffuser discussion http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=369828

strangely no topic about flash. biggrin.gif

anyway my latest avatar was done using flash.

Canon EOS 550D with phottix trigger, flash is placed on the right side of the subject, with DIY snoot + tissue inside to diffuse the light. can't remember the flash power (i use 430EX II, manual).

The camera setting is at f/8 | 1/200 | ISO200 (but i PP the photo by brightening it)

i'm in support of this thread. biggrin.gif can consolidate all flash related stuff........... but since i'm not moderator of this section, we'll wait for them big boys to decide.

btw you missed out Sigma and Vivitar. tongue.gif among many other brands out there.

you could also list triggers, Phottix, Canon ST-E2 for Canon cameras, Pocket Wizards, Radio Popper. blbalbala..............

my favourite resource for understanding flash / science of light is at http://strobist.blogspot.com/ ......... though I should be making a habit of visiting it more often. tongue.gif

SB900 can become commander and slave
SB900 can recycle time is way faster than SB600
SB900 has never Interface

the downside is the size. very bulky

Hmm, i heard from one of my sifu saying that you should buy the best flash with your money ability. If you have the budget, just go for the better one. Not sure whether what he said is true or what. My first flash is Nissin Di622, have no budget to go for 580ex2 so just stay with nissin first.

they're taken using Nikon's CLS, using D80 built-in flash as commander mode, controlling 1 SB-600 fired from the ground level towards the subject and 1 Nissin di466 with lambency from the top, like a giant spotlight biggrin.gif

you wanna fire your flash wirelessly? you'll need a D80/90 at least cause it has commander mode. or else, you have to get a 3rd party wireless flash trigger.

bleh, i prefer buy what you need, not what you can afford.

Di622 ok what. you can buy a few of them and optically trigger.

why do you need 580EX II when 430EX II can do the job?

i agree here. if a cheaper albeit weaker flash suffices, why spend alot more for something which u dont necessarily need?

1st your composition needs working

2nd shooting food, you can point the flash to the behind the food, towards the sides perhaps. let it bounce to create highlights.

studio shoot food and restaurant shoot food uses same concept but at restaurant is a lot more challenging, i don't use flash........... even till today. cos flash annoy the crap out of people in restaurant, and draw too much attention. biggrin.gif

you Sony user, so you would be aware how bright can the F42 light the area at full power. biggrin.gif

same goes to Nikon SB600 and Canon 430EX II.

i use natural and man-made lights. biggrin.gif

should've come to my talk that day, i covered a bit.

i know i will get annoyed if a bunch of people firing their flash away in restaurant, get more flash bang than playing COD : MW2. so since i don't like it, i don't do to others.

you know la if you order 3 dishes, easily you take at least 5 shots for the food. since use flash, 1st one to see the out come, the rest to tune.

yes, point it away from the food.

this is a shot that's not PPed at all, other than resize and watermark.

I used 2 flash for this (actually 1 is enough la), just 1 on each side pointing upwards to white ceiling.

as you can the shot lacks highlights cos the lights come from the top.

flash photography is not just about where to place la.

it's about how to manipulate the light, eg diffuser, snoot, gabo, umbrella, softbox.

and distance, intensity, and where to use a light, where to use reflector.

then how about what color reflector to use? what gel to use? blablablbalbalab...........

So how to improve the shot ?

yeah. i feel that too. flash photography is about how the photographer manipulates light from the flash as well as his surroundings to create an image that would not have been achievable without such manipulation. tongue.gif my noob interpretation.

well normally the light from the flash should pretty much "hide" the flash itself already. smile.gif

i think to get a nice flash photo you should get the flash off camera!
if you mount on your camera, use it as bounce, home made diffuser etc...everyone knows that.

The key point is to get the flash off camera. the light from it will create a more 3D effect. has highlights and shadows. that it what makes a picture pop

interesting thread... good job mike

of coz, apart from shooting products and macros, the shadows created from keylights can give a strong impact in portrait shots

Hey, di466 can use as a slave to nikon's commander mode? Any probs with it? I currently have one sb600, might wanna look into purchasing cheaper flashes around for more CLS...

i am no expert on sony flash.
but it should be the pop up flash is used to trigger the flashgun and should not light your subject
but if you are near enough, then it'll still cast a bit of light on it

you can test if out also.
put your flash on the side of the subject. fire the flash and see it there light from 1 side and shadow on the other?
if the light is from front then it's lighted by both

good try. correct...... for 1 or few of it, but i donno which one. tongue.gif

basically i use 1x 430EX no diffusion, point towards ceiling and another white wall.

those photos that show LCD are more tricky, so i pointed the flash directly to the ceiling and did a few shots, changing angle until i get the LCD details.

Been using the Di622 for almost a week now...
A powerful flash it is... But i-TTL kinda sucks...

Anything besides that is great. Worth the money... thumbup.gif

careful of the STATED compatibility.

I also saw the Phottix Tetra site saying it compatible with my Sigma DG ST 500 but when I tested - it doesn't work.

Hey, Is it a direct flash from one speedlight wirelessly? I always wonder how did u all get such soft light from the flash? I do the same thing, I tend to get harsh flash light effect esp on ppl. Can this be achieved by attaching a diffuser or lowering the flash compo?

important parts, u must know how to handle the flash power.

lotsa way can do. first, install umbrella, softbox, diffuser or anything.
DIY tunnel light can makes ur light become more narrow.

careful with ur flash distance

and the last time, keep on trying. never give up rclxm9.gif

Hey, 100+ umbrella!?!? Isn't that cheap? I'm actually looking for a budget shoot through umbrella setup for my try-out SB-600 wireless. But so far, all also require 200++ and above for such setup. DG Color's a brand or a shop?

@melatonin I use the Aster and no complaints about it. I guess one key difference would be the Aster is less than an inch high, whereas the Tetra is 2inches+?

Personally for me Flexibounce works better than Stofen (only have experience with the original SB900 which is similar to Stofen). But my favorite at the moment still the Demb Flash Diffuser.

between demb flash & speedlight possible to take it for travel? too big ? as in bulky?
and also isnt demb flash need to adjust the position on the diffuser as well?

Dear sifus,

I have a Canon EOS 450D. Now contemplating to get a flash gun.

I was looking at Nissin DI622, bcos it's cheap. But one sifu told me it is not good enough and he's suggesting to get Canon 430EXII, which cost around RM1000+. rclxub.gif
Then someone suggesting Nissin DI866.

I am so indecisive now on which one to get. My budget was to get the DI622, but if it's not good enough, no point of buying it cheap, right?

Can some sifus here help me please? icon_question.gif Thank you! notworthy.gif

buy cheap and enjoy
no point slaving yourself and have to keep waiting coz no flash to use while saving for it.

just grab the di622 and use. find the limits of the flash then decide you need the upgrade or not

hey mike, congrat and good idea on flash thread.

btw, could you add "*discountinued" on the flash model which is discountinue, so it wont make some new comer trying to dig the market for model which is discoutinue, and put a footnote for discontinued model can only be found as 2nd hand.

btw, picture that is not excately shot by flash gun, or strobe light, but 'hot light' welcome or not? or just hotshoe flash allowed?

Di866 is a powerful flash (as in the distance it can lit up) but quote from a friend(nikon) who uses it "inconsistance" so u have to learn to use to use it in manual mode (troublesome)

there is a reason why people who used origin brand flash would recommend u to get the origins one. because they are just too reliable.

430EXII is good enough if u shoot casually, family and friends. unless u going for events(school/college/public) or wedding, its better to get the top model 580EXII.

Has anyone sucessfully triggered a Nissin Di622 (nikon mount) optically with a Canon 430exII mounted on a Canon camera?

The Nissin will only trigger if I use the built in flash but not with the 430exII. rclxub.gif

Hrmm... This thread doesn't cater to the dissemination of information regarding built-in flash? I think the built-in unit should be fully utilised before moving on to the external unit. (Sry for the tone, juz finished with my scientific blog post :-P)

Anyway, I've made my own version of the built-in / pop-up flash bouncer, using an orange juice carton.

All f/5.6, 1/60, ISO800, 55mm, flash compensation +1

More information on my blog here (sorry yea, the procedure really too long).

Do give comments and suggestions though. I wanna exhaust this option before 'graduating' to an external unit.

nice diffuser dude, the light seems to be diffused pretty well but i think the built-in flash does not have enough power compared to external unit? cause can see that it's quite underexposed with your diffuser on.

Yeah. F/5.6 ma. Juz done some more testing. It seems for normal shooting even F4 also ngam ngam only, ISO1600 summore. F2.8 still ok with ISO800. This thing is ok for gathering in restaurant la. Just an alternative for beginners to do something other than direct blast ma.

EDIT: LOL. Found out the thing i made was useless compared to a simple bounce card. I fail la... Haha

Does anyone have any experience in working with these flash triggers: iShoot Wireless Flash Trigger PT-04 CN
They seem to be like a PT-04 stuffed in a different mould.
Plus they're a damnside cheaper than the phottix tetra PT-04.

strobist is anything to do with 'recreate light' onto ur photo. even bounce flash mount on ur camera is consider strobist, just the most boring strobe method tongue.gif

just got my sb 900 and dont know how to use the modes. T_T
read the manual but my understanding power seems to be very low.

is there any links that can help me with this? already go to strobist, but i guess its for ameteur and above lol tongue.gif

btw, noob question, whats the different flash at 14mm and flash at 200mm? flash at 200mm will be more powerful than 14mm? ttl in sb 900 is like auto mode in camera isn't?

TTL is basically means auto smile.gif it does a pre-flash to detect the power required to balance the ev on the photo.

14mm is wide. and 200mm is snoot. if u shoot with a 18mm lens, and snoot the flash at 200mm... go try it, and learn the result wink.gif

yup yup~~ like vigneting,... so now u know how the 200mm zoom flash will show up in the picture of wide angle, that is how the flash will travel also when u set the flash zoom to auto, it will follow the length/shape of ur zoom lens. if u zoom to 200mm to shoot, the flash will zoom too so it wont waste its flash power to lit the corner, but focus in the middle wink.gif

since we're at it, if you guys have to recommend sticking with one light modifier, which one would it be? The softbox? Or a shoot-thru umbrella? Or a 5-in-1 reflector and use the translucent panel as a softbox/shoot-thru material?

Also, is there any place that gives out free gel samplers?

boyzone, most ring flash are tend for macro, if for portraiture, it depends, if u have bad iso body with F5.6 lens, u have to get pretty close for the ringflash to be effective. but if u have a great iso1600+F2.8 lens, i guess u can shoot as far as 3 meter away

I would recommend a softbox for a better lighting directing, besides it's more solid and would last longer than the umbrella setup.

Setup apply to all shoot. Using SB900 on vertical position, shoot straight to object, bare, manual.

Manual zoom also applied to SB900 to narrow down the light focus.

can I trigger a 430EX II with 550D built-in flash? Coz I only have 1 flash only
I looked through the manual and they only mention about using an external flash to trigger the slave flash only.

magiclover, sorry dont think it can be done, so far,... only 7D can trigger 580exII with pop up.

but i heard the 1D series can trigger other 580 flashes with an 580 attached as commander mode. not sure with 5D

hold the 'zoom' button for 3-5 sec and u will see the 'Wireless flash menu' try figure it out, smile.gif i still figuring how to trigger other 580 with a 580 mount on 450D... lol

nope, you need at least a 7D or the upcoming 60D to trigger that flash using camera body's built-in flash.
or
use one of the higher-end flash that can act as a master (e.g. 580 EX)
or
use the ST-E2 flash trigger
or
use a cheap radio trigger (e.g. yongnuo or octopus or whatchamacallit)
or
use super expensive radio trigger (e.g. pocket wizard)

biggrin.gif tadaaaaaa.

dual 430EX II triggered by 580EX II, mounted on a 350D.

Added on September 19, 2010, 3:45 amoh i must add - I've personally tested 7D / 60D / ST-E2 and 580EX II as master.

1. 7D's trigger options are fantastic, just like the 580EX II i would say. I didn't study in intricate detail but you get to set power ration and such. lovely.

2. 60D's trigger on the other hand, is like the ST-E2. Can't set power ratio to the groups (like say 1/64 for A, 1/16 for B) but you can adjust the power by going A:B with ratios like 8:1 to 1:1 to 1:8.

er, it's like that wan la. smile.gif the 580EX is the trigger and the 430EX II are slaves that get the signal to fire together.

in this case, the 580EX master mode is set to ON so it contributes along with the rest of the 2 for the exposure.

Added on September 19, 2010, 4:07 amoh btw, that shot I can't remember whether I set MASTER to ON or OFF but i think it's ON.

even if it was OFF, you'll see the master flash firing anyway but it'll be of a very weak light.

unless u mean the budget includes battery, charger, diffuser, umbrella, wireless trigger etc etc, then different story. but u should always question urself, will u always be using flash? if not, go for digieye, save some bucks by learning from cheaper flash lo.. tats what im doing bro =)

if u have money, grab a new 580exII

else, all other third party trigger is fine, phottix are good smile.gif

2000mAh last me about 600 shots with max of 400iso used. (if ur camera can go iso800, the power is half, means u can easily shoot till 1000 shots)

2000mAh or 2700mAh - it's just the amount of power stored on the cell.

No. goldfries is right.
The capacity does not directly affect the recycle rate.
Read this if you're still not convinced. tongue.gif

Could be the batteries then. hmm.gif

The type of battery determines the recycle rate (how fast the batteries can supply electricity to the device).
Actually the battery's internal resistance affects how fast the electrons can move in the battery.

sifus and pros, which one do u recommend and why. by umbrella i mean the shoot through type.
if my room is small, wil i still be able to get nice shoot without much fill lights using umbrella?
and any samples of pictures comparing umbrella and softbox? hehe... thanks in advance!

Michaelbyz23: shoot through have tendency to bounce back, with small room, it will bounce back and bounce around the ceiling etc, ur whole photo will bright up, u cant do shots like 'dramatic shadow'

you need to understand the difference between UMBRELLA and SOFTBOX.

their output is different.

UMBRELLA spreads the light, diffusing it but generally directionless.

SOFTBOX on the other hand is diffused directional light.

small room not an issue. depending on what effect you want, it could be as simple as bouncing off the ceiling / wall.

got got. suppose to write article on it but so long have been straying around with other articles.

put it in words la. i too Mr Potato container, cut open the closed end - kau tim, you get a snoot already. after that it depends how you want to modify

1. use straws / Corrugated board or whatever you call it to make it into honeycomb
2. stuff tissue to diffuse (close with Mr potato cap. tongue.gif)
3. #1 and #2 combined

if you feel happy, you can even add color gel (or color translucent paper) to change the lights. biggrin.gif (eg, put orange or whatever to to give warm light)

a snoot is to make the flash into a unidirectional beam of light. Basically anything that you can wrap around the flash head to make the output come out as a beam of unidirectional light will do. Cardboard, soft foam etc.

Wah goldfries even make honeycomb for it ah. Got anyplace can get free gel samplers besides the Rosco one from the internet?

u can control ur background light by increase shutter speed, or aperture to control amount of light (flash) to get into the sensor.

yes, umbrella can do directional lighting, by using bouncing (not shoot through) and at a certain angle, or say, u have to understand how light 'leaks' and goes. like abang goldfries said, u have to understand the umbrella itself.

for example:

yeah if you use umbrella that way then yes, it's directional.

instead of using 2, you can also use 1 + reflector for lesser light intensity.

yeah depends on what the fella doing la.

shooting even, some people use manual also mah. say you set ISO400 with 1/60 and f5.6 all the way. then fix the flash power also. some people do that.

you can use TTL also, no problem.

for studio shoot, i don't use TTL already.

if you were to equate to camera body P mode and M mode, I'd say it's pretty much like that. go read up on TTL and understand better what it is.

i'd get the TTL... just pay a little more for the flash to 'work' for u.... not u work for the flash. i know a lot ppl will say, use manual is more pro... to me, they are just pro wanna-be. TTL are design to make ur life easier, not harder.

of coz, studio shot are diff, as u have all the time to setup ur lighting and composition, doing it manual give more consistent result....

but in event or birthday party, or wedding, ur mind is so consume into taking photo, u wont have time to think what manual power to use... TTL FTW.

i've just being assign as the photographer for the event for my association

the only thing i need to set with non TTL flash is just the power, i'm getting a flash just for a event incase my lens is not fast enough, or the event is too dark at some time(eg. performance, talk)

as i already wanted a flash since long time ago.

currently i'm targetting the YongNuo 560 and the Nissin Di622.

i've check the Guide number of both nissin and yongnuo, and the result was as below

guide number:
Nissin - 44m(ISO100) 62m(ISO200)
Yongno - 33m(ISO100)

is that means the nissin is a stronger flash? 33m is already sufficient for even daylight right?

Alex, honestly, if u have the money to spare, go canon flash. the eTTL is more accurate then nissin/YN ttl. or there is another 3rd party with eTTL is the METZ (slightly more expensive 3rd party, but cheaper then canon ori).

i think u have a question in mind that need answer;
when u use M mode on body, the flash TTL still Will Work. meaning it will still find the compensate power level to fire. so u can set M for consistent ambiance light, and let the flash(ttl) find the right amount of light to lit ur subject.

but if u set flash to manual, u at least need some experience and guts to use it. because, there might be chance it will go under or over which requires a LOT of work of Post processing, might get a proper AUTO TTL and reduce the post processing.

There would still be shadows because there's only one light source, He should've used a white reflector to bounce back some light to eliminate the shadows instead.

However though D-I-Y softboxes will never be produce that softness as the real ones, unless you're a master at making these otherwise just spend on a real one, a 24x24 inch is only like, RM160?

Anyway, buns anyone?

Hi guys

It's been a while since I touched my D40, and I feel like picking up photography habit again.

With the recent announcement of the SB700, I'm thinking of getting this flash (maybe SB600), I wonder if it would cost less than RM1k, and hope that it will be released by mid-October.

Does the guide number difference between the SB600 and SB700 really affects image quality, as I assume that at a distance of more than 15m, the flash output wouldn't be too effective after all. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thank you.

Ur talking about the GN (guide number) rite?
Yes it does affects image quality (but if the picture is already bad in compo, exposure, etc then it won't do much wonder then) because higher GN means stronger output power (ie using 1/1 power on the flash)

About the 15m, where did u get the number? Hehe some flash don't even reach 5meter light-effective hahaha

i wouldn't say image quality but rather the quality of the photo itself BUT only at the point where more light is helpful.

after all, flash quite often don't reach 1/1 (full power). i prefer not to reach 1/1 power. biggrin.gif

this is Very Subjective. because it will be affected by shutterspeed, aperture, and iso.

D40 has good iso till 800, and assuming standard 5.6 lens. shutter of 1/60(which wont affect flash power yet)... it may reach 15m (example, any given flash)
D7000 has good iso till 3200, and who know u using F2.8 lens, shutter of 1/60.... the flash may reach up to 25m because given sensitivity and light absorb rate has increased.

why not? if given 580ex2 has GN58 (in meter) means at iso100, F1, 105mm zoom, it reaches 58meter.

let say a 550D has iso3200, F5.6, the flash CAN reach 58meter. 15 meter is nothing.

(apply same way if u are Alpha user, with A550 +F58)

or even F20 (sonyflash) can reach 20 meter with iso3200, F5.6

Eh I tot its in feet not meter..by bad then..
As what I was saying, I mean people rarely use flash longer than they usually use..
Me myself rarely (if the flash is mounted on d camera body) shoot subject that's 5meter away from me..
A different story if doing off camera flash..

feet la. cannot be meter.

you know 58 meter how far la, and we'll be like carrying a mini-lighthouse already for that.

nikon are in feet (read my reply to Goldfries.

yea, noone shoot taht far, but the power of the flash is need when u do bounce wink.gif sometimes, GN40~ (like 420, F42 and SB600) are not enough to bounce a 2 industrial story ceiling... or huge ballroom. or fighting against daylight/backlight photo, u do need that 'power' but not the range.

the GN is a way to show how far the power can do, not a comparison of distance... but power tongue.gif a lot ppl misunderstood the need of GN58m. wink.gif

Goldfries: nikon GN is in Feet smile.gif Canon and Sony uses Meter GN.

SB900 has 132GN. (it canot be 132 meter so that is in Feet.) so its possible that GN58m...

but the Gn feet to M cant be converted directly, because the 132GN is at 35mm iso100. some trial and test show that SB900 fire till 57meter, on 200mm iso100

in other words, the F58 and 580ex2 is more powerful then SB900 (people got mislead that sb900 is more powerful or further in range because of the 200mm zoom)

(the mm refer to flash zoom, not lens zoom. and all GN is sensor sensitivity upon using F1 lens)

Added on September 28, 2010, 6:32 pmbut our flash is a 50+ watt strobe, we cant compare to a 100watt or 200watt studio strobe... those, if set properly, with proper zoom design head, it can reach pass 100meter GN easily

it could be, i dont know exact value of 866 GN, but most figure i saw online is GN60 (m)... but then, those several meter makes no diff, because the distance drop drastically at iso100, F5.6 (that is 5 stop) meaning, from 1/1 drop to 1/32

I get it, thanks for the info. This means that a powerful flash will benefit most when using bounce flash on high ceilings. SB900 is probably off my budget for now.

When bounce flash is performed, is there any "distance sensor" in the flash in order to increase flash power to reach the ceiling? Would it be better for the picture if Manual settings is used in that case?

Ahhh.. I want SB700 to be released ASAP...

the "distance sensor" in this case would be TTL
it will fire a pre-flash and the camera will judge how much light is required just before it fires the main flash.
the pre-flash is too close to main flash for our eyes to detect it

well, its not distance sensor, but just a TTL sensor with Lens-distance information being calculate intensely(well noone knows the real formula LOL) which they market as i-TTL (nikon) or (e-TTL(II) for canon and ADI for sony)

3rd party flash does not have the intensive formula to retrieve distance as key to accurate exposure (hence why we always encourage people to get original brand flash), but Metz flash (more expensive then Nissin) has license for i/e TTL and ADI.

the TTL(pre-flash) will calculate how much light is needed to brighten up the photo, but another thing u have to know is, the TTL relies on the Metering Mode u choose. if u picked spot, the TTL will only fire as much to balance the Ev on the spot only, ignoring all other space(frame). if u pick Multi/wide/(other word mean whole frame) metering, the flash might fire stronger to fill the room with light, that might cause ur subject to be a little brighter then usual.

understand the whole basic of ur camera from PASM to Metering EV(aperture, shutter and ISO - the exposure triangle) then only learn flash.... or u can just use AUTO all the way tongue.gif

1. Di622
2. YN560
3. YN460II

either 1 of these.. which is the best 1? or is it that they own have specialties? I mainly use it for wedding photography and low light hall.

ever consider Metz? http://shashinki.com/shop/metz-shoe-mount-...facturers_id=94

its less power then the model u mention, slightly more expensive, but it has better "e-ttl" accuracy. those model u mention only has TTL which is not consistent. if u wan to go serious with wedding and event shooting, i really advise metz or canon flash, because if u buy those, u will struggle to get right photo then 2-3 month later u surely wan to upgrade to canon flash ohhh...

or Metz more powerful model, http://shashinki.com/shop/metz-shoe-mount-...facturers_id=94 in my opinion, this flash is better then 580exII, for the frontfill is very useful(there is another 2nd flash below the main head)

Wanna ask for opinion,
which Demb flash diffuser more suitable to shoot vertical ar?

I had trouble when shooting in vertical. Seems that the left frame slight overexposed, while the right frame underexposed. sad.gif

Anyone can share their advices or experiences?

Offical website seems to be cheaper than those at GS. hmm.gif

hi all, wanna ask some question about sb600...It seems under fires sometimes. Sometimes, I get an obviously very under-exposed image and in the top right hand side of the flash gun's screen I get a sign that tells me minus one point something, minus two point something and, ultimately, minus three.

TTL is a sophisticated math done by the camera body with Lens attach.

there is, way to inject new variable (settings) into the sophisticated formula for TTL to mess up the whole lighting if u dont know what u are doing.

+1 to that, goldy..
Hahaha I spent 60% of the time telling the VAL (voice activated lightstand) on duty to change the power manually..
But when using Nikon's CLS, it's easier..
Now waiting for Canon's system to test (haven't got the chance to minggle with 7d yet)

TS misses a very nice third party flash which is the Metz mecablitz 76 MZ-5

Its very nice honestly. At first was wondering of Nikon SB900 and found out that just a little bit of money can get this Metz. So Its nice and cool. The multi adapter makes it useful to switch between cameras.

Hi to all, i want to know whether a third party flash fix to my canon 550D, can the shutter speed still adjustable to more than 1/200s or just like built in flash which maximum can go up to 1/200s only? some told me is need to look for those flashgun with ETTL then can simply adjust shutter speed on ur camera to maximum like 1/4000s. Please advise me as im going to have my 1st flash gun.

You need flash with high speed sync abilities.
High Speed Sync is basically multiple flashes at a high rate.

Most third parties flash do not have high speed sync capabilities.

may i know which would be a good match for my canon EOS 550D, sunpak PZ42x or Nissin Di622?
in terms of compatibility and performance that is..

how about when compared to the original canon speedlite 430EX?

i'm planning to buy and to start using flash.. but dont have the budget to go for the orignal canon speedlite.. so considering third party such as those mentioned above..

can anyone give ur comments.. thanks!! icon_question.gif

I'm using 500D with Nissin Di622 currently. It's a good and budget combo for entry level. Once you master more skills, you can upgrade further to 580EX2 or better. The sound when recharge is a bit annoying...like a laser gun.

don't think so, batteries are batteries regardless of the brand. But if you got China imitation, i cannot guarantee it won't explode

cannot compare la. Di622 / PZ42X is half the price of 430EX II but similar guide number.

the 430EX II's quality is top notched. biggrin.gif the Di622 advantage is on the price and can be optically triggered.

that said, if $$$$ is a concern - just get those 3rd party flash and be happy with it. they're good enough for most people.

@Orca: As far as I know, none (cos you're on canon). Best you can do is optical trigger built-in on the Di622, but that only works if your main flash is on TTL (M mode flash doesn't trigger it).

IIRC d90 support up to 1/250s when flash attached..
if ur fren can go further than that, means YES FP is supported in his speedlight

easiest thing to do is learn to diffuse the light.
easiest way is by bouncing off the ceiling

next step...drag the shutter or up the ISO

Im using this set up, it work great and it doesnt need battery, it have full ttl support and you can set up for as long as you want
its quite cheap, less than 90 for total setup

otherwise buy flash with optical trigger and trigger it using built in flash

otherwise, surf around garage sales, cohab is selling wireless trigger and all my experience dealing with her have been positive smile.gif

Some of the more successful cross lighted pics. All pics were lit with one ungelled strobe.

Yup. £12 for the item inclusive of shipping though you may want to add extra for tracking. I got lucky as the item didn't get lost in transit. smile.gif
I got it from this seller But it seems like the listing has ended. But this is still running.

The strobist collection is good but some gels are missing such as 1/8 CTO or 1/2 plusgreen. I wanted to get the Rosco Swatchbook but the only place that sells them and ships internationally is Adorama or B&H. Anyone willing to organise a bulk to get it?

Did you get the 55 pieces one?

I can organize a bulk for that, but it'll cost RM120 per box (each box 55 pieces) for personal shipping from US. That's the best deal I can find currently.

what for you need 55 pieces?

just 1 piece orange translucent piece you can adjust for so many different orange intensity already. in fact that's the one you'll use the most for indoor.

You mean the strobist kit?
Actually its not 55 different gels.
It just that there are several copies of those that are commonly used.
Comes in handy if you have several strobes.

yes but i'm saying la, generally when you shoot indoors with ambient light, a single piece of CTO can do a lot already.

Added on January 9, 2011, 1:43 amand yes, like what you mentioned, some are because of multiple copies.

i think the 55 colors are useful for achieving various effect, like say you want key or highlights in a different color.

and sorry, earlier i was talking in context of say shooting a wedding or function in a typical warmly lit setting.

True but you can't just buy a single CTO or at least not from my experience and those gels are pretty difficult to get hold of. smile.gif

Maybe you can learn how to fill-flash 1st? I think this is the most easiest way to learn flash photography for newbies.

Then after that, you can learn bounce flash.

The number of shots you can take depends on your flash power that you used.
If you use your flash at full power for all your shots, of course the number of shots will not be as much as if you are using it at lesser power.

So, for all those people asking about the number of shots for a particular brand of battery: it all depends on the situation.

Why not just test them out? biggrin.gif

Yeah, given 2 scenario for example this guy uses flash at f/5.6 ISO200 1/100s where else another guy shoots at the same venue but using f/2.8, ISO800 and 1/60s perhaps. Different power will be used from the flash.

Hi guys,

Need to ask some questions about flash gun again

1st - Had my 1st photo session with flash 580ex ii just now. Noticed after some time the flash took longer time to recharge before the flash is ready to use again. The red pilot light turns red after a long time. Is this normal?
2nd - My flash was out of batt when others still shooting with flash. (note: used continuos 2 shoots and +1. Also the batt was fully charged 1 week ago and left unused until today). Could this be the reasons why my flash is out when they are still shooting?

Appreciate your input as I'm Newbie. Thanks.

1) as batteries get weaker the flash recharge takes longer.
2) probably not. rechargeables don't lose that much charge over just one week. possibly your flash is firing harder than others. quick simplified example, if you are using f/5.6 lens and someone else is using f/2.8, then every time your flash fires it has to fire 4 times harder (or is it 3 times? haha) cos of the 2-stop difference.

^ Actually some NiMH batteries don't slow down a lot when finishing, example is Eneloop. Only like the last 10 shots it slows down. No warning one :S. Can suddenly die off during shooting lol. Kena once :S.

*
Ok. Now I understand why the recharging time getting longer after a while. Also, a very valid point there. I was using f4.0 or above just now. My only zoom lens and thats the widest it can go. Maybe that's the reason why it didn't last long compared to others. Thanks a lot!

If not mistaken, the 580EXII slows down the recharge rate as it start to build up heat.

Any flash will heat up if you keep shooting continuously and depends on how much power used per shot and how fast you shoot.

Alright. Guess better to reduce usage of continuos shooting. Sigh. I left the place because flash was out early when other still standing high and shooting..

Another question.. As I was zooming in and shoot, the subject seems just nice with the flash setting but when I zoom out and shoot, the subject tend to over exposed, is this normal too? How can I overcome this?

hi just to share my exp - phottix has a few range. for budget can get phottix tetra, i have a few, they are ok but lack on the range and compatibility so just it it for close proximity or studio is fine. dedicated transmitter and receiver. if in large venue for e..g event sometimes it doesn't trigger if a bit far.

I've switched to using a few phottix Atlas which is pocket wizard compatible. the range is far greater. Atlas is transceiver (same unit for xmit or xceive)
http://www.lightingrumours.com/phottix-atl...zard-review-299

you an even use it as a wireless remote trigger. highly recommend it for serious strobist.

cost Tetra = rm 99 or so for one set (transmitter n receiver)
cost Atlas = about rm 350 for one unit
cost Pocket Wizard = about rm 9xx or so for one unit

Thanks bro for the info. Btw I was looking at some phottix atlas just now in the garage sales. Looks kinda good. Just to be sure, if I wanted to use it as off camera flash, I need to buy 2 units right? Hopefully camera shops here sells them. I'm just a hobbyist so I may not do some serious strobist I think. Might wanna get the 430 to be my slave as well.

So say if I wanna use 3 flashes at the same time, would I nid 3 phottix unit? Is that so? Or the 430 can just be a slave to the 580? So I oni nid 2. Is it like that?

Anyways, thanks for ur replies. Really helpful

yes you need 2 units. one to put on your camera hotshoe and one to plug/attach your flash/strobe.

if you have 3 flashes you need 4 atlas (1 on the body to act as trigger). well you can set the 430 to slave mode and have the 580 trigger it but have to be line of sight or at least where the sensor can detect the flash, but admittedly this is my theory as i don't use this method. it should work though. if you attach the atlas then even behind a wall it will trigger.

to use the atlas as a remote shutter button you need to buy a seperate cable. it can simultaneously release shutter as well as trigger flashes. you can buy from the guy in garage sales (camera2u) his name is daniel i bought 10 from him so far.

do remember to turn off the atlas when not in use else the battery will drain. uses 2 AA batt included.

p.s. it can trigger SB and Nissin too wink.gif (and other models)

hi guys,i read through whole thread,could not find comparison between sb600 & sb700 & sb900.

I want to buy a flash gun,maybe sb900 or sb700.but budget reason,i could not reach sb900.so thinking sb700.
after read some website and some comparison, few aspect i would like to know and that concern me is the GN and flash zoom of sb700 is lower than sb900.In term of flash power, sb900 is of course stronger than sb700.

If comparing sb600 and sb700,
sb600 is cheaper than sb700 ,sb600 spec states tat sb600 GN is higher than sb700 but does that really the matter?how about the flash power of sb600 and sb700

If you have any experience or advice on these 3 flashgun, please voice your opinion.thanks
