Good to find a thread like this biggrin.gif although there's a separate thread on strobist, this one is more general.

anyway, i got a few CLS shots, need some C&C. just started trying, so still beginner on how to setup, position the flash and everything.

Are these 3 pictures taken using boucned flash ?
*
they're taken using Nikon's CLS, using D80 built-in flash as commander mode, controlling 1 SB-600 fired from the ground level towards the subject and 1 Nissin di466 with lambency from the top, like a giant spotlight biggrin.gif

I see, cool...  biggrin.gif

Since there's a thread about flash, don't mind if I ask something.  biggrin.gif
Can I place my external flash just beside the camera if I wanna use slave mode ?
*
you wanna fire your flash wirelessly? you'll need a D80/90 at least cause it has commander mode. or else, you have to get a 3rd party wireless flash trigger.

Picture 2 looks too white for me. But 1 and 3 is awesome! yea, many china trigger can do it too.
*
thanks, lol i thought the 1st one is too bright/white, especially at the bottom part of the plate cause the flash is directed there.

1st your composition needs working

2nd shooting food, you can point the flash to the behind the food, towards the sides perhaps. let it bounce to create highlights.

studio shoot food and restaurant shoot food uses same concept but at restaurant is a lot more challenging, i don't use flash........... even till today. cos flash annoy the crap out of people in restaurant, and draw too much attention. biggrin.gif

you Sony user, so you would be aware how bright can the F42 light the area at full power. biggrin.gif

same goes to Nikon SB600 and Canon 430EX II.
*
those were taken at home, so nobody to annoy don't worry hehehe.

point the flash towards the sides? as in point it away from the food ah?

i use natural and man-made lights. biggrin.gif

should've come to my talk that day, i covered a bit.

i know i will get annoyed if a bunch of people firing their flash away in restaurant, get more flash bang than playing COD : MW2. so since i don't like it, i don't do to others.

you know la if you order 3 dishes, easily you take at least 5 shots for the food. since use flash, 1st one to see the out come, the rest to tune.

tongue.gif
yes, point it away from the food.

this is a shot that's not PPed at all, other than resize and watermark.

I used 2 flash for this (actually 1 is enough la), just 1 on each side pointing upwards to white ceiling.

as you can the shot lacks highlights cos the lights come from the top.
*
ooh ok, will try pointing upwards/sideways then thanks biggrin.gif. can't do it in restaurant though, now i know why you don't use flash at restaurants.

Nice shot, lwliam! This is a good thread. if only we all can share out setups and pictures here, then we can help every1 to improve! Makes me so eager to try out more wireless flash after seeing some pics here!
Hey, di466 can use as a slave to nikon's commander mode? Any probs with it? I currently have one sb600, might wanna look into purchasing cheaper flashes around for more CLS...
*
yup, i read the manual and it says can use wirelessly, so i tried and it worked biggrin.gif still need more practice though.

Hrmm... This thread doesn't cater to the dissemination of information regarding built-in flash? I think the built-in unit should be fully utilised before moving on to the external unit. (Sry for the tone, juz finished with my scientific blog post :-P)

Anyway, I've made my own version of the built-in / pop-up flash bouncer, using an orange juice carton.

All f/5.6, 1/60, ISO800, 55mm, flash compensation +1

Before (control, no flash)

More information on my blog at http://365-knocks-n-bruises.blogspot.com (sorry yea, the procedure really too long).

Do give comments and suggestions though. I wanna exhaust this option before 'graduating' to an external unit.
*
nice diffuser dude, the light seems to be diffused pretty well but i think the built-in flash does not have enough power compared to external unit? cause can see that it's quite underexposed with your diffuser on.

hmm.. got a question, when would you use a softbox, V cards (strip light), or umbrella? they don't exactly produce the same result right? if anyone has the 3 above, care to share some outputs using them? biggrin.gif tq
