hey mike, congrat and good idea on flash thread.

btw, could you add "*discountinued" on the flash model which is discountinue, so it wont make some new comer trying to dig the market for model which is discoutinue, and put a footnote for discontinued model can only be found as 2nd hand.

btw, picture that is not excately shot by flash gun, or strobe light, but 'hot light' welcome or not? or just hotshoe flash allowed?

Dear sifus,

I have a Canon EOS 450D. Now contemplating to get a flash gun.

I was looking at Nissin DI622, bcos it's cheap. But one sifu told me it is not good enough and he's suggesting to get Canon 430EXII, which cost around RM1000+.  rclxub.gif
Then someone suggesting Nissin DI866.

I am so indecisive now on which one to get. My budget was to get the DI622, but if it's not good enough, no point of buying it cheap, right?

Can some sifus here help me please?  icon_question.gif  Thank you! notworthy.gif

Cheers,
Ash

Di866 is a powerful flash (as in the distance it can lit up) but quote from a friend(nikon) who uses it "inconsistance" so u have to learn to use to use it in manual mode (troublesome)

there is a reason why people who used origin brand flash would recommend u to get the origins one. because they are just too reliable.

430EXII is good enough if u shoot casually, family and friends. unless u going for events(school/college/public) or wedding, its better to get the top model 580EXII.

strobist is anything to do with 'recreate light' onto ur photo. even bounce flash mount on ur camera is consider strobist, just the most boring strobe method tongue.gif

TTL is basically means auto smile.gif it does a pre-flash to detect the power required to balance the ev on the photo.

14mm is wide. and 200mm is snoot. if u shoot with a 18mm lens, and snoot the flash at 200mm... go try it, and learn the result wink.gif

already tried it, gnna post the pic later. i see, so that's the flash zoom at 200mm and lens 18mm, like vignette effect lol.  thumbup.gif
*
yup yup~~ like vigneting,... so now u know how the 200mm zoom flash will show up in the picture of wide angle, that is how the flash will travel also when u set the flash zoom to auto, it will follow the length/shape of ur zoom lens. if u zoom to 200mm to shoot, the flash will zoom too so it wont waste its flash power to lit the corner, but focus in the middle wink.gif

boyzone, most ring flash are tend for macro, if for portraiture, it depends, if u have bad iso body with F5.6 lens, u have to get pretty close for the ringflash to be effective. but if u have a great iso1600+F2.8 lens, i guess u can shoot as far as 3 meter away

magiclover, sorry dont think it can be done, so far,... only 7D can trigger 580exII with pop up.

but i heard the 1D series can trigger other 580 flashes with an 580 attached as commander mode. not sure with 5D

hold the 'zoom' button for 3-5 sec and u will see the 'Wireless flash menu' try figure it out, smile.gif i still figuring how to trigger other 580 with a 580 mount on 450D... lol

this thread is quite lively i have to say.
i want to ask which flash trigger would y'all recommend?
i can't trigger my 430EX II when it's off the camera la. cry.gif  cry.gif
and which battery y'all use for your flash?
is 2000mah enuf for casual use?
*
if u have money, grab a new 580exII

else, all other third party trigger is fine, phottix are good smile.gif

2000mAh last me about 600 shots with max of 400iso used. (if ur camera can go iso800, the power is half, means u can easily shoot till 1000 shots)

Michaelbyz23: shoot through have tendency to bounce back, with small room, it will bounce back and bounce around the ceiling etc, ur whole photo will bright up, u cant do shots like 'dramatic shadow'

u can control ur background light by increase shutter speed, or aperture to control amount of light (flash) to get into the sensor.

yes, umbrella can do directional lighting, by using bouncing (not shoot through) and at a certain angle, or say, u have to understand how light 'leaks' and goes. like abang goldfries said, u have to understand the umbrella itself.

for example:
