I was offered a job in Sg but not sure whether to accept or not? The job's a downgrade from my current one in m'sia but the pay is better (no conversion). They offered SGD 4+++ but i duno if that is enough to go about in Sg especially rent is on the high side. Any advise? The Sg com is a american company in Jurong dealing with heavy equipment.

Pretty sure that it is enough for you to survive in SG unless that you are those wearing branded stuff all over your body.
Besides, do you mind to share that how many years experience do you have and
what position is it? SGD4+++ drool.gif

Since u've mentioned it's an increment, i think would be sufficient.
i.e. if you can survive with RM3+++ in Malaysia, u shd be able to survive with SGD4+++ in Singapore.

I don't see how it is a downgrade if they pay you more in absolute terms. Maybe your current job in Malaysia isn't that high a grade after all.

If you are Paris Hilton, S$4K is definitely not enough. If you're a Bangla, S$4K is enough for the whole year, lodging AND food. How would we know whether S$4K is enough for you, if we don't know who you are and how you like to spend money?

A fresh graduate's salary is S$2K or so. Use that as your benchmark whether you're getting enough.

Good day folks,

I am trying to estimate the cost of living for a typical Malaysian in Singapore.

I have factored in all the expenses that I think might incur. Kindly comment if the calculation is accurate.

Ps. I am looking for a comfortable lifestyle - nothing luxurious, just comfortable.

Meals

SGD 6 x 3 (breakfast, lunch, dinner) x 7 (days per week) x 4 (weeks per month) = SGD 504 per month

Lodging

SGD 600 per month

Entertainment

SGD 100 (per week) x 4 (weeks per month) = SGD 400 per month

Traveling expenses

SGD 200 per month

Cost of living i.e. laundry, toiletries etc

SGD 100 per month

Travel back to KL once a month + Expenses in KL

SGD 200 (to and fro) + SGD 100 (equivalent to RM 200 or so)

Mom's allowance + Utility bills at home

SGD 200 per month

The sum of the above is approximately SGD 2304.

My style of living in SG

Food $3 a meal x 3 = $10 a day x 30 = $300 (haven include when i am not working, house owner will cook my food, so basicly is 20 days only)
rental = $400
transportation = $60 ($2.40 x 22) its less than $60 but incase i wan go aunty house so spare a bit more.
mobile bill = $80 (signed too expensive plan already, will reduce to $30 when contract ends)
entertainment = $0 (no nid, stay at home play dota/on9 game, no nid money , u can also download movies and watch movies and drama at home since SG internet connection is freaking fast.)
laundry and toiletries = $50 can use for 6 months = $9 a month?

so its $300+$400+$60+$80 = $840.

ur calculation is wayyy too comfortable.
i am trying to reduce my meal to $5 a day, skip breakfast and eat economical rice (2vege+1meat = $2.5)
going back to KL every month? why wanna waste those money? just go back once every 3 months is good enough. so even with $1.5k, u can still survive in SG. if u want comfort, can add another $10 to ur meal allowance and u can go for fine dining once a week.

The sum of the above is approximately SGD 2304.

A few things:

- You've estimated meals for 28 days a month. That's about 2-3 days less than a calendar month. But should be okay as you are also returning to KL once a month. S$500 a month is okay. I usually spend about S$20-30 a day on makan on average. About 5-10 for chap fan->Subway and 20-50 for a nice meal a few times a week.

- You don't need S$200 for a return ticket to KL. It only costs RM250 to fly to Subang return using Firefly. So around S$150 for the flight plus taxi to and from Changi.

- S$200 traveling expenses is very high for 100% public transport, but ok if you're going to take taxi a few times a week. For me, I spend about S$500-600 on taxis per month if I avoid public transport that month.

- S$500 per month for entertainment and toiletries/utilities is high, from my perspective. But since I don't drink, smoke, gamble or club... (using my own money, that is) my perspective might be skewed.

- Mom's allowance and utility bills is a non-determinant or non-incremental item ie. it makes no difference whether you're in Singapore or KL. So if you're using this estimate to weigh a SG vs KL decision, then it should be taken out. If you're simply doing budgeting or calculating savings, then include.

- Same as above for expenses in KL.

It's a family thing, no? I fly back to Ipoh every 2 weeks.

I think most of us survive on:

$10/day on meals ($300/mth: economy rice everyday)
$600 on accommodation (1 person/room)
$10 on entertainment (1 movie/mth)
$60 on commuting (depends on how far you stay from office, bus/MRT only)
$40 on handphone bills
$100 if travel back to KL once a month (bus)
$200 for mom

Total: $1310
Assuming you make 2.5k/mth (average start for fresh degree holder), you still save a respectable $1190.

haha, too bad, u can't find another 1 like her coz he is my best friend's aunty. keke. but she is selling her house and moving to another house soon. she say this house feng shui no good. but she also reserve a room for me if i wanted to move with them biggrin.gif . but she is good also la, she know i work near Yio Chu Kang, so she say she won't look for anything further than woodlands. but she is interested to move to Yishun instead. so its actually nearer for me. thumbup.gif

PS: i am staying 1 person in a common room. not those store room type. her old house air-cond spoilt, if not add another $50 i can get air-cond also.
