lol i spend about 120-140 a week. the vet recommended mixing alpo with eukanuba. i have 2 golden retrievers who needs to be fed 2 times a day leh...
*
Wow, that's a lot you're feeding them. Means about 1 big bag of Alpo per week?

Let's see, adult Golden Retriever is about 29-34kg in weight. I think they need about 350-450g of dry food per day each (assuming adult size). So that means 700-900g daily for both dogs, or about 21-27kg per month. If you buy the big bag Alpo at 20kg, then it's only like 1.25 bags per month.

Are you sure you're not overfeeding your goldens?

good advice.  rclxms.gif
with rm140 a week, you probably could buy 800g to 1.2kg of raw chick per dog per day. It's there abouts... Just curious to how much you are feeding your dog daily. RM70 per dog per week means you are feeding them about 30kg of kibbles per dog a week? That's about 4kg a day. Are you over feeding your dogs? or did you include misc into your costs (i.e. treats and all)
*
yea including treats and also other stuff like raw chicken etc... for Alpo, i just buy the 20kg bag once every 2 weeks, and somehow i must say they're heavy eaters. They eat 2 times a day (600g+ a day, 3:1 ratio of Alpo:Eukanuba)

not overfeeding. they have good appetite and are good companions too. about 600g x 2 x 2 each day. My golden retrievers weight 36kg and 38kg respectively. it's the vet's recommendation la. smile.gif

Golden retrievers are indeed good companions.

That means you're feeding each dog about 1200g per day! Seems very high. Most of the recommendations from the manufacturers is far less. For example:

I'm on Prey model. Read Barf Thread to learn more.
It's a healthier, cheaper and more natural approach ) for dogs and cats).

Daily meal is just 2-3% of their weight. If over than this percentage meaning you're over feeding.

I think 2 - 3% is just a guide. if your dog is a healthy and active dog, then 3% may not be enough. it all depends on each individual dog. you have to feel for their bones (literally) and look at their shape. If they are always hungry, it still does mean you are under feeding them. What i'd do is that i would increase their portion till they are full and am unable to finish it. decrease the amount only if you think they are overeating based on their size. There is an obesity chart for dogs i think. You can see how their shape determines if they are over weight or under weight.

mine just right. coz no bony or too meaty feel.
2-3% is guide..coz i dont have scale. i just use my eyes and hands to estimate the meat. haha ^^.
So far so good.

The brand you feed all also very low quality. Filled with grains, fillers, and quality of ingredients are also questionable. If your budget tight try something like proseries holistic or nutriedge. If you don't mind the price and would do anything for your dogs health then innova, go! natural, now! grain free, vets choice health  extension, canine caviar are all quite good brands.

thanks for the feedback, think gotta stretch my budget for my poor golden..i feed blackwood since her a puppy, no problem until a year back...look like blackwood quality is getting worst....

Innova for 2.7KG cost around RM55-RM60. You may get it at Petshop but not hypermarket.

Best price I've found so far for Innova is Sea Park Pet Supplies in SS2. Since you have a golden buying the big pack would make most sense. Slightly under RM210 after discount IIRC (10% off if you ask). When my 2 boys (med size mutt of some sort of hound mix / labrador) went through 2 big bags of the chicken and turkey grain free variety they had good muscle tone and good poop, but I found my lab started getting tartar on the back of his teeth (his chompers were pristine for 2 years prior to this). Your mileage may vary smile.gif

You can also find Innova at most Petsmore and Pet Lovers Centre outlets if location convenience is a factor (personally I try to buy from pet stores that don't sell livestock for ethical reasons).

I actually meant their EVO range sorry (Innova contains grain, EVO is grain-free, both made by Natura). 13kg bag for RM210-238 depending where you buy. If it's the Innova range should be cheaper due to lower meat content.

I find with high meat/protein content food I feed significantly less, my 28-30kg lab eats half the amount my friend's similarly sized dog consumes on Pro Plan. No issues feeding high protein that some people get worried about without actually trying it on their (healthy) dogs or reading studies debunking the high protein = bad myth first, my 2 dogs on 30%+ protein diets have perfect blood work (again, your mileage may vary). If your dog has kidney issues then avoid high protein foods.

you should've ask for evo not innova.

dont think any malaysia pet shops bring in innova.

im feeding both my beagle and german shepherd evo.

i normally now buy the Turkey & Chicken Formula (big bites) 13KG bag every month for RM212.

i started on evo since day one for my beagle and then for my german shepherd, and im really happy to say that this food is by far the best dog food out there in the market along with other 6 stars dog food.

@ byaku-chan

whats the brand of vitamins you give your dog ?

the vitamins im giving two both my pups is call nutri-plus multivitamin gel by Virbac. ( http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/pets-accessories/v...el/1434668/#rev )

i think this vitamin is fairly ok to me since it says that its good for young rapidly growing dogs and other purpose too.

i now plan to change the vitamin to a diffrent brand and focus more on bones.

any suggestions on what brand of vitamins to go for for strong bones ?

thanks.

Which shop do you get your EVO from?

I think other 6-star dog food that is available locally are Orijen, Instinct and Taste of the Wild. Haven't tried them yet but am curious if they are really that good and worth the price?

my dad usually buys it at pudu since its close to his office.

the name of the shop is lee pet supply.

best price i can get evo 13kg bag after discount is RM212.

the original price for evo 13kg bag without discount is RM230 or so.

i would love to give a try for other 6 star dog food but evo has never let me down.

the good thing is my dog's poo is solid and doesnt stink. not just that, the ingridents in evo are good too.

so i can say that its worth every penny ive been paying.

not a lot of people out there can afford this brand or be it other 6 star dog food.

but if you can afford and like to give it a try, i hope it wont let you and your dog down and continue feeding it with 6 star food.

it best you survey or try diffrent brand of dog food and see which one suits your dog best because not all dogs got the same digestive system and every other little things that goes on in the stomach and back out.

Thanks for the info.

I suppose all the 6-star dog food pricing is similar. I got quoted Orijen 13.5kg for RM240.

Or if you wish to try something new. try going raw.
A small breed won't cost much per month.
